I'm definitely in. Since we're still in the planning stages I may as well throw this out there: Anybody interested in stopping by Boulevard as part of the meet-up? For that matter I would be I interested in checking out any other breweries or tobacconists anybody knows about. Maybe we can even round out the day with some KC BBQ.
Of course you local guys may not new into the more "tourist" type stuff. But maybe one of you might point those from out of town in the right direction.

It may be to early to say, but are we possibly gonna shoot for a weekend? For me a Saturday would be the best chance of me being able to make it. I assume this might be the case for most.

If some aren't interested in the Blvd tour that's fine. We could always take an early or later tour and have the main "meetup" before or after. Party size is limited to 8, witch may or may not be a problem.
Info from the site:
Boulevard currently offers public tours at the following times from May 28th- September 4th.
Wednesday — 3 pm
Thursday — 1 pm, 3 pm
Friday — 11am, 1 pm, 3 pm
Saturday — 10 am, 11 am, 12 pm, 1 pm, 2 pm, 3 pm, 4 pm
Sunday — 12pm, 1 pm, 2pm, 3pm
The Brewery is closed the following days.
July 22 Plant Meeting
Overall Saturday would probably be the best day to meet. The tour has many more time-slots that day, many places might close fairly early on Sunday. Plus we are the least likely to conflict with work or religious obligations on Saturday. I am fine with, as some suggested, meeting at a coffeehouse or diner, but one of the mentioned cigar/shave stores would be my preference.
And thank you KcHighLife, I agree, let's get the ball rolling! :thumbup1:

Hello Guys,
I have put together or helped put together about 5 Wet Shaving Razor Meets. The first thing to be done is to set a Date, Place & time. Otherwise, nothing is ever decided. Don't ask, just do it. Then search the Member list for guys in the area and send them both a PM and an email if they have entered one (Email is the most effective). Start small and expect 10-20 guys to show up.
Hope this helps, :001_smile

Sending a PM to a person and inviting them to an event, no charge, where honing, stropping, beard prep, shaving technique etc are demonstrated and taught etc...... is regarded as Spam?

How do you define sending unsolicited messages to people you don't know?
Yes, that's spam. Regardless of the topic.
We have a forum to announce get togethers just for such a reason. While there may be some who appreciate the additional information, most don't.
EDIT: Let me clarify that there is obviously a HUGE difference between sending an e-mail or a PM to someone you are friendly with on this forum and

No, I don't see a smiley face on yours and you did not see one on mine.
Lets get this straight right now. I have never sent any such emails to members of B&B because when I first inquired if it would be ok, several years ago, Joel informed me that it was not. Because of that I have refrained from inviting the members of B&B to the events that I, me, Randy Tuttle, sponsor and do the work of organizing. BTW, My events are open to members of all forums
My prior post was simply to inform people who were thinking of organizing an event of methods that are necessary for success.
It is unfortunate that you have jumped the gun to such a huge extent and read into my post something that never happened nor was even hinted at.
Calm down.

I'm in KC and walked through the plaza today.
There's an Art of Shaving brick and mortar.
I thought Diebels was the only place in these parts.
I'm only here until Tuesday though and have zero personal time.
Gotta love the opulence and decadence of this place.

It's definitely not as refined and charming as it used to be. As contrived and out of place as the architecture is, it's been around long enough to not feel as artificial as a Las Vegas or Disneyland.. the surrounding architecture also borrows elements from the Plaza, making it feel a bit more genuine to me. I don't feel that it's shallow and superficial, but I understand the impression.. constructions like this used to pop up in a matter of months (go check out Zona Rosa up by MCI airport or The Legends up a bit farther) and still do all over the developing world.
Forever XXI is a sign of the decline of the Plaza.. I hope the day never comes when all the local and boutique shops are ousted to make room for Starbucks and the Gap.

My misunderstanding.. I thought you were talking about the Plaza, and I'm probably a little too eager to jump to the defence of KC nowadays since there are so many inaccurate stigmas associated with the midwest.
Personally, I'd love to see Diebel's up their game against Art of Shaving.. I bet if they started carrying more wetshaving gear, like a larger selection of DE blades, soaps, aftershaves, we wouldn't need to schedule KC get togethers.. all you'd have to do is head over to Diebel's.

