I picked up this interesting Aloxite Safety Blade Hone. Canadian Pat. No. 252655, 1925. It's made by the Canadian Carborundum Co, Ltd. Niagara Falls, Canada. It comes in a navy blue cardboard box with the instructions printed inside the top cover. It is a black rectangular stone which is smooth, very fine grained and concaved in the middle with beveled edges. The instructions says:

"Place the blade in the hollowed or concaved side of the hone. By using two fingers, move the blade with a circular motion five or six light rotating strokes, then turn blade over and repeat this action. Use the lightest possible pressure."

I honed a couple of blades, haven't shaved with them yet, we'll see how the stone works. I bought it for $4. I also got six packs of 10 Wilkinson "Made in England" blades for $2 each, 60 blades for $12. They were new old stock, they had white plastic cases, with a black and red cardboard insert.

The hone would probably work better on carbon-steel blades than on stainless blades. But try both.

I don't think you'll get what you're looking for using a DE hone as it would take off any coatings that most modern blades have. Then again, I'd never tried it, so give it a go. I think that stone makes a decent straight hone, albeit on the small side.

This is a link to the Aloxite safety blade hone I just bought, this is pretty much the same, mine came in a different colored box.
