Ok, I think I'm going to try another monogamous week...

When people find out that I've been married-and-divorced three times, I tell 'em that I'm a serial monogamist.

Note: This does not affect my standing vis-a-vis eating a mixture of cooked oatmeal, rye flakes, oat bran, wheat bran, and ground flaxseed for lunch every day, which makes me a cereal polygamist.

After a relaxing trip to Tennessee for Father's Day Weekend I'm back home and tried a vintage Gillette NEW circa 1930's that arrived early this morning. I wanted a cleanup project and I gave it a pretty good cleaning and shine but it still needs some detailing. After the SOTD pic you can see my before and after pics of the "NEW"....

I didn't take a pic, after a morning start like that I just wasn't in the mood. Although, that's how men shaved in the past, before running water became widely available, so perhaps I should shut up...

Thoughts:
This is not the shave I planned on having as I was thinking my bowl of Tabac was next up in rotation. However, being rather sleepy I decided to sleep in an extra 20 minutes which lead to a bit of a rushed shave so I went to Proraso - my pinch hitting cream - instead. The shave was refreshing and I smell great, but it just doesn't hold the same sort of satisfaction as if I had gone with what I intended in the first place.

Shave set up for the week:

After the shower its...

Olive oil soap, brand unknown, as a pre-shave,
1955 Gillette Tech with Merkur blade
Palmolive Brushless shave cream
Dickinson's Witch Hazel
Euphoria ASB

I really like the Techs. This is the first week with this Tech. I bought it off of eBay three weeks ago or so and it seems to have been hardly used at all. I know some consider them too mild, but they work so well for me: always smooth and close, rarely a nick, never any irritation. BBS is getting so routine!

It could get awkward if someone walked into the bathroom only to find me holding a razor to my neck and listening to Soundgarden...

As for the lather, the brush was clean, I think the lather might have been a little on the dry side or perhaps under developed. I love the scritchy boar hair but maybe I didn't factor in the longer lathering time.

Although I expected a floral scent (was told that this was Jasmine-scented), the shaving soap had a decidedly animalic smell to it, not unlike the initial badger-smell of my newly-rebristled shaving brush -- not off-putting, just unexpected.

If anyone knows what EO(s) is/are contained in it, I'd appreciate knowing; also, I'm open to suggestions for a complementary EDT/cologne.

This was the soap being offered for trade or sale that was described as pungent, correct?

So it gets pungent and now 'animalic'? Sounds like one I'll have to eschew! (even though I know it was a single run item)

Yup; but when I think of pungent, I think in terms of Stilton or Limburger cheese, not Jasmine.

Well, between "pungent" and "animalic", I don't want to split hairs (especially not badger hairs  ) -- the truth is that it's smell is not the delicate jasmine I'm accustomed to, and I'm just trying to get a handle on it. Again, I didn't find it at all off-putting, just unexpectedly strong... and the lather! Worth every bit of its "not-easily-described" smell.

I do not wish to be vulgar about it, but in describing my newly-acquired, previously-owned, Jasmine-scented QED Luxury Lather shaving soap, I seem to have stepped on my Johnson. What's worse, is that my choice of words did not convey the message which I'd intended; in fact, they seem to have given a negative impression (based on the input of more than a few individuals, both publicly on B&B, as well as privately via PMs and email). So:

I wish to apologize to Charles of QED for any hurt which my words caused him personally, as well as for any harm which they have caused (or might yet cause) to his business and its/his reputation.
I erred in my use of metaphor, when describing the Jasmine scent; moreover, some of the words I used were unclear and caused misunderstanding, rather than creating a greater understanding. Specifically:

I used the word animalic to describe the (to me) robust, energetic, and powerful smell of the Jasmine EO; not to compare it to the stench of rotting meat, or the feral smell of a wild animal. While speaking with Charles over the telephone, I came to understand that the individual who originally ordered this Jasmine-scented shaving soap (it was a custom order) had specified an extremely high concentration of Jasmine EO and, even though Charles convinced him to accept a significantly lower percentage of EO, it was still quite high; hence, its robust -- rather than more delicate -- aroma.
I find the smell of a new badger shaving brush to be a nice smell. Some of you might recall that I recently received a re-bristled shaving brush from Shavemac -- well, unlike many people, I did not shampoo the new bristles, or otherwise attempt to neutralize its particular smell; instead, I used it, and let Time and Nature take their course and, after the second or third use, any "animal" smell was gone.

