View Full Version : Interested in a B&B-Con?
What could be more fun than Badger & Blade on the internet? Some of us got together to ponder that very question, and after enough Scotch to get the creative juices flowing, that answer was pretty clear, Badger & Blade in real life! Meet-ups and get togethers are nothing new for our community, so we figured we'd like to see it on a grander scale. Loosely, we're thinking a convention in Las Vegas, with vendors, covering shaving naturally, but even some of the gentleman's interest topics that we discuss on a daily basis, like cigars and coffee, as well as some instructional clinics.
Before we start investing the time and resources into getting the gears cranking, we thought it'd make sense to hear from you, since just like on the web, B&B without its members would be a downright lonely place. So, real quick and informal, if you'd be interested in meeting up in Las Vegas, vote in the poll, and speak up!
Thanks all!

I would definitely be interested in a Vegas trade show. Definitely would beat the other trade shows I've been to there. What is "Art's Still King"? I voted for it, as I am always in support of a monarchy over these current shenanigans...

I'd be interested in a "World Con" and offer to assist - depending on the time of year I may or may not be able to make it.
Does it have to be Las Vegas? Any possibility of it being a "Shaving Capital" like London or Rome - where we could sample Italian Soft Soaps?

Sounds like a great idea, but Vegas is too far and I don't gamble. Instead of having one big conclave, maybe you should consider organizing a number of regional ones, in or near major cities. Also think it would be interesting to invite vendors to preview and/or demonstrate their wares.

Join up with the other sites. Create a consortium/convention for all wet shave interests. Sell vendor tables, individual & group tables for den emptying etc. Speakers, on going demos, workshops etc.
Before picking Las Vegas perhaps determine where population centers are and maybe one East and one West. Start smaller and build unless there is a compelling response to fill a big convention room.

Las Vegas sounds like a good "central" location where lots of us could get together for fun times.
Memphis or Kansas City could also be fun places to go (when the weather settles down).
Or we could do a West Coast get-together in Vegas and an East Coast in Atlantic City?
Bottom line: I like the idea. Tell us more!
Larry
Thanks for the good ideas everyone, and keep 'em coming!!!!!
We picked Vegas for several reasons. It's a destination location, people can bring their significant others and not worry about them sitting bored in a hotel all day, there's something for everyone to do, even if they're not primarily interested in shaving. Further, Vegas is the cheapest, most accessible option out there. There are a ton of non-stop or one-stop flights, and there is a glut of good hotel rooms, especially during the off-seasons.
Ideally, an East Coast meet, or even international meets would be fantastic, and are definitely a consideration, but as they say, gotta start somewhere. :wink2:

Vegas is a short hop for me, so heck yeah, if the timing is good. Do you have dates in mind?
There are really good hotel deals now, particularly off the strip. But, Saturday nights are always more pricey. In Downtown the Golden Nugget is a pretty nice place. Stayed there for business and it was fine.
I would probably be willing to help with some funds so some of our student members could attend. It has been 35 years, but I remember being perpetually broke in school. :001_rolle I surely did not have the funds for a weekend jaunt to Vegas. We lived on grilled cheese sandwiches and pasta. No ramen noodles back then. I could barely afford the bus to get back home for the holidays.
I would truly like to meet some of more experienced members and hear what they have to show and tell on a range of topics, both formally and over a cold one.
Did anyone suggest some sort of a swap event also? Maybe, I missed it above.

That is the key right there! Unless you're driving, this is going to be as cheap as possible. Any smaller city, no matter it's location, would end up costing a lot more for us attending. The only other good option would be to have multiple locations. If they did this, they would not get the same response from vendors or deals from the local establishments since each one would be a smaller convention.

THANK YOU, it was getting confusing reading all the "let's do it in my town" posts. Vegas is the cheapest flight I can think of, and unless you fear flying, I don't see any difference between flying there and flying anywhere else in the country, the longest flight you can take in the states is like 6 hours, absolutely nothing, an afternoon tops. Driving is more expensive in general too.
Can you tell I really want to go to this?

That would be great. Especially if it was a fight weekend.
Keep in mind any BIG event in Vegas means much higher room rates and availability. Factor in that most Big events are on weekends and the rates double.

I believe the opposite is the case. A larger group gets lower room rates. Given the 40% drop if gambling revenues in most casinos, the room occupancy rate is lower than ever before.

Sounds wonderful! Vegas is a good location simply because of the sheer number of potential venues that are basically MADE for conventions.
I personally have a $40 loss limit if I gamble, and quit if I'm up significantly, so I'm usually not playing for long. I live close, so I'd drive up there for sure!

Sounds wonderful! Vegas is a good location simply because of the sheer number of potential venues that are basically MADE for conventions.I'm in full agreement that Las Vegas would be a good host, because of its central location and convention readiness.
But I'd like us to keep Atlantic City in the back of our minds, too ... if the first one is a success, we can hold the second one in AC. Each city could host every other year, maybe do one every six months if it proves popular enough and there's sufficient draw.
I personally have a $40 loss limit if I gamble, and quit if I'm up significantly, so I'm usually not playing for long. I live close, so I'd drive up there for sure!I'm not big on gambling either. I play about $20 a month on MegaMillions and Powerball lotteries, and sometimes drop into a casino and spend $10 on penny and nickel slots in order to kill an hour or so to sober up after a night out partying.
But even without gambling, both Vegas and AC offer a lot of tourist attractions and things to do. I, for one, would love to catch some of the live performances, especially Cirque du Solei.

Life without gambling would be like shaving with no beard or hair growth. Empty, at least a little. Gambling is good for the spirit.

I work for a major knife company and one of my reponsibilities is coordinating shipments to trade shows worldwide. I don't want to be a downer but these events can be extremely expensive to organize and execute. Hall rentals, freight, exhibition companies and drayage to and from the show can be many thousands of dollars per exhibitor. Judging from what I have seen on B&B there would be crossover with the attendees of many of the major knife and outdoor products trade shows. It may be possible to piggyback onto an existing show in Vegas or elsewhere. The BLADE show in Atlanta might be worth a look.

Depends what order you count them in. I read left-to-right, so Hawaii is #1. (that pi$$e$ Texas off, but I just start talking about putting kidney beans in chilie con carne, and then Texas just ignores me.)

That was my thought too, I'm going to WorldCon in Reno this year and have been somewhat involved with some of the details and I can tell you it is uber expensive to do something large scale. But a gun show or knife show could be fairly easy to piggy back onto and possibly attract new members.
Austin or Dallas could work for some of these shows, its centrally located in the states. We have Enchante here in Austin and I think it would be easy to get Charles to set up a booth.

Love the idea, but funds and time do not allow. Perhaps, one day, a coordinated multi-city event? Like, B&B gatherings on the same weekend, in different cities around the world? That way those outside of the U.S. aren't left out, or traveling from Europe or further away. Boston for the Northeast, Maybe D.C. for the mid atlantic area? L.A. for those on the west coast, maybe Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa for Canada, all over the map...Either way, those who go, enjoy and share pictures!

The chances I'll be able to attend in person are slim ... but I think its a great idea!
Depending on the timing, I am sadly forced to agree. I will be in CONUS for five weeks next summer, and then after that it's off to Asia for two to three years. As much as I would love to attend, it's harder to justify a ticket from the Far East than it is from the DC area. I really want to, though.

Just a thought here, A number of groups I belong to have regional meetings to increase the ability of folks to attend. Las Vegas would probably work well for those in the western US/Canada, cheap flights and rooms, but might be tough for those in the eastern US/Canada, or overseas.
