View Full Version : Wee Scot Roadshow

I've decided to finally give (almost) everyone the chance to try the magnificent Wee Scot. This will be your standard shave, shave, pass event.
Because I'm a poor college student and the $35 it costs to replace a Wee Scot isn't exactly nothing to me, I have decided to place some restrictions on participants.
1. Minimum 1 year membership
2. Minimum 500 posts
3. US and Canada only. Sorry everyone else, shipping is a pain.
4. No more than 20 contestants
I might lower them if I'm not getting any takers.
If you meet the first two requirements, go ahead and put your name down, first come first serve.
Keep the brush for a week or so, give it a try with soaps and/or creams.
Pass it on to the next guy.
Simple!

Wee scots are a fun little brush. Too small for me, but if you're a small brush guy, they're about as good as they come. I actually reknotted a vintage 14mm turnback, and failing to find anything else in that size worth using, I was forced to butcher a Wee for its head.

After lusting after one for the last year, I just bought a Wee Scot myself. Great little brush. This is an awesome idea!
While I'm waiting to get one, I'll keep myself occupied by shaving with a single hair that shed from another brush.
Should be good practice for the wee scot.

I am just 2 months short of a year myself so if you change the rules I would like to try it. I will be out of town until about June 5 though. so if I am permitted to join in I can do it anytime after that.

If you find the Wee too small, look at the Special. It's about the same size as the berkeley but doesn't really bloom, so it feels smaller and denser on the face.

I was going to suggest the same thing. Despite trying about half of Simpsons range, my three keepers right now are the Wee Scot, the Special, and the Berkeley.

I had one once and let it go. A Duke 1. It's about between the Special and Berkeley, and I top out at 20mm so it just isn't worth having.
Doesn't mean I'm not tempted again though...

Good luck, gents...the Wee Scot is a beautiful brush for sure! I'm so sure that I think after you shave with your Roadshow brush, you will beg, borrow or steal your way into a Wee Scot...Remember that West Coast Shaving has a B&B code BANDB that will save some serious money on you very own Wee Scot brush!
Good luck to all of you!

I'd be interested in giving it a whirl. A Simpson's Case was my second brush. After getting that one, my other brush saw no use. I've since picked up an Emperor 1 and 2 that I use more frequently than the case, but I've been quite curious to try the Wee Scot. Count me in if there's still space. So...
I think I'm going to keep the 9 guys who currently meet the requirements and tack Noahpictures on the end for a total of 10. While he hasn't been here a year yet, if everyone keeps the brush a week he will meet the guideline when It comes to him.
If the 10 person pass goes well, maybe I will go ahead and run another round at the beginning of the winter season. Oooohhh... or maybe a PIF when I graduate in December...
Either way, we are going to take 10 people and run with it.
Because I'm busy trying to get ready to drive home to see the parents (little over 600 miles) and the Orchestrion happens to live in the same state my parents do and is busy with finals through today, I think I will drop the brush in the mail there.

Sorry I've been late to update, gentlemen. It was an insanely busy week. The brush arrived on Wednesday. I was stunned at how small the brush actually is! It's barely longer than my pinky finger.
I gave it a spin Wednesday night. I wasn't really impressed with the QCS sample that Drew provided (thumbs up to Drew), but that's beside the point. It's pretty darn fun to use this little guy. I figure I'll use it a few more times this week and then send it on with another sample or two thrown in.

06-05-2011, 04:48 PM
Hmm...
The Special is an awesome brush. The only problem I had with mine was the crazily uneven knot. The higher end 18mm Simpsons simply can't compare to the Savile Row.
The possible exception(s) is(are) the 55/56. The only issue I had with the 55 was lather hogging. Simply far too dense for my taste.

That one was one of the densest little brushes I've ever seen. I'm not surprised. The knot was set at ~39 mm which is quite frankly absurd for that dense of a brush.

Fantastic idea! I'm glad many are using the WS more than once as I believe there is a learning curve to surmount before you see the benefits of the Scot. Try it with hard/soft soaps and creams alike. I particularly like face lathering with mine.

Second shave with the Wee Scot, this time with Salter Fresh Mint cream. My love for the knot may yet override my dislike for the small handle. My wife says it's cute and thinks I should order one. Here's a pic with the WS in bloom and the (as yet) unused B&B LE #14/75.

My wife says it's cute and thinks I should order one.
That sounds very familiar. I recently picked up a vintage butterscotch Wee Scot and the first thing my wife said was that it was cute. The knot is bad and I've been waiting to send it to the folks at Simpson's for a re-knot until the one on the road show makes it my way so that I can decide if I want to pay to re-knot it. Thanks for the comparison photos and updates, Brian!

If I had a vintage WS I would definitely have it re-knotted. It's a great knot if you can deal with the teeny handle.

The tiny handle is exactly what has made me hesitate. When I enquired about getting it re-knotted, it was going to end up costing about the same as a new one once shipping was factored in both ways. So, I've just been a bit hesitant until I get a chance to try one.

