Does anyone have any comments on this EJ Super Badger Brush (http://www.theenglishshavingcompany.com/cgi-bin/psProdDet.cgi/EJ254||@cEdwin%20Jagger%20Super%20badger%20shaving %20brushes@b|0|user||25|), it is the most inexpensive Super at $40. It does not tell me knot size, but I assume is the same as the next one up or 19mm. I looked up reviews on this one but none available.
What do you think is this an easily better brush than C&E Best brush (http://store.crabtree-evelyn.com/acc130291.html) for $35 ? What if compared to C&E Super brush (http://store.crabtree-evelyn.com/edwin-jagger-acc130184.html) at $85 ? (Just a different handle, right?)
Thanks, I have been reading much about brushes and it just seemed that this was a great price.

The price is excellent because it is a discontinued line.

I have the EJ Superbadger Large (23mm) brush. This (http://www.theenglishshavingcompany.com/cgi-bin/psProdDet.cgi/3EJ256||@cEdwin%20Jagger%20Super%20badger%20shavin g%20brushes@b|0|user||25|)one. All I can say is that it's an outstanding brush. It lathers and lathers and lathers.... It's outstandingly finished, hasn't shed one hair, is soft yet the tips don't bend. I recommend it.

discontinued line does not mean reject, but maybe just not popular enough to keep making (at least, that is what I hope)
I just figured that since it has "SUPER" badger hair, it would be a great brush for the price. Any other Edwin & Jagger super badger just have a different handle, right? I mean, they all seem to have the same light bulb shape head.
Is the knot size different between 19mm and 21mm (in the medium (http://www.theenglishshavingcompany.com/cgi-bin/psProdDet.cgi/1EJ256||@cEdwin%20Jagger%20Super%20badger%20shavin g%20brushes@b|0|user||25|)) noticeable? And no I am not talking price difference.
Thanks for your input.

I have one of the EJ tortoise medium brushes in super. It is a great brush for the price. The tips aren't quite as soft as my shavemac 177, but it is more dense than my vulfix 2234 and not floppy. The brush I have has a bit of a lightbulb shape to it, but I would consider it a fan type. I also have a chatsworth EJ brush in super and it's shape is closer to a lightbulb, but not as pronounced as my shavemac.
For $40-$50 you can't go wrong with one of these brushes.

I got this brush in small and large. Quality on both is outstanding, comparable to my Shavemac and Vulfix in super.
I wish I would have purchased the medium, because for me, the small is just too small. It also does no hold as much water as the large (obviously). I love the large, but it is pretty big. I think the medium would be "just right".
This discontinued brush is a great deal, and whichever one you get will serve you excellently.

I used my last brush for about 15 years. Just got a C&E last year. I'm over 60 so I really don't need another badger but I'll probably order one of these tomorrow.

I have purchased the various EJ st and best badger brushes from the English Shaving Co, usually on sale, from The Gentleman's SHop, and C&E. The ST brushes are excellent! I'm not too impressed with the best badger though. They shed. I had 2 small C&E best badger brushes for $35 each(a good brush for beginners) and they shed 4-7 hairs at each shave. Last week I returned them to C&E and for $26.50 more or so I exchanged them for the new ebony handle ST.
I have 2 best badger Ex large in ebony & med i tortoise which I purchased on sale from the English shaving Co, and the ebony sheds. I got so used to fine & super-st badger that best and pure badger are scratchy on my face. Yesterday I shaved with a st blue & nickel handled Shavemac that I purchased from B&B, with Lemon AOS shave soap & Progress Razor. Loved the shave. Today I shave with a Caswell-Massey pure badger brush, same soap, Parker razor, derby blade, and I felt like I was dancing cheek to cheek with a porcupine. So much for my regimine.

So, I guess in conclusion it is a great buy for a "Super" because it is discontinued. However, I should get the medium size with the 21mm knot for $50.
How often does Edwin Jagger have any specials like these?
Do I check with The English Shaving Company, C&E, or The Gentleman's Shop?

I ordered the small super from ESC. The total was $41.35 including shipping. I have the small C&E in best and haven't had any hair loss problems with it.

