I think he's the one - wrote a book called "Masque of the Red Death" Did most everything wrong - all the skin bumps shaved off, put too much pressure on the blade, wrong angle at times. I did, however leave myself with a great shave. All the spots that usually give me trouble with a safety razor came out o.k., probably because I expected trouble and took extra care. Upper lip - fine; points of the jaw - fine; outer edges of the chin - fine. The bottom of my neck with the wide strip of skin bumps - not so fine. I've used an alcohol-based after shave, a regular one, until my bay leaves have pickled enough in Jamaican rum.

There's no better way to teachyourself patience than to persist in learning how to shave with a straight razor. My wife hasn't been able to succeed in this in the past 32 years, so a miracle may be in the making - who knows?

Thanks to all for the advice I've gleaned, and WILL follow next time.

Thanks to Lynn for a superbly honed George F. Butler Sheffield steel razor manufactured a long long time ago in a universe far far away.

Now, if I can cull out a way to strop, out of the 60 or so separate methods recommended..............
