can I get comparable shaves with just about any razor with the right blade?

And, is it my imagination, or...
can I get better shaves if I alternate razors?

There are some razors that just don't work for me. Mostly the milder razors. I'm not doing a 4 pass. I need a razor that will do it in two and certainly no more than 3 passes.

Lately I've alternated between my 40's SS and Red Tip, which are supposed to be at different ends of the aggressiveness spectrum, but find little difference if the blade and prep is the same. So I see what you're saying.

Open comb razors are another matter though. Can't get the hang of them regardless of what I load.

A couple of months ago I might have said you can't get a great shave from a superspeed or a tech--they're just too mild. But if you put the right blade in a tech you can get a perfect shave from it. Same with the superspeed. I think you won't get the same results with the same blade in every razor, but I think you can get a perfect shave from any razor with the right blade. I think practice helps, too. I tend to do better after a couple of days with a razor than the first time I pick it up.

For me the fun is in trying different blades in each razor.

All about blade and technique in my humble opinion.

+1 for the right technique, getting to know the razor and a reasonably sharp and smooth (not always the same) blade...

I'm now convinced that I can get a BBS shave with about any DE out there (with a good blade). It's just that some are more fun than others. Some work, but bore me.

If you don't mind making more passes, sure it's possible.
Drew said it best; "I'm not doing a 4 pass. I need a razor that will do it in two and certainly no more than 3 passes."

Technique. Prep. The right blade - used to the point of nausea by defenders of weak, ineffective designs:lol:

Why not save time and blade money by going with a REAL DEAL razor:thumbup1:????????

I have only used safety razors for a year, but what I have found myself doing recently (instinctively) is 3-4 passes in one on each part of my face. I'll lather up, start with the right side of the face, go down, then across, then against the grain, and repeat this procedure with the right side of my neck, then the moustache and chin and adam's apple area, and then move over to the left side. Then I touch up wherever necessary after feeling my face, and re-lather areas when needed. For me, the shave takes about the same amount of time as it did previously, but I am less likely to forget to shave the stubble left behind earlier.
