Well, I've done two previous blade comparisons, and this past week I did my third. This time I tried two blades that you don't hear too much about, but when you do it's usually good. I tried a Russian made Perma-Sharp Super against a German Timor blade. As usual in my tests, I'm first looking for the closest and smoothest shave, not the most long lasting blade. So I again used each blade just twice.
The results? These are two super blades! Loved both of them. At $20 per hundred the Perma-sharp rank right up there with other high value blades. Some people have identified them as their "Iridium replacement", and others as one of their favorites. To me it compared favorably to the Astra SP and the Voshkod which tied in my last blade slugfest. Seems like a very sharp blade, but also very smooth. Great combination, and at a great price point. Don't know why these aren't more popular - except the only place I know of to get them is a Turkish dealer. Plus there might be some bad comments out there from the ones that are not made at St. Pete. Be sure to get the Russian made ones and I think you'll be happy with them.
As for the Timor, I didn't particularly want to like it as it is a very expensive blade, and not available in large quantities at a discount. That said, I couldn't help it. This might just be the favorite blade I've used yet. I believe I have the closest shave I've ever gotten. Even the obstinate parts of my face are smooth as they've ever been. On top of that, this thing just glided over my face with not a single tug or pull (although that is true for a lot of blades in my EJ DE89). The thing that is remarkable for me is the total and complete lack of any post-shave irritation at all. No redness, no itching, no burning. It's almost like I didn't shave - except that my face is so smooth all over. I heartily recommend these for anyone who is looking for a great blade and doesn't mind paying the price to at least try a pack. If they were cheaper I'd just go order a hundred even though I have other blades to try out.
I remember liking the Personna Med like this (winner of my first slugfest). But since I just used this one, I'm now thinking it was my best shave ever. Anyway, both of these, along with the Med, the Astra and the Voskhod will go into my "winner's pool", along with future winners of subsequent slugfests I'll do to see what the ultimate winner, or winners are. Eventually I'll start factoring in how many shaves I get as well (the Timors are reputed to last for several shaves by many). Now on to my next (and long-awaited for me) slugfest of the Russian made 7 O'clocks - Yellow, Green and Blue.
My prior winners:
1 - Derbys vs IPs vs Personna Reds vs Personna Barber vs Personna Med - Derby last, Meds first, and the other three were all nice, but behind the Med
2 - Astra SP vs Voskhod Teflon-Coasted vs Sputnik Teflon-Coated - Sputniks were better than I expected, very goo indeed. But the Astras and (surprise for me given all the praise for Astras in this forum) the Voskhods were just as good for me.
