View Full Version : NYC June-July meet -- interest check

We were talking about having the next meet in early summer. When and where do you want to meet?
The preliminary proposal is for a meet during the weekend of August 6-7, 13-14, or 20-21.
For those who can't wait, and need shaving gear soon, a June 25 mini meet is proposed at The Holy Trinity at 1pm.

A Micro Brewery!
The Wicked Wolf in Hoboken, overlooking the scenic Hudson River and NY Skyline?
Heartland Brewery, near Pasteur's?

Why must it be either or? Why can't it be And/Both? I'm hearing the call of Pasteur's beckoning us... maybe we can even put on a shave seminary in Central Park? :001_smile:w00t:

I'd much rather have two meetups than one- but I actually NEED to go to Pasteur's soon as I'm running out of my favorite soap.

Maybe a mini meet at the end of June and a large meet in August? June's not a great month for a serious meet because of school, transitions, vacations, etc.
I guess what that means is the June meet is more impromptu... as in June 25 at The Holy Trinity at 1pm.

I am good with late July or early August. We would need to nail down a date soon so I can get airfare booked and get out there. I would fly in on a Friday and fly home on a Sunday. That means I would want to spend all day Saturday and Saturday night in the city. Two things I would like to see if feasible are the Statue of Liberty and Ground zero. And of course Pasteur's. Who wants to spear head this and knock a date down this up coming week?
SiBurning

I propose August 13th - 14th. If not, then we can try some other weekend in August.
The 20th is too close to early school preparations. The 6th can be a backup date.

I am good with that. Once enough others chime in that they can make it, we can make it a go and I will book my flight. Sometimes frequent flyer miles are a good thing.

So Scott you're really planning to come to NYC then?
The 13th-14th of August sounds good for me, I'll keep the date free. Anyone interested in a quick/incredibly expensive trip to Pasteur's in the next couple of Saturdays (or the 25th?)

I changed the first post. It's not right to pick a single date up front for an interest check. The idea is to figure out early on how to accommodate the most people.
If you can make some but not all of the August weekend, say so. Then we can finalize a date, hopefully within a week or two.

I am pretty sure the 13th - 14th works well for me. Count me in.
Scott, which airport are you flying into? LaGuardia may be the most inexpensive as far as air fares go, but it is the first to be affected by weather, and getting into Manhattan from there is not easy with Mass Transit.
Newark Liberty does have rail service to Midtown NY (Penn Station) and Hoboken. On the Hoboken Waterfront is a brand spanking new Westin Hotel. I have no idea what the rates are, but you may get a better deal than a place in Midtown.

Actually I will fly free into Newark. Brian and the train will then be my transportation. I will use free nights probably at a Hampton around the airport. I will work out all details when the dates finalize.

Where's the Holy Trinity? I'm guessing Pasteur and Cambridge Chemists make up two points but what would be the third? The other Pasteur?
Any interest in heading slightly farther afield for the post-Pasteur beverage-and-swag-meet? Old Town Tavern has a singularly appropriate vibe. Or, I suppose, martinis at the Roosevelt.
Just stirring the pot, seeing as I'm always interested, seldom available, and never missed.

The last time we went it was closed on Saturday: I called last week and they're closed Sunday's again. M-Th 8am-7pm, Fri 8am-6pm, summer Saturday hours 10-4pm- This is the downtown location. Not sure if the uptown location has different hours. I now have their number saved...
So is the mini-meet still a go? I kinda have to go to Pasteur's regardless, but I'd rather go with people who will push me to buy irresponsibly

The meet's a good chance to get to know people better, and pick up twice as much gear as you want. If you think the board encourages you to buy too much, you should be very afraid of meeting the members in person.

Scott, just a few friendly tips.
It's 6th Avenue, not "Avenue Of The Americas".
The "cute" furry animals scurrying on the subway tracks are not "Long Tailed Urban Squirrels" - we call them rats.
Wish I could make it but I'll be out of town. Summer in NYC requires, if at all possible, weekends out of NYC.
Have a great time!

Here's another fun one- if you see a street called Houston, it's actually pronounced "how-ston". People who weren't born here (me!) still don't know why they did this.

Guess where I was today?? Cambridge Chemist. Took the day off and the wife and I went to the city to celebrate my 15th anniversary in the USA. Had a great lunch at Candle Cafe (3rd, between 74 and 75th) then walked past St Vincent Ferrer to Cambridge. Got home with a Floris Elite Soap in a bowl, a puck C&S 88, a bottle of C&S Cuba and a bottle of Atkinson English Lavender - well worth the trip. Scott is also a great guy to talk with. Too bad he is not there on Saturdays. BTW, he told us they will be closed Saturdays in August!!!!

I took my wife there, she is a vegan for some time now. The food was outstanding, if one didn't know its vegan, you really had a hard time to realize it. Next time I try a beer, they had two German beers and a wine, too.

I can't freakin wait for August. The only problem is I live in the midwest, you guys are going to think I talk funny.
I would hereby like to extend an invitation to all my metrosexual metropolitan wet-shaving brethren, especially those of you who are musicians. I perform (on drums) with an ensemble called the Radioflyer Blues Band. (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001954144199) We play every Weds. night on the Upper East side at a place called American Trash, (http://www.nycamericantrash.com/) which is on 1st Ave. between 76th/77th. The gig runs from approx. 9pm-1am. There is no cover charge.
The thing that's great about this gig is that it's an open jam. So after we play our initial opening set, the floor opens up to other musicians. Lots of folks come down -- guitarists, bass players, drummers, singers, keyboard players...we even had an incredible flute player sit in a couple of weeks ago! The guys in the band are all excellent players & really low-key, so no pressure. It's not like you have to be an amazing musician to sit in.
Anyway, I thought it could possibly be a fun hang. The bar also serves food so you can dilute your beer if you choose. :001_tongu Live music, beer, food...and all within walking distance of the Shaving TriangleŽ. What more could one ask for? :thumbup1:

Oh, don't worry, we're not going to think such a thing!
Let me give you some pronunciation guides:
Kaw-Fi - A warm caffeinated beverage popular with many New Yorkers. Old Timers still yearn for Chock Full O' Nuts.
Lawn Guy Land - The region East of Queens and Brooklyn, not served by NYC subway, with residential homes all with perfectly manicured lawns, hence then name.

tree - youse know one, two, tree
Fugetaboutit... Pretty much replaces everything except yes. But can also be an exclamation of assent in times of great excitement or surprise.
