I am fairly new to straights and was wondering what you collectors prefer when it comes to American razors? I have aquired a decent collection of Sheffield steel from the start, last November, but I'm looking to pick up some home grown steel here in the future and would love some suggestions on classics or must haves.

Regards
Louis

The Case razors are quite popular. Genco too.

I find there are lots of excellent US made razors. I like the larger Case Red Imps and Union Spikes in particular.

I just wish there were more 13/16ths hollow ground US razors. Seems most tend to max out at 6/8ths such as the Clauss and Torreys.

Ah, you see, it's not as simple of a game as that. You have to read into the history of them, as many of the brands started out as import razors from Germany and Sheffield. Many (such as myself) are hesitant to name names to avoid hype and prices going into ridiculous territory. Personally, I like being able to buy a nice American razor in good condition for $50 (or even less at times).

Worchester Razor is another good US brand along with Torrey and Clauss as I have had razors by them in the past. Still haven't gotten my hands on a Case or Genco yet but those are also highly regarded.

Most of them I have found are local finds and tend to be reasonably priced ( 5 to 25 dollars ) so check the local antique stores as well.

Haven't found one that wasn't good yet. And especially since they are so reasonable in cost.

I have a case wedge that was my favorite shaver before I dulled it removing pitting. now it's my favorite dull razor :) I'm always on the lookout for gencos, cases, torreys and clauss,' but you must forget all of that so they stay (relatively) cheap

Gillettes are made right there in Boston.

Maybe that's why you left town?:001_tongu

To the original poster:

You will most likely find that most any vintage razor you purchase will be a fine shaver once properly honed. Brand really has little to do with performance. You are looking for a sharp piece of steel to sever your whiskers, it is the simplest of tools. Even those cheap, made in China, Gold Dollars will make quick work of your whiskers.

Much of the draw of fine razors is their aesthetic, which does relate to manufacturer, and certain types of steel do have a certain "feel" to them, but that is personal preference and is much akin to fine wine tasting in that you must develop your palate by sampling many different varieties.

Buy any and all razors that strikes your fancy. Razors from the US, Sheffield, Sweden, France, Japan, Solingen, Spain, China......anywhere but Pakistan really.

Hey, I have the shame of going to the same school as William Nickerson, the inventor of the disposal safety blade and cofounder of Gillette. But no, that's not why I left. :tongue_sm

+1 My Hart Steel razor is a wonderful razor.I wrote Hart Steel an e-mail telling them how much I apprecate the razor and I asked if there could possibly be a different style or grind coming out and they responded saying that they are going to come out with some different styles at the end of the year.
