We are happy to announce the release of our hard shaving soap. Tallow is the first ingredient. Our shaving soap also contains many other ingredients loved by wet shavers, such as shea butter, cocoa butter, and lanolin. We are currently offering it in five scents: Cayman, Key Lime, Lavender, Vostok, and a limited edition Green Irish Tweed type. The first four are scented with only essential oils, while the Green Irish Tweed type is scented with fragrance oil. You have the choice of purchasing the shaving soap in a wooden bowl or in refill form.
We are also offering a limited time Green Irish Tweed type shaving cream.
In our hand and body soap assortment, we now have a Vostok hand and body soap available. Like the shaving cream and soap, it contains menthol. We also have a few other scents that are perfect for the upcoming warmer days: Eucalyptus Spearmint (http://www.queencharlottesoaps.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=11_13&products_id=103), Ocean Waves (http://www.queencharlottesoaps.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=11_13&products_id=104), Pink Grapefruit (http://www.queencharlottesoaps.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=11_13&products_id=106), and Pomegranate (http://www.queencharlottesoaps.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=11_13&products_id=105). All of these qualify for our four soaps for $15 deal (http://www.queencharlottesoaps.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=11_13&products_id=52).
To show you our appreciation for your business, we have a discount for you. Please use the discount code “bandb11” (without the quotations) to receive 5% off of your order. The discount code can be used unlimited times and is good until the end of the year.

Just a question, Matt. How would you compare your soap to the creams? I was all ready to buy a tub of cream, but I am interested in the differences. Is the fragrance more subdued (as most soaps seem to be when compared with same-scented creams) or is it just as potent? Performance-wise, not saying one is better than the other, but what are the differences between the two?
Thanks for any info. Looking forward to placing another order soon.
(BTW, maybe I missed it, but any info on the AS experiment?)

I bought two tubs of cream and some samples at 9:13. Literally the minute after you announced this. I wish I had picked up some soap :crying:
I wonder if I could modify my order? Maybe swap some GIT cream for soap? I know it would cost a few extra dollars to add the bowl, but I want it!

Performance-wise, I would say the cream and soap are fairly close. The lather from the cream is more dense and rich, but the lather from the soap is slicker. Scent-wise, I think the soap is on the stronger side of the scent spectrum when compared to other non-melt-and-pour soaps, but subdued when compared to our shaving cream, but only slightly (my opinion). Generally, creams provide more cushion, while soaps provide more slickness, but I believe the cream vs. soap thing comes down to preference. Some prefer creams, some prefer soaps.
The aftershaves look good. We are now working on perfecting the scents. Unfortunately, I do not have a release time frame or date.

We used to sell an unscented version of the shaving cream, but there was almost no demand for it. If you would like an unscented version of either cream or soap, we could always discuss a custom order. There would be no extra charge for an unscented custom order.

I recommend a vinegar rinse of one cup of lukewarm (100°F) chamomile tea and two tablespoons apple cider vinegar, whether you use my products or not. A vinegar rinse is simply good for your scalp and helps to remove anything that hair products or shampoos may have left behind.
Now, you most certainly do not have to do one. Some people like them, while some find they serve no purpose. I hope that helps.

I am about to place an order for some Cayman and/or Key Lime shaving soap.
Is there any chance that you can be persuaded to offer a tallow/lanolin soap in Sweet Almond/Marzipan/Amaretto/Cherry Almond?
I, along with many others, absolutely adore the fragrance of Sweet Almond and Marzipan and hope that you will offer something along this line.
Why let the Italians and the British enjoy a monopoly on this wonderful fragrance?
I would really like to see an American product that would rival the old Crabtree & Evelyn Sweet Almond and all those Italian soaps with the added benefit of both tallow and lanolin.
Ideally, it would be based on essential oils, if possible, and not synthetic fragrance oils.

David

That is the problem. Bitter almond essential oil has to be used in very small amounts or it causes skin irritation. I had a shaving cream scented with it, but a few commented on how it irritated their skin. I can certainly look into it some more.

