Ok, let me update my experience with the Sledge.

After receiving this new gem of a razor and adding it to the rotation, I was somewhat amused by the amount of members who tried it, hated it(didn't care for it), and sold it-in less time than it took to ship to them in the first place.

I figured that Merkur had not let me down as of yet(VISION,HD, Slant) so I would give the new baby time. For the past 6 weeks, I have shaved with no other razor. This focused usage of the sledge really helped me in deciding irrevocably the disposition of the razor.

In the first week of usage, I loaded it with an Israeli Personna. My first shave went initally well, but I did notice road rash beginning. At first I wanted to attribute this to the new razor, but experience made me stop and think- "I haven't had road rash since forever, so what am I doing wrong?" On the next shave I payed more than the usual attention to my technique and found that I had been using too much pressure. Why? because the weight and feel of the sledge is deceptive-your brain thinks HD and your muscle memory says HD, but HD it's not. Think of the person who has lived all their life in one part of town and then moves to another part of town. They leave work after a tiring day to head home and before they realize it, they are in front of their old address and do not know how they got there! Those of us who own and love the HD have to overcome the mental pattern we have ingrained upon us. We know that the 38C is heavier and longer than the HD, but the head profile is the same, so we automatically go into 'HD mode' for our shave.(enough psychoanalyzing :out: )

Once I made this mental adjustment(which definitely took about 2 weeks before I stopped thinking) the road rash went away, my shaves improved immensely, and I finished up the week thinking not bad- no BBS except once, but no reason to get upset.

It was time to move on to the 38C and Derby combo. During the 2nd week there were times that I had to remind myself that "ok Marty, this is the sledge-pay attention!" However, I was able to shave much closer, faster, and with no irritation.

Now the moment of truth was upon me- load up the 38C with a Feather for the 3rd week. If my technique wasn't right or I was slipping into HD mode, I would know about it immediately! :yikes:

Here is where the 38C came into its own( )-mind, body and razor became one. My shaves were effortless and resulted in faceturbation. I did not have to 'pay attention' to the 'nth' degree and there were no nicks, cuts, rash, or irritation to be found. :a50:

To be sure, in the next 3 weeks I repeated my blade usage pattern to make sure of my findings. Lo and behold, the shaves with the IP became much better than with the Derby, with the Derby and the Feather staying about the same. This surprised me, but overall, I am very happy with this razor. At this point in time, it has become my #1 razor in my rotation- or at least until Merkur comes out with a Slant version of it!

So if you are considering purchasing the sledge, do so!- RESISTANCE IS FUTILE!(now you knew that would be in this lenghty post somewhere. ) But remember, you will have to 'relearn' how to shave all over again with it. It feels different, while looking like what you already know. Take that into account and smooth shaving to all.

Marty, Great post. Your feedback is very helpful and enlightning. I too find the 38C and the Feather combo unbeatable. And yes the 38C has moved into the top of the rotation.

Awesome post Marty!!:thumbup1:

One thing I find interesting though is your comment on the "sledge" causing you to put too much pressure. When I use the Futur, I find the opposite is true. The weight actually helps keep less pressure on my face.

I guess another YMMV thing!!

Great post. I was one who tried the Sledge (good name) and found that it didn't work. For me, it wasn't razor burn but a tendency of the razor to twist in my wet hand: low friction + spiral engraving on handle + substantial weight.

I've used the 38C almost exclusively from the beginning (of my wetshaving career), but even so I know I've been also guilty of applying excessive pressure with it. In my case I think it is due to the weight of the razor: in order to make sure that the razor doesn't slip out of my hand I have to grip it harder (compared to, say, the Gillette Slim), and this in turn causes tendency to press harder.

Disclaimer: I've never even touched a 38C (yet, but I'm lusting after a 12C, hoping there will be a 12G).
But, with Futur and Vision, I got into the habit of keeping the towel I used for the hot towel prep (and would use again for WWR and CWR) folded and sitting on the edge of the basin. Now after lathering, it's automatic to dip my right hand into the water in the basin, rub it against the folded towel surface before picking up the razor. Your hand doesn't have to be absolutely dry, it just has to have NO SOAP on it, and it doesn't slip. Or, it works for me, anyway...

Interesting. I agree on the NO SOAP rule. My solution to this is to always rinse not just the razor head but also the gripping point with hot water, when cleaning the lather off the head between strokes. Bonus: twirl the handle in your fingers when rinsing grip point to really get all the soap/cream out.

The other problem for me is I think that I grip the 38C, which is much heavier, at a point on the handle beyond its center of mass, which means that gravity makes it naturally want to rotate down in my grip. So although it may not slip out of my hand, the natural tendency to swivel away from face makes it a little tricky to keep the corret shaving angle steady.

Great post Marty; very insightful!

My experience with the 38C was pretty good from the start. It was my first Merkur so I didn't have the challenge of having to switch back into HD mode. Also it is the most aggressive razor I have used to date so I approached my first attempts with this razor with care.

I agree, Marty! Give the 38C some time. One or two shaves is not a fair comparison. I must admit that at first I found the razor heavy and clunky, but it gave me a good shave from the get-go. But after a couple of weeks, the razor suddenly became light and agile. Near BBS without trying and no burn or nicks.

The 38C is now my #1 razor.

Concerning aggressiveness:
I find the Merkur 1904 much more aggressive. Can't use Feathers with it, peels off too much skin. Did an experiment this morning. Put the same Feather blade I'd been using for a couple of days into my Slim (setting 7). Got a great shave, but now after a half-hour I'm experiencing some razor burn. But I never get burned with the "Sledge"--regardless of the blade (I've tried all the blades in the sample pack with this razor).

For me, the 38C is the Ultimate Razor. For those on the fence, keep at it! Give this superb razor at least a month of exclusive use. You won't regret it.

I love my 38C "sledgehammer"! (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showpost.php?p=240496&postcount=8) It is the only razor I have used since it arrived. Soon it will go into the rotation, but for now, it is at the top of the heap!

I opened up my razor drawer today to grab a new blade/razor combo.
My trusty old LH classic was in there next to the LH/HD.
Man, the LH looked like an anorexic model or something. Long and really skinny.
I went ahead and used it today, got a fine shave but it felt so small and light in my hand the entire time.
It is funny how your perceptions and habits can change so quickly when using different tools for a while.
Neither Merkur will be going anywhere though.

I have rotated the 38C among a small group of razors since I received it. It has had the majority of "Face Time" however and for very good reason. Of the MANY razors I have used, it is the premier double edge tool that I have found to be pure luxury of balance and quality. I plan on using it the majority of the time for the rest of the year as it simply gives me the best of the best.