The Wee Scot should be headed out to California (goby) tomorrow. Had my 3rd shave with it tonight using Salter's Wild Rose (I'm on a Salter kick lately). I also did a Cella face lather on one of the days I didn't shave. I still like the knot and while the handle is absurdly small, I didn't seem to notice it as much tonight. Since my wife said she was sorry to see the "Smurf brush" (as she calls it) leave, I might just ask her to get me one for my birthday in August. Thanks again to Drew (Dpflaum) for passing it around.
This is such a great show. Well done Drew for making it possible. You have all inspired me enough to use my Wee Scot this morning.

The worst thing about this traveling brush is that I don't get to use it while it's out!
I will admit that the handle does take a little getting used to, particularly if you are used to something in the 22mm range or higher. But your wallet will love both the price of the brush and the tiny amount of cream it takes to run it.

As far as I know, WCS has the best price, but he is frequently out of stock. Maybe we could arrange a group buy?
I can contact Mark at Simpsons and see if he'll go for it, we'd probably need 20+ to get a better deal.

This is such a great idea. Can't hardly wait.
dpm802 should receive the Wee Scot today.
You will not be prepared to deal with how small it is. It will freak you out!!! It is small!!!
This was my first Simpson, and it oozed quality. Wow!!! This is no toy!!!
But it's way too small for me. The one thing I loved is using it for Nancy Boy Signature. NB is an expensive cream, that needs a lot of product. I loved how little I need to generate lather.
I won't be getting a Wee Scot, but I'd love to have a regular size Simpson. Now I get the fascination. :)

Had my first shave with the WS this afternoon ... Put on some Jason 6n1 Beard Therapy as a pre-shave, then let the WS tear into a chunk of Cade that I held in the palm of my hand. I loaded it for about a minute, and started working up the lather in my palm, and put on the final touches with face-lathering.
The brush really surprised me with its performance ... it held more than enough lather for 3 passes, and I could probably have done 3 more with what I squeezed out of it when I cleaned it up. Although the knot had been packed down a bit during shipping, after I was done, it bloomed out into a huge diameter that appears to be almost as wide as the brush is tall.
At no time did I feel the brush was too small to be practical. In fact, when its splayed out, it covers plenty of area, and felt just great as it worked the lather into my whiskers.
I still need to experiment with the handle to find the sweet-spot on how to hold it. Its not that I had any difficulty keeping a grip on it, but I think there's probably a better way that will feel more ergonomic.
Who is the next one in line? Send me a PM with your address, and I'll probably get it out to you early next week. I'm waiting on delivery of an item I want to include in the box.

Glad to see so many of you guys picking up Wee Scots on your own! It is one thing to hear people rave about how great it is, but it is another thing all together to see skeptics admitting they love the WS.I was never skeptical ... I know that the WS has been honored with rave reviews from those that have one.
However, I admit that I was blown away by just how good it really is. I have been pretty much a Boar user since January, but the WS is the first Badger I've used in a long time that really knocked my socks off. Small in size, but HUGE on performance. It holds a lot of water, and that makes a lot of lather ... more than enough for 3 passes. It would probably do 6 passes if I stretched it a little.
The only thing I wish I could change is people's perceptions. Most seem to think of it as "just a travel brush." Its much, much more than that, and it would do just fine as a daily go-to at home in anybody's den.
I expect to get it out in the mail on Tuesday. I'm waiting on Montecristo #2's address and one item I want to include in the package.

The WeeScot is back on the road again. ETA is Thursday, 08/04/11.
It picked up a little traveling companion, too. I had an Omega Bambino (http://www.shoeboxshaveshop.com/omega-50068-quotbambin50068.html) arrive at my house roughly the same time, and the two just look so cute sitting next to each other, I hated to split them up. So now, those downstream can compare the mighty WeeScot Badger along with a similarly sized Boar brush, too.
I also added pill bottles for the two brushes, but I neglected to drill vent holes. Maybe the next person can take care of this little detail.

I've been checking out these great brushes for a week or so and am ready to ship them to the next guy on the list (Brian, PM sent). While I enjoyed both, I do prefer badger, so the Wee Scot wins out. I initially thought of the WS as a smaller Berkeley 46, but I was wrong. It is better described as a smaller Duke. Fantastic with either soaps or creams, a pleasure to use. Put me on the list of want to buy. Oh and by the way, I guess I was prepared for the size (or lack of), because the brush did shock me, as some have described. Don't get me wrong, I don't believe I would want a smaller shaving brush than the Wee Scot.