I can tell you the creams are hard creams, and I lather then like I do a soap. I can only imagine the soap will be much harder but of equal performance as all of the creams I have (7 of them), perform extremely well.

Thanks for your reply regarding my inquiry as to the possibility of your offering your new tallow and lanolin soap in an amaretto/marzipan fragrance.
I understand what you mean about the bitter almond essential oil causing some users to experience skin irritation.
It makes my wonder what C&E, Cella and P.160 had in them for their fragrance. Synthetic fragrance oil? In that case, I wouldn't be put off if you had to use a synthetic; particularly with the potential negative effect of bitter almond essential oil in mind.
I really do appreciate your looking into it. If you do decide to try an amaretto/sweet almond version I would love to be able to test it, even if it means recompensing you in some manner.
Thanks again,
Davide

My order arrived last night. Couldn't decide which to dig into first because the lime cream smells so good, but I wanted to try the soap (GIT). The scent is subtle, definitely more so than any of the QCS creams I've tried, although that may be apples and oranges. I've never used the actual Creed scent, so I can't say how close the approximation is, but it is a very pleasant fragrance. Lathered up this morning, it whips up very quickly. Just a few swirls brought me plenty of lather for my two plus passes. Lather was a little thin compared to the creams, but that is probably due to the water ratio - might take a couple days to get that just right. The scent, lathered up and on my face, was sublime. Very slick shave, a little redness in the usual spot on the chin but nothing of consequence. The feel of my face after the shave was where this soap shines. Very moisturizing. Feels like I shaved with MWF, but much better smelling. Overall, very satisfied with the first crack. Once I get the lather dialed in I will do a proper review, but I can already see this becoming a mainstay in my rotation. Well done, Matt!

Price, I look forward to your review. I found that when loading my brush, it helps to start off with a slightly wet brush, as opposed to the dry brush I use when lathering the creams. YMMV of course.

Took me a couple days to find my sweet spot with your creams, which I get by shaking the brush out fairly dry as well. Most soaps I've done well starting with a very wet brush, but I think I just had too much water today. I'm far from an expert ("lathermeister"?), but once I got your creams figured out they performed like a champ. I have little doubt the soap will do the same. Congratulations again on an excellent product line, supported by superior customer service.
(Oh, and just my opinion...leave the sweet almond marzipan to the Italians, and keep doing what you're doing. They seem to have gotten that niche pretty well nailed down, and I don't know if I've got room in my cabinet for another tub.)

Speaking of the Italians, you may want to try Marco/Mantic's prescribed method of lathering with the bowl down and bristles up. I know it's an old method and I can't use it on the initial lathering of a soap because it has stuck to the bowl yet. However, Vitos and other soft soaps as well as some of my triple milled soaps really shine when I start with a wet brush, give it a light shake, swirl "upside down" until I've got a decent lather, put a couple of drops of water from the running faucet on the tips of the brush and then lather "right side up". I may be preaching to the choir here, but it keeps me from starting from that watery lather that just never seems to get any body. Those runny lathers are really nice and slick for shaving but gravity keeps them from staying on the face too long :001_smile.

On my third shave with the soap. I have found the sweet spot for lathering, as Matthew said a little more water in the brush. Today I faced lathered and it was the best so far. I have thought about writing my first review and I would put this soap on par with Tabac and DR Harris. For me that is a pretty tall order.. One thing is I like to nit pick, I was thinking short comings of this soap and then I realized I have not got weeper, nick or burn, using this soap as I usually get with the others. This soap really packs the cushion.
Next order some shampoo bars for me.

No. It is an interpretation of Green Irish Tweed by Creed.

How mentholated is the Vostok soap compared to the cream? I am looking for a good cooling soap.

