Good morning. My wife and I got up early to watch the royal wedding. It was a nice ceremony and all went well. I was struck by how much more comfortable Kate looked than years ago when Diana and Charles were married. It may seem a bit much to some people but frankly, I like the tradition and history of the whole affair. The music, the dress of the guests, the attire of the princes, the majesty of Westminster Abbey, all of it. And it seems as if the English people are genuinely happy with the marriage. Well done Prince William and Kate. I hope you have a truly happy and peaceful marriage. And congratulations to the people of England.

For me, my thoughts and emotions about the wedding all came together as I saw Bear Grylls in the crowd of revelers, dressed in a Cub Scout uniform.

Just watched the entire ceremony (4 hours!). Really breathtaking! I become jealous that I am not British.
As a musician, I must admit that music during the ceremony was chosen exceptionally well. However nothing can beat "Jerusalem" - it is and will be a hit.

I am not a big fan of the monarchy but you have to hand it to the Brits. No other nation on earth can match the history, pomp and ceremony of a British State occasion. An amazing spectacle.

But I genuinely wish them the best! Any family that has the admiration of an entire Kingdom has to be a pretty good family! :thumbup1:

My thoughts exactly...I wish the couple well, but they are no better than anyone else. Americans decided way back then that royalty meant nothing, and I think they were right.

Why is it in poor taste? If not for these people who are getting married today and their ancestors, my family would probably be living happily in rural Ireland. Or at least they would have immigrated of their own free will. I find it hard to be anything other than appalled at the attention given to the feckless scion of a bankrupt monarchy when he decides to take a wife.

Surprised how a thread wishing 'good luck' has descended into some kind of rant against Monarchy/Britain.
And, whilst not wishing to offend any American's on here, posting the Declaration of Independence, with the 'all men are created equal' line, the same week as your BLACK President had to just prove he was in fact an American, seems a tad ironic.
The Declaration of Independence is either a really bad joke or a set of ideals light years ahead of its time. The jury is still out.
And no, I'm not anti American in case anyone was wondering. My Great Grandfather emigrated from New Boston in the 19th century to Swansea, during the Copper boom. And by Irish American standards, that makes me a fully fledged 'Yank'.

I'm not saying we should be bitter because they are rude and hateful towards American society, I couldn't care less, I'm just pointing that fact out for the anglophiles who may not understand it.

I don't have any interest in this for/against debate, but I used to live in the UK and never experienced anything like what you are talking about. Do you have some inside knowledge that you could share with us?

thread was hijacked unfortunately. I have traveled a lot the gritty way (backpack and hostels) and there are a lot of Brits doing the same thing, they are my reference point. Most of them were fine folks, but there's a sizable portion that just couldn't shut up about American obesity/stupidity/ignorance/politics, and constantly interrogate any Americans they met. It made an impact on me because in my experience people who travel like that are some of the most open minded I've come across, I met less prejudiced Russians.

Good morning. My wife and I got up early to watch the royal wedding. It was a nice ceremony and all went well. I was struck by how much more comfortable Kate looked than years ago when Diana and Charles were married. It may seem a bit much to some people but frankly, I like the tradition and history of the whole affair. The music, the dress of the guests, the attire of the princes, the majesty of Westminster Abbey, all of it. And it seems as if the English people are genuinely happy with the marriage. Well done Prince William and Kate. I hope you have a truly happy and peaceful marriage. And congratulations to the people of England.

I doubt it will. All comments and joking about the royals aside, I have a feeling Charles, if not the rest of them, learned his lesson from that debacle and wouldn't permit his son get strong armed into a similar situation.

That my friend is the legacy/curse of George W. Bush. He did a lot of damage, plus an illegal War didn't help... We Brits aren't too keen on God neither, so a President who openly talked about his faith was like a red rag to a bull.
Point is, Britain and America have a strange relationship, going back years. We should be best of friends, but there's a always a suspicion on both sides that the other one is up to no good, especially as you lot cheated on us with the French!!

I backpacked too and ran across the same thing a few times. That was around twenty years ago so maybe something changed since then. I didn't get any of that when I lived there later though, but it probably had more to do with the crowd that I was with. But you're always going to get that in some form where ever you go. I just brush it off and move on. There's unhappy people everywhere, you know, who can't wait to complain about the latest cause du jour, and if it wasn't about the US it would be something else, like taking the tallow out of soap.

Not everyone on here is from the USA. It may surprise you to hear that there are literally hundreds of nations in the world that aren't America.
While I acknowedge that most members here are from the US and that there are historical reasons why many Americans dislike the British monarchy, there are also some of us who live in the UK or Commonwealth countries. For us, whether we like it or not, the Queen is our head of state and the royal family are part of our history.
No one could argue that the USA is the most powerful country on earth, but it would be respectful if you let those of us from 'lesser' nations enjoy and embrace our own history and culture.

I am not a big fan of the monarchy but you have to hand it to the Brits. No other nation on earth can match the history, pomp and ceremony of a British State occasion. An amazing spectacle.

Whilst my interest in the wedding was very low I do think it is a shame that a thread started with manifest good intention has been hijacked.

First of all, I am not a child as your first post seems to imply, and being an adult, I am not interested in having internet fights.
Second of all I've already explained myself, but here you go: I've traveled and met lots of people from lots of countries, and only the Commonwealth boys felt it necessary to explain my own country to me with no shortage of hostility. I met more open minded Russians, who actually understand the difference between a country's citizens and it's government. Consume some of your own media, Americans are your universal punchline