As I wrote in my SOTD entry, the QED Jasmine-scented Luxury Lather shaving soap fully lived-up to its name: the lather was luxurious, more than I'd ever experienced from any other shaving soap or cream (no offense intended to the fine products from TGQ, SCS, or MB); and the scent transported me, through Time and Space, back to the days when I lived in Jerusalem, and all the good memories associated with it.

Rabbi Yisroel Meir Kagan, זצ"ל, known as the Chafetz Chayim (a late-19th/early-20th-century Jewish scholar), was (among many things) highly regarded for his teachings on שמירת הלשון (Guarding one's tongue). He recognized that the power of speech and the strength of words were, at the same time, one of Man's greatest blessings, as well as one of Man's greatest curses. Once spoken, words take on a life of their own; all the more so, when they are passed from one person to the next, and their tone (not to mention content and intent) become changed. This also holds-true for the written word, when printed and posted in a public venue.

I cannot erase the words I wrote in my SOTD entry today, nor those in my reply to ada8356; however, I hope that what I've written in this posting will, in some small way, help to counteract the damage I've done and the pain I've caused. I extend my apologies to the members of B&B, and hope that you will forgive me for my unintended, but no less serious, mistakes.

I'm with you on enjoying the "earthy, robust" scents. I really like that Ylang Ylang smells (to me) a bit like burnt rubber, and that unadulterated vetiver (like the "very v" stuff from scs sue) smells very very "earthy." That having been said, I also really love nice floral scents and fresh, clean, barbershop scents. I guess what I'm saying is I see where you're coming from with both the descriptions of and appreciation for the scents.

I guess I should also apologize for any part that I played in the apparent misunderstanding.

Just to be clear, I completely understood that you did in fact like the scent (and performace) of the soap.

I was just making of light of the humorous adjectives used to describe the scent... much as I chuckle about the adjectives used to describe vetiver.

Jay,

Welcome to my world, I call it the Working Class Hero Shave.

Will- All kidding aside, I could get by quite nicely with that setup. Gloria Vanderbilt once said something along the lines of, "It doesn't take long to get used to riding in a private car. One adapts to it almost immediately."
I'll go one step further and say that we tend to adapt to things too easily. Coates shaving cream- ho hum. Musgo Real- not again. Penhaligons- yawn.
The aforementioned, low tech rig will still provide a finer shave than those experienced by better than 99% of the rest of the world, including almost every doctor, lawyer, or professor that you'll meet. Knowledge, not money, is the key.

Using the tried and true, pedestrian products that have stood the test of time will enhance one's appreciation of "the good stuff". Using Aqua Velva makes all of those $20-30 bottles of high end concoctions last a whole lot longer, too.

Hi DJ,

I really like it, I just got it a few weeks ago. It seems to hold a great edge so far and is very easy to use. I did hone both sides and shave with it on both the convex and concave sides.

It's smaller than I pictured it maybe ranging in size from 4/8 at the toe to 5/8+ at the tip. It has been a great shaver so far.

Joel has also written a great review on his in the review section.

Thanks,

Those are the oddest razors in the entire world of shaving. I had one about two years ago that I got rid of (I regret that, now), but I just couldn't manage the required contortions at the time.

As for honing, I'll leave this to the SRP experts who have hands on experience with these, but if they are anything like single bevel knives, you do not hone them the same way as standard, double edge knives.

Two days of whiskers fell under the might of the slant and QED leaving me BBS with no sensitive spots pointed out by either the alum or the Speick.