"The British Empire Collection".
It would be so fantastic if you, or another saponier, would offer a shaving soap and/or bath soap based upon a Yardley -type fragrance from the late 1940's to early 1960's British Colonial era.
I am 53 years old, but I still have a very slight remembrance of the Yardley fragrance from my boyhood in The Kenya Colony, British East Africa and in Southern Rhodesia in the early Sixties.
I really do hope that you will give some consideration to recreating this sort of fragrance.
Seriously, if you can pin down the 1950's British Colonial (Yardley) fragrance you would have a winner.
To this very day, I can still remember my mother and that musky, lavender scent that she was, and still is, at Eighty years of age so very fond of. Funny, but I can still see my mother in her early Thirties! She was quite a "looker" back in the early 1960's!
I remember my mother rocking me to sleep in Africa to the tune of an old English nursery rhyme! Again, with that musky, lavender fragrance in my memory!
Warmest Regards,
David

David, I will certainly consider the Yardley fragrance. What notes does it have?

I used the soap this morning, and I think it is just as cooling, perhaps slightly less, but I cannot notice it.

Matt,
Since we're in the vein of throwing out suggestions, (and since you've recently - successfully - delved into FO scents) how about an English Fern-type soap? Since the Pen's tallow version has become pretty much the white whale around the BST, I would imagine it would sell very well. You can put my name down on the list right now.
Still loving that GIT, by the way, to the detriment of pretty much everything else in the cabinet. Any idea how long you plan on keeping it around?

+1 on the entire post. I went a little overboard and got 4 soaps on a short period of time. 3 of them sit untouched, along with the rest of the cabinet, in favor of the GIT. Hoard mode will soon engage depending upon your answer.

Oh dear, well now that the cat is out of the bag, I think the Yardley and Fern suggestions are excellent. I have one more to add: czech & speake no. 88. I'm DYING for a dark, woody rose scented soap that doesn't cost $36 and performs like the rest of QCS soaps/creams.
Hey, someone should create a new thread with a voting option titled:
"What soap/cream should Matt at QCS make next?"

Recreating a fragrance is almost impossible. Heck, even big name companies do not create their own fragrances. Most fragrances you see for sale, whether in a department store or on your favorite wet shaving website, were created by one of a handful companies that do nothing but come up with fragrances. When one of us vendors sells an interpretation of a fragrance, it is almost always created for us. Just Google "Green Irish Tweed type fragrance oil", and you will see what I mean. The trouble is, there is no English Fern type, so any fern fragrance oil could be a hit or miss.
This is why most of the scents I sell are created with only essential oils. They allow me to take natural scents, mix them, and come up with something unique (as well as offering some traditional fragrances, like lavender and lime).
If we are not offering what you want, have a look at this page (http://www.queencharlottesoaps.com/index.php?main_page=page&id=8), and then send me a PM or e-mail (http://www.queencharlottesoaps.com/index.php?main_page=page&id=8).

I am not sure. If the demand remains high, the scent may stay.

Please don't get me wrong, Matt. I'm a very satisfied customer. I just keep seeing these "WTB" & "WTT for" tallow EF posts, and since you were able to do an excellent GIT-type soap I just thought the market would be there. (I'd still buy it, whether it's an interpretation of EF or just your take - I'm sure it'd at least be complementary to the Pen's cologne.)

Just order 4 bars of body soap and GIT shaving soap. Looking forward to trying them out. I have no idea what scents you can recreate, but my wife's favorite scent, on me that is, is Russian Leather. Some creams/soaps are vaguely like that, but none are really very close. I'd snap that one up if you had it.

If you let the hand and body soaps and shampoo bars sit unused in a dry, cool place, they should last forever. Soap does not expire; it is actually like a fine wine, it gets better as it ages. As soap ages, it looses some scent, but gets harder, smoother, and gentler.
I hope that helps :001_smile

I am not sure how Russian Leather smells, but Cordovan is a leather smell (think leather briefcases and shoes).