Well, enough contemplation... I am placing the order tomorrow for the EJ "Super" Badger, Imitation turtle. I have it narrowed down and just have to decide between small or medium, not bad considering the multitude of brushes. Anyone still looking for a good first brush, this looks like a good deal in my opinion.
Thanks to all for your input

Just been reading the thread about the now discontinued Totry brushes. Here is the low down. EJ discontinued manufacture of the torty material as the demand was insufficient but any items in the sale are perfect and great value for money. EJ sale items, in any quantity, are only available from The English Shaving Company. The brush in white marble material is another example of a discontinued line but these brushes have been made using exactly the same standards as all other Edwin Jagger items. Knot size of the small brush is 19mm. I think there are actually only two left in stock now then that is it! Bridget.

I agree with you 100%. I have the EJ Super Large (23mm) and the Shavemac 177. The tips of the Shavemac are indeed a tad softer on the skin. The shape of the Shavemac knot is more conical than the EJ.

IMO, a medium is the best all around for the price. You go two steps up from a C&E. One step from "Best" to "Super" and another step from size "small" to "medium". If this is your 1st brush, I would not suggest a Large.

I am sorely tempted to pick up one of these brushes. Knowing how the knot size corresponds to brushes I have may convince me to actually order one! Which size, small or medium, corresponds to a C&E best brush? Also, how does the large compare to the size of the B&B brush? :001_unsur
Xavier

The C&E Best Badger is a "small" with a knot size of 19mm.
Since Edwin & Jagger makes the C&E brushes their "small" is the same 19mm.
Medium 21mm and Large 23mm.
The confusion is that the imitation tortoiseshell brushes, (http://www.theenglishshavingcompany.com/cgi-bin/psProdDet.cgi/EJ254||@cEdwin%20Jagger%20Super%20badger%20shaving %20brushes@b|0|user||25|) don't show the knot size, but they are the same as other described on same page.

I'm very much interested in the EJ Super that Xavier mentioned. Likewise in the EJ Marble brush that smithno suggested. I'm almost ready to buy either one. My problem is brush size. I'm inclined towards brushes with at least 60 mm bristle length, and a knot size of at least 23 mm.
So which of the brushes would have what I need? The EJ Super size medium, large, or extra-large? or the EJ marble medium or large?
Dang, those websites don't give specs. I'd appreciate it if anyone could give me the measurements of the EJ brushes.
Thanks.

According to this (http://www.theenglishshavingcompany.com/cgi-bin/psProdDet.cgi/3EJ257||@cEdwin%20Jagger%20Super%20badger%20shavin g%20brushes@b|0|user||25|) brush, which is the same type. A large brush should fit your needs as it is has a 23mm knot and a loft of 60mm.
If you want to be safe, just get and extra large and it will definitely meet your requirements. You can also email EJ and get the dimensions.
Xavier

The sizes of the brush correspond to the other EJ brush sizes. Just look around the website for small (http://www.theenglishshavingcompany.com/cgi-bin/psProdDet.cgi/9EJ256||@cEdwin%20Jagger%20Super%20badger%20shavin g%20brushes@b|0|user||25|), medium (http://www.theenglishshavingcompany.com/cgi-bin/psProdDet.cgi/1EJ256||@cEdwin%20Jagger%20Super%20badger%20shavin g%20brushes@b|0|user||25|), large (http://www.theenglishshavingcompany.com/cgi-bin/psProdDet.cgi/3EJ256||@cEdwin%20Jagger%20Super%20badger%20shavin g%20brushes@b|0|user||25|), extra large (http://www.theenglishshavingcompany.com/cgi-bin/psProdDet.cgi/5EJ256||@cEdwin%20Jagger%20Super%20badger%20shavin g%20brushes@b|0|user||25|) dimensions.
Knot sizes....: 19mm, 21mm, 23mm, 25mm
Bristle length: 46mm, 56mm, 60mm, 62mm
Makes me which I would had gotten a medium size brush instead of a small. I was not looking at bristle length, but there is quite a jump and a better buy (IMO). :001_smile

