I'm thinking of buying one of these as a finishing hone.Tim Zowada's comparisons seem to show it as being a good finisher. Anybody own one? Can anyone comment on their seemingly low popularity versus apparent quality?

I know that JohnP. uses this hone and really likes it. Personally I have never used it so I cannot comment on it; however, I do know that it does need to be cleaned often to be effective. The more popular finishing stones like the belgian yellow coticule do not need to be cleaned, but the trade off is that they do need to be lapped every once in a while to maintain a flat honing surface conducive to producing an even and sharp edge.

Have one - and like it quite a bit. It is used in the hone/paste comparo I am finishing up, and it is quite a good hone. Honestly though? I think pastes are really tough to beat.

i never thought of using Arkansas stones for razors. I would have thought they would be to rough.

I value Joel's opinion of the Spyderco, but also Robert Williams uses them. Since he forges his own blades, I also value his opinion as well!

Randy,

I think you meant to link Robert's other site (without the "custom" in the url)? There are some words from Robert, Joe Lerch, the other Randy, etc. in the archives

Check out this thread, http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=16876&highlight=spyderco It will give you the link to another thread as well with more detail.

I have the Spyderco UF and I LOVE it. It is great for the final polish and once you get the pressure correct for the type of blade, you will get repeatable outstanding results.

I like my Spyderco hones . Wouldn't trade them for anything else but maybe an Arkansas stone . Tried and true , works every time .

What's your fascination with dead threads? This thread (was) two years old until you reanimated it. You've created over a dozen threads zombies in just the last week...

.

I don't know, but I have a feeling you were the one the one who gave him the Arkansas ammunition when you said their composition was similar to a Spyderco...

cityjim, who are you? What is your deal? It's clear you're not here to actually learn or discuss anything, as several of us have said we would gladly talk shop with you if you would stop trying to own other people's accomplishments as your own.

Why do you hate straight razor users so much? What did any of us on B&B ever do to you before you started talking smack?

It's clear that you read the posts around here, and you get just enough material to sound like perhaps you learned something, but then you post these ridiculous claims that you have to know are way off base, or you go bashing well established members of the community.

Are you this guy, a guy who cant even say Solignen when he bashes a product he didn't learn how to use? Or are you a copy cat?

Please, for the sake of all involved, knock it off!

Which reminds me, I broke out the big translucent (12x3x1) bench stone last night and honed up one of my Livi/Takeda's that hadn't really ever been right ever since I got it. It took awhile because these are after all very slow hones, but the Hall-of-fame game was a bit of a snoozer (except for the fake field goal statue-of-liberty play at the beginning). And I was rewarded with a really lovely shave this morning.

I have a Norton branded Ark translucent (8x3x1/2) that I want to try on razors someday since I paid almost $100 for it a few years ago. Man, a 12x3x1 would be a chunk-o-change! Did you lap it or polish the surface? I have a black surgical that is almost that big. I tried lapping it and it didn't go well.

Lapped it and polished it, though it could still use a bit more of both. It's working pretty well ATM though. That last bit of lapping and polishing makes a big difference though. I've got a little 4x3 pink translucent that looks like a piece of glass that does wonders on a razor. It's just so small though, it is only really practical for 5/8 sizes, and it's a bit of a trial even so.

If its anything like the UF, lapping it on 1k grit paper really brings it to a whole new level. It may act like 14k after Joel got done with it, but I've got mine to act like a 30k stone.

Don't even ask how long it took me.................

My UF is somewhere between my 15k and 30k shaptons. The biggest problem lapping the big arkansas is it's longer than the sheets of sandpaper. If only I'd thought of that before I sprung for the extra length.

@SavantStrike

ah, this video is HILARIOUS. It truly made my day,
although I´m not quite sure if I should cry or laugh.

"Yeah, you know I checked the blogs and everybody says you get what you pay for, put I am totally smarter than everybody and got a dovo straight razor shavette for 11 Bucks. And geuss what, it´s crap. How come?"

(not that I´m against shavettes ^^ )