Whenever I read your SOTD posts, I feel like I'm standing over the hood of a car and you're at the wheel. "She's got a 6.5 liter V12 engine with 663 hp at 7800 rpm. I'm talking 0-60 mph in 3.8 seconds. I've gone 180 mph on her but she's got a top speed of 216 mph; barely legal. They only made 300 of these, you know. Yup, she's a real machine. Listen to that baby purrrrrr!" he says, as he floors the gas pedal. I stand in awe, wishing, hoping, that one day, someday.. sigh.

Great razor!!!:001_wub: (That was the description of a 2007 Competition Lamborghini Murcielago).

FRIDAY
I decided to try a couple of newly acquired items this morning.
I opened a very similar package of Vintage NOS Made in England
Wilkinson Chromium Blades Originally Priced at $1.69 for 10 Blades.
I also used my cleaned sanitized and polished 1975 Gillette Super Adjustable.
Coupled that with my designated T&H 1805 / KENT BK4 Combo, and finished
with some Clubman Talc and Old Spice Original AS.

The Wilkinson appeared as fresh as a new IP or Derby upon opening the wax paper wrapping after sliding it from it's plastic confines. I don't know the age of the blades but they performed as good as an IP or Derby for my face. Mind you I was being VERY careful as I have never advocated using vintage blades since the cost of perfectly good new blades are so affordable. I got a very nice ...close...shave out of the Wilkinson blade and have plans to use them again. I did throw the blade away after the first use. I might tempt fate and try a second shave with one down the line. The Long Handle Black Super Adjustable Gillette Date Code V-1 (1975) performed like a champ on adjustment #3. I was going to keep this one a mild 4 pass shave.... I really liked the feel of the Big Gillette. I had previously shaved with one before selling a similar one months ago. All in all a great shave.... the T&H 1805 is stellar and the little BK4 lathers like a machine....

I acquired the New Gillette and Super-Max blades from B&B member Papasmurf in a trade. Thanks for the trade Papasmurf. I have to say the shave was excellent today. I’ve been looking for a 2nd razor to go along side my Slant that would give me real close shaves and I think I have it. I’m trying to have only two razors that are my go to razors. I took this advice from another forum member who had a ton of razor then sold all but two for this reason. I’m sure just like he did RAD will kick in for me to.

I must confess I have skipped the shaves yesterday and this morning. I am feeling like quite the scruffian! I am looking forward to the next shave...where I shall whack the whiskers with a vengeance.

This morning, tho, I did shower with my father's day T&H 1805 bath soap, splashed some Speick AS, and applied some T&H Trafalgar EdT.

It really has been a while since I've skipped 2 days in a row. I am a rebel!

19?? silver-plated Gillette "Old Type" (DG emblem) w/Israeli Personna blade
"Frank", Sterling-silver pure-badger shaving brush
"Nora", Sterling-silver shaving mug
QED Vetiver shaving soap (hat-tip to Charles!)
No styptic pencil
Witch-hazel
L'Occitane Vetyver EDT (hat-tip to Scotto!)

The QED website lists this shaving soap as "not-for-faint-hearted Vetiver"; but I'm not sure the adjectival phrase does justice to the Vetiver. If I were asked to describe it, I would call this "pure-hearted Vetiver", for indeed, it is of a purity which I have yet to encounter in any other shaving soap or cream that calls itself "Vetiver".

The lather was luxurious on all counts: aroma, lubrication, and staying-power. Forty swirls of my dampened "Frank" on the shaving-soap tub, followed by a few minutes of gentle twirling in "Nora" (accompanied by added dribs-and-drabs of hot water), and I had sufficient lather for four passes with my "Mystery" razor (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=21707) and a photo session afterward.

The L'Occitane Vetyver complements this shaving soap beautifully, and I am grateful to Scotto for his product review (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=1617&highlight=vetyver).

The only thing missing from this picture (verbal and visual) is a label for the QED shaving soap which reads "Vetiver", instead of the generic "Luxury Lather". I hope that Charles will send me one, when they're ready (and one for that robust "Jasmine", as well).

Smooth shaving!