The post man delivered a pair of the EJ Super Badger brushes with the imitation marble handle. I couldn't decide whether to order the small or medium, so I ordered both. I got BADS bad! Pictures are below. Picture 1 is the two new EJ brushes with my other EJ-made brushes. The brush on the left is the $39 EJ Best from Duluth Trading Co. Next to it is the EJ Super Medium that came today and next to that is the C&E Best. Picture 3 is a close-up of these brushes. The two brushes on the right are the Super Marble in small next to a C.O. Bigelow Pure Badger. Eyeballing it, the medium looks to be same size as the C&E Best and the small is the same size as the small Pure. The size is not a big deal, but I had trouble visualizing the sizes against something I am familiar with.
Both burshes are extremely soft to the touch. I'll try to take some pictures of them in action and post a review this weekend. Bottom line is these are fantastic buys for very, very nice brushes! Oh, and both came with clear plastic stands...

Infotech, The size of the medium is similar. But the hair is much softer. I suspect after it's used a couple of times that it will bloom out nicely. At about $40, the small is only $5 more than the C&E, but the difference in quality is much, much greater than $5!!! :thumbup1:

On the pair I got, the small is slightly smaller than the C&E Best. Maybe there's a difference in the tortouse vs marble because my medium looks to be the same size as the C&E Best. In Rickw's picture, his small seems the same size. The handle on my small is also shorter than the C&E brush. At least on mine, the price difference is worth it! That said, you can't go wrong with either type/size!!

I am in the middle of a "soap" week. I don't use soaps very often, so it's a good test for the brush. All I can say is the small EJ Super is a LATHER MACHINE!!!! It whipped up some fantastic lather from the Pirates Cove Bay Rum soap! The brush has started to bloom nicely from just one use. It is much softer than the B&E Best. I can only assume the medium will just as pleasing. The bottom line is you can't go wrong with either brush!!! This is a fantastic buy! Don't wait and miss out!!

small is £22.00 medium is £27.50.
This will be my first real brush (my present one is really no big deal, I can't even figure out what it's made of). these £5,50 difference between them will have a strong impact on my budget (poor man from a poor country = currency is very unfavorable right know) specially because I would like to buy a Merkur HD too, so I would only go for the medium if its really superior to the small. Is it?
On the other hand, since I expect this brush to last long, I wouldn't like to make a bad decision.

As small vs. medium goes. Let me say one more time that I don't think you can go wrong with either! I find the medium a little softer because of the higher loft, but the small has become my favorite brush. I really didn't expect it to!!

My medium faux marble super came in the mail today--only 5 days after I ordered it. I find that incredible, considering the distance between me and Sheffield, England. Needless to say, I'll give the English Shaving Company a thumbs up. :thumbup1:
On first inspection, the brush feels like it is very well constructed and quite a value for the money. I lathered it up really good today, and was pleased to see that it did not start shedding hairs. I don't have a lot of brushes (in fact it is my third after a Vulfix 1001 and a Tweezerman), so I don't have a lot to compare it to, but I'd describe it as firm but soft. Its very comfortable to use and the medium seems like just the right size for me.
Of course, it still smells a bit badger-y, but that's no surprise. I'm sure it will go away with some use.
Overall--I'm a happy shaver.

The medium super is good on soaps? This is my main concern. I was wondering if the Best would be better for soaps.
(Oh, and are you supposed to hold the brush way down on the hairs to really work the soap into the brush from the soap? That's how I do it.... Not sure if that's right or not.)

Can any of you fine people take a picture of a Super that's been used a few times so I can see how it blooms? These don't seem to have the light-bulb-y shape that the others do, but I'm wondering if it blooms out real nice after a few uses. I'm thinking of going after a medium.
If not, if you could just let me know how much it differs from the picture on the website or anything, I'd love it. Thanks!

TENroaches, I don't know what brush you have now, but in comparison to my small C&E this brush does not bloom as much about 12-15% less. Bush as seen a month of good daily use. It might be do to a difference in Best vs Super and how the hair is packed in. However, I do have a small brush, so a medium would be different. It is a softer brush but it is hard to tell the difference between the two, so IMO both are good for soaps.
2 minor complaints/observations:
the handle on the C&E is easier to hold when making lather
being a dark handle (tortoise) the soap leaves a film after each lather (note above E&J shield I left a small spot uncleaned, before taking pic)

Holy cow. And the shipping was cheaper than if I'd just ordered it from C&E! If it's going to be that soon, I might hold off on shaving until I get that and get my Mama Bear soaps in the mail.

