View Full Version : Expiration at the Institute

Good evening gentlemen.

Most of my soaps have a shelf life of 12 months, which I took to mean forever: Cella, Arko, Proraso, Harris, and even RSC cream. Tabac is 36 months, which should be even more forever, and then MWF, Speick and Williams have no such marking, so they will preserve eternally.

Now, that being said, the Institut Karité I just received is supposed to last only 3 months. For a hard triple milled soap. Considering the considerable discreptancy, should I take this one expiration date seriously? Is it because the butter goes rancid? Have any of you had any problem with this soap or any other with such a short (alledged) shelf life?

Thanks.

sounds like a dodgy marketing issue. The shae butter has been saponified so i don't see how it could go rancid!!

No, I have a puck of IK that I have been using for 5 months now with no letup in performance. It sounds strange that at 3 months, it would go bad.

I've had a puck of IK for about 2 years now, and I got it slightly used on B/S/T, so I don't really know how old it is. I used it this morning and it was just fine. Just enjoy it and don't worry about the so-called expiration date!

Probably true that it's a marketing issue, but I also would venture a guess that not all of the shea butter has been saponfied; i.e., I think they add extra unsaponified shea butter into it for moisturizing properties.

Still highly doubt it goes bad in three months!

Unsure about the expiration date issue. Currently using IK which is going on 2 years.

Lathers excellently and quickly with an Omega 49 boar. Better performer than other highly acclaimed soaps.

I never worry about hard soaps and not much about soft ones. Creams seem to last a good while as long as they are kept cool and unopened. I have been using some cans of Barbarsol I bought over 10 years ago and they still work just fine.
