Do women not understand that these are dead birds?
The local fly shops have had to order special (i.e., lesser quality) hackle for the women who do this. My friend who cuts my hair has asked me to find feathers for her shop (I won't giver her any of mine), but it's a hassle to find hackle anywhere. Which is to say, it's a hackle hassle.
Next time I get my hair cut I'll take a pheasant tail feather and ask her to stick it in my hair. She'll probably give a mohawk. It'll be worth it.

Next it will be silvertip badger hair.
I am absolutely stunned by this. A good saddle must have 750 feathers, and they're getting 2 bucks a feather. Wow.
I had to check ebay, and I'm stunned.
Here's a buy it now:

$19.77 for three feathers!!!! I have a nice silver grizzly saddle that I thought was way too much at $60 or so. Maybe it's time to sell a few feathers. :tongue_sm
Hopefully this fad will soon pass. In the meantime I'm hiding my grizzly full saddles.
BTW, those are Hoffman saddles that are going for $100-$200. I think the last Hoffman Hackles came out in about 2002.

The trend has become so popular a company online even sells feather extensions for dogs.:death:

Maybe we should tie flies out of women's hair.

I looked up what was going crazy and it seems to be only the longest grizzly saddles. The shorter ones seem normal prices, as the non-patterned feathers. I figured if I could get $400 for some feathers I am not using, nor plan to use anytime soon, I can do a good number of things!
But alas, I have black feathers and white feathers, but no black and white feathers!

Thinking about this.... perhaps this may not be such a bad idea on the long run... right?
Fashion trends change quickly and those that jumped on the wagon will dispose of their feathers....:001_smile

My only fear is that this fashion trend becomes "timeless." It really is not new, but it is rather publicized currently. You are right, in a few months you may be buying hairpieces by the dozen for less than the cost of new hackle. I suspect that the natural colors will hang on the longest.

Holy Cow!! $560 for a Silver Saddle!

Ok, I finally decided to list my mostly unused #1 Hoffman Grizzly Saddle. A few years ago I purchased saddle packs for Size 18 and smaller flies. The saddle is mainly size 14-16.
With 4 days left, it's at $305!! That's a whole lot of Trumpers/Creed/Penahligons. :P