And it's ordered. Any idea how long I should expect shipping to take to NY from across the pond? Two weeks? A month? I have no idea.
I just ordered the medium marble from English Shaving Co. and it arrived in Ohio five days after I ordered. I was very very pleased with the shipping time.
I think you'll be pleased with the brush too. I've only used mine twice now, but I love it already.

Well, let me tell you about bad luck (or bad timing)
There I was on my must expected vacation around Europe and after seeing the prices of brushes in Italy (Acca Kappa and Omega) and Germany (don't remember the brand), I finally decided to buy the medium marble at the English Shaving Co. and have it delivered to my relatives' house in London.
Since I would be in Europe for two more weeks, and I heard the shipping was fast, I had no reason to worry.
But then:
First I got an e-mail the English Shaving Co. Because there was some caution on my credit card (the operator kind of flagged it) What made perfect sense since it was a Brazilian Credit Card asking for the Item to be delivered in London and the purchase itself was made on a computer in Vienna, while I was in that town).
OK, Costumer service was great and we sorted it out very quickly.
Since I would have a few more days in London there should be plenty of time for the shipment.
But Then:
Royal Mail went on strike precisely the during my last days in London. So, since I would probably not receive my marble in time, I just "had" to run to Taylors of old Bond Street to buy one of there cheapest Badger brushes, so I would at least have one to bring home.
Conclusion: My brush arrived two days after I left London (together with some samples I ordered) ha ha ha.
My relatives will forward it to me and the good part of the story is that now I will have 2 brushes after all. It's just hard to manage the Brush Delivery Anxiety Syndrome

Between the Small and the Large which would be recommended now? I don't really like the marble handle.

I decided to follow the recomendation of more experienced shaves and went for the medium.
I don´t like the marble either but the price difference made it worth it

My favorite is the Small! I also have a medium. I use the small 4 or 5 days a week right now! It handles both soap and creams with ease. Also remember that the handle increases in size as the knot size goes up. The medium handle is much larger than the small handle. I assume that the large handle is even larger. As I've said several times in this thread, you can't go wrong with either, especially at the clearance price!

FWIW, my comments of the line (C&E EJ) are not favorable. see here http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=28121 YMMV

Who has compared the C&E Best Badger ($35) to the C&E Super Badger ($85)? I was looking about them both and I definitely liked the size, feel, and look of the larger Super Badger, but felt the Best would work just fine for me. I was all set to buy it but they claimed to be out and not getting anymore in (the girl couldn't find it in the back...I wonder if they had any in the "cupboard" right under the display?).
I am wondering if anyone has tried them both and thinks the Super is worth the large increase in price? The hairs definitely felt more luxurious.

I emailed C&E about it when the C&E I went into said they don't have a $35 Best. Their reply was that it's an online exclusive now.
I have the next step up from Best for EJ, which I think is Super, and I think EJ makes C&E's other brushes, too. That being said, it works very nicely for creams, but I'm not thrilled with it for soaps. I use my Tweezerman for soaps, and I think it works nicely. My brother-in-law has the EJ (same as C&E) Best, and likes it way better than the Tweezerman, though. Right now, without having felt the Best, aside from a more expensive Best inside C&E, I'm thinking I should have gotten the Best from EJ, regardless of any price difference. Just because I have over 20 soaps and only 3 creams.
I know that's confusing. My writing skills went to pot when I went to school for engineering.

I don't know if this helps but there is the great thread comparing pure, best and silvertip Edwin Jagger Bushes.
Since it's Edwin Jagger who makes the C&E brushes, it might help to answer your question

In my opinion, if you're going to spend $85 on a brush, you can do much better than the C&E super. (On the other hand, if you're only looking to spend $35, the C&E Best is pretty much a can't-miss)

Well said, thank you sir!
I have EJ Super badger brush that I use daily. The problem I have is that the brush keeps shedding. I find a loose or broken one almost every time I use it. Has this happened to others?