I found a Yardley English Lavender type fragrance oil. If a current customer wants to be a guinea pig, send me a PM if you meet the following requirements:
1. You are a current customer
2. You have smelled (I spelled it correctly this time) the real Yardley English Lavender
3. You will get back to me with feedback (assuming you meet condition number one, I know where you live :wink2: :ninja:)
I will send you a free sample of shaving cream.
Thanks SCS!!!
With classes and another job, I have had to outsource my shipping department to other vendors and members. Wendy was nice about it, but that RichGem guy has been pretty uncooperative

I used the soap this morning, and I think it is just as cooling, perhaps slightly less, but I cannot notice it.
Matthew:
I don't know anything about topnotes or basenotes. However; I will give, to the best of my ability, the closest description possible as to the fragrance of Yardley Lavender that I experienced as a child in British East Africa and Southern Rhodesia in the early 1960's.
So, prepare your mind for the following:
Think of and picture a broad field of English lavender under the sun of an eighty-degree Fahrenheidt day. Notice the sharp, but clean fragrance?
Then, think about a sudden warm, Sub-Saharan tropical shower (a gentle shower, not a tornadic storm) lasting for a few hours.
The shower has ended and the sun is beaming on the horizon just prior to dusk. The formerly sharp English lavender fragrance has now taken on, pardon the expression, a note of slight rot and decay that is a unique blend with floral fragrances found in Southern Africa. Hence, that "muskiness" combined with the Yardley Lavender fragrance produced an aroma that was, to my limited knowledge, unique to the British colonies of Southern Africa.
Or, to the Deep South of the United States.
That, dear Sir, is the Yardley fragrance that I associate with my English mother as a British Colonial child prior to emigrating to the U.S. in late 1963/early1964.
I would imagine that a similar olfactory experience might have been enjoyed by any other British child growing up in places such as The Crown Colony of Hong Kong or The Straits Settlements (Malaysia and Singapore) with similar heat and humidity.
Please keep in mid that a British child growing up in the Trucial States, in Yemen/Aden or any other colonies and protectorates on the Arabian Peninsula might have had a different experience with Yardley than I did, due to the drier climate. I suppose that the drier climate might have greatly diminished the Yardley fragrance. Then again, I wasn't there, so I can't really speak with any authority in that regard.
I really do hope that my description was of some help and inspiration to you.
Warmest Regards,
David

So I have been using my new puck of GIT and so far I love the scent but cannot get he performance of it up the creams I normally get from QCS. Any recommendations on what I can do to help this? It is my first hard tallow soap and I know it will produce nice later, I can get that, just does not have the purported slickness I keep hearing about, actually I get quite the opposite. It is a good thing I have Proraso AS splash, it has kept my face in good shape from the otherwise OK shaves I have been getting with it. Please help, I love the scent for summer and want to use it often but can't get it right!!!!

Same here. If it feels too "sticky" barely wet the tips and keeping lathering. I keep adding no more than a drop or two and directly face lather at that point. In the beginning, I used a puck of Tabac to make some lather on my face that I knew was too thick. I kept adding a few drops of water and swirling on my face until I found the point where it was perfect. I went beyond that just to see what a runny mess it would make if I overhydrated. That mock run helped me quickly diagnose issues in the future with tallow soaps.

I finally cracked open the Vostok and I have to say it gave me a great shave; the lather was super slick and whipped up quickly. I did have to add more water than when I use Tabac but it was without question a fine shave. The cooling effect was great and lasted longer than an AS usually does.
I will enjoy this soap during this hot season that has already begun and sprang up overnight...

I received my order of the GIT cream, key lime soap, lavender shampoo bar, and rose bath soap last week.
The wife loves the rose bath soap, and I must admit it's extremely moisturizing without being oily. I love the shampoo bar.
Both are of a much higher quality than any soaps I've ever used before. Rich and nourishing. We will be ordering more for sure.
The shaving soap and cream I don't have an opinion on just yet, as I've a new brush that isn't broken in. Even Cella is being difficult.
I can say that the soap has that awesome tallow cushion and thickness. The cream is really slick and promising as well. I'm just too stubborn to use one of my tried and true brushes just yet.