The brushes came in today! I'm really looking forward to trying these over the next couple days. The Bambino will be my first time using a boar brush. So, I'm looking forward to that. And sometime after signing up for the Wee Scot Roadshow, I bid on an auction for a brush that I was pretty sure was a vintage Simpson, but I didn't know for sure which one it was. When it came in, it was a Wee Scot that had a bad knot. Since that time, I've been looking forward to trying out a current production one so that I can determine whether the handle will be too small for me to comfortably use. So, the test for me: Will I re-knot the vintage one?
My first impression ... Unlike most people, I'm somewhat surprised at how big it is. As I acquired the vintage Wee Scot before this one came, I was prepared for it to be small. But the current production Wee Scot is actually a few millimeters taller than the vintage one that I have. The bottom end below the ridge is identical in height on the two models, but the top portion is slightly taller on the current model. So, I was surprised that the current model is bigger.
The testing commences ...
And some pictures to show that the brushes are still doing well ...

@Brian - Keep in mind, I don't think that Bambino is fully broken in yet. I only used it once, and the guy I got it from only used it a few times before that and he switched to something else. Don't judge all boar brushes by this one example. And try and give it several wet/dry cycles while you have it, so it gets more bristle-splitting done in the next few days.

We had been kicking around the idea of a WS Group Buy, and it seemed to have fizzled out. I went and picked up the ball and e-Mailed beginish, the Mod of the Shaving Brush forum, to ask about the policies and procedures to organize a Group Buy. He had some questions about the rationale for having a Group Buy for a commonly stocked product. So I guess we can just drop the idea, unless someone can think of a way to make this WSGB "special and unique."
PS: In the meantime, I picked up a used one on the BST, but if a Group Buy comes down the pike, I'd probably get another, so I have one to use and one that's NIB for the collection.
beginish
09-02-2011, 07:37 PM
To be clear, a Group Buy does not have to be "special and unique", but there should be be a very good reason to do so. Why? They typically involve the transfer of a fair amount of money to a member here, who will coordinate ordering and communications with both the supplier and the membership, deal with any customs issues for an international buy (which this would be), and then ship the product to the members. Sometimes a vendor will coordinate the ordering and the shipping, but in the case of a commonly stocked item like the Wee Scot, it is very unlikely that a vendor would undercut their own sales and profits. So based on the response above, I can only assume that this is just a bulk order of the standard stock, and not something like a novel handle material, different hair grade, etc. If not, just send me a PM.

Thanks, Drew, for the opportunity to try the Wee Scot and thanks to DPM802 for the inclusion of the Bambino. The brushes are on their way to ironbrewer as of this morning.
Both brushes performed very well. I still haven't decided whether I'll be sending my vintage Wee Scot back to Simpson for a re-knot so that it could be put back into service. The current production Wee Scot performed very well, which wasn't too surprising to me as I have several Simpson brushes and really like the Best grade of hair. My only wondering and concern was the size of the handle. I found it easier to use than I thought it was going to be, but I still haven't decided whether I'd enjoy using it on a regular basis. At this point, I'm strongly leaning towards getting it re-knotted, and I'm even thinking about getting the three-band Super grade of hair in it. I think I'll wait to see whether I miss it and let that be the determining factor ... We'll see ...
That is a wonderful line up of small brushes.
Is your butterscotch Wee Scot the notorious #1?
Wim
Thanks! I don't know if the one I have is the Wee Scot #1. I thought the #1 was even smaller, but I can't seem to find any pictures of the two next to each other.

It definitely got better, but it still has some breaking in to go. I think I was most surprised by the difference in the feel between when it was wet and dry. It softened up a lot just by getting wet, which I'm accustomed to with some two-band badger brushes I have, but the difference was much more pronounced. In any event, I think I'd like to try another boar in the future.

I put it to work last night with Tabac soap in the shower. It had been a good month or so in storage, and my first shave with the WS brought it right back.

I also have a Semogue Custom 2010, a NIB C&E Boar and several of my grandfather's old brushes (all NOS condition) that are out at my storage locker.

I have that same shave mug!
I've been following this thread for a while now. I might have to get one of these despite my reservations that it would be too small.
I sold the Seaforth mug and I already regret it.
Me too! Mine has a nice puck of Seaforth soap in it too!
How is the Seaforth soap?

Wow you have gone boar! Is there reason for not using the other brushes in the storage locker? I would be very tempted.

Wow you have gone boar! Is there reason for not using the other brushes in the storage locker? I would be very tempted.the reason I have the storage locker is that I'm very cramped on space in my present location (I'm renting a room in an old victorian house.) I have a private bathroom, but it is short on storage space. And I need to keep a small footprint so that when I get ready to move someplace else, I want to be able to pick up my stuff and get out of here in just one car trip, if I can.
Yes, I've gone Boar. It started in January with my 1305, and I've bought 8 brushes so far this year, 6 of 'em were Boars.
The more I use 'em the more convinced I am that Boar/Face-lather is the way to go for me. The advantages of doing it this way are many-fold, and I'm kicking myself for the 3 years of wet-shaving where I was using Badger and Bowl, and not getting everything I could out of each shave.

^ So what are the advantages of using boar over badger for you?

I really like it. It compares very well to the vintage Williams that I have. I took a little while to get it re-hydrated and the bit on crust off the top.

It ended a while back. I was the last member on the list.