I went into the AOS store and had a little chat with the man inside. He had a vest and tie on and looked like he may be in place next to the barber chair prominently displayed in the front window.
The air of nostalgia ended quickly when I chatted him up. He was quick to show me the new seaweed line of products and gave me some samples. He showed me some brushes and even let me play around with the Power brush they have for sale. It only shakes. No swirl or spin. It only shakes like their razors do when you turn it on. An odd and puzzling addition to badger brush.
Then he showed me some cartridge razors with varying degrees of opulent handles. When I asked about double edge razors he directed my attention to some Merkur razors. All nicely displayed and seriously over priced. I pointed at the VISION and he excitedly pulled it out to show how it opens and closes. He started to tell me how it was Titanium. (it's plated zamak- we all saw so on How it's Made..) I didn't argue the details since he had a glimmer of excitement in his eye. Especially when he told me that an item could be mine for the princely sum of $220 or so.. Just the VISION, no stand of accessories. I sighed, and asked what kind of blades to use it such a razor.
He showed me a small drawer with a glass lid that had three packs of double edge blades. Merkur and two Gillette branded blades. I didn't look closely as he continued to spew pricing and told me the Merkur blades were such a great deal compared to Fusion carts at $15 for a ten pack and the Gillette DE blades, which I think were Russian packs, were available for $10 per pack.
I politely thanked him for showing me around the very small shop. It was about the size of my living room. As I turned to leave he stopped me to look at the AOS starter kit that they had in a leather travel case. He surely thought I'd see the value it that. "The brush," he said with enthusiasm, "it is the travel size that costs $60 over here, but comes for free with the little travel set that costs $75." I said, "that's nice."
I bought an AOS starter set last Christmas online, without a leather pouch, for $25 for my brother. The brush is badger, but it is one of the smallest brushes that could possibly be practical for shaving.
Again I thanked him for the samples and strolled across the street to have lunch at Houston's.
I was surprised by the barber chair and the wide variety of creams, lotions, and cartridge handles on display. The store was clean and well kept with a sink and various products and brushes out for smelling and test lathering. I was most surprised by the clerks total lack of perspective and understanding of the different grades of brushes and the relative prices of the DE gear.
The fact that he claimed the Merkur VISION was Titanium was enough to remind me that I was not in an actual shaving gear store. I was in a branded re-education center that had Fusion and Mach III prominently displayed all around.
The soaps are very nice and the wide range of options is nice. There seems to be a disconnect though to sell Power Cartridge handles to be used with them.
I did ask if any of the beautiful, and they really were very nice, handles were available with Sensor or Atra heads. He held back a giggle and with a little smirk told me that those products are not really used any more and were not for sale.
The had straights and shavettes as well. I saw some strops and very nice DOPP kits. Alas, I did not see much I could afford, and saw nothing I could not live without.
Like every store I visited, the salesman was very cordial and happy to help.
At Diebl's I was happy to see they had plenty of soaps and creams available. A somewhat limited selection compared to any online vendor, but they did have Edwin Jagger products and others that I found familiar. Their selection of DE razors and other hardware is limited and priced above what it is available for online as well, but not to the extent that the AOS store had priced everything to a premium.
The guy I was with at Diebel's picked up some Sea Buckthorn and a few cigars. I just enjoyed strolling around and looking at the pens and pipes they have.
I did have one regret. I didn't make it to Arthur Bryant's while I was in KC...

I come up there every once and a while. Usually to go to a race or a car show. I would be fine with whatever you local members come up with. I would hate to come up with an idea and not be able to make it, for whatever reason. Plus, I figure you locals would have better ideas anyway.
I will keep my eye on this thread and hopefully I can make it.

Well I live on the North side of the city. My thoughts were to do something more central like Power and Light District, Plaza, etc for ease of all. We are not big "late nighters" so for us, something either during the day or evening works better. I think this would make for better socializing anyway. Maybe we grab a burger and a drink at McFadden's? Hang out for a while and be done with it or would anyone be more interested in something that takes more time like a tour of Boulevard and then BBQ?

I'm on the south side of 435 in OP. I'd be up for about anything. BBQ is always good. Would it be good to have a venue where we could do some show-and-tell or something like that?

It's always fun when things get out of hand.
I just scanned the posts in this thread. If it weren't for this one (http://I don't think there is anything wrong with starting out with a superior brush. If I'd had a way of knowing what brush I'd end up liking best, I'd have bought two or three of those at the outset of my DE shaving adventure and been done. It wasn't that I couldn't afford to pay for whatever might be best. One problem, of course, was that I didn't have the experience to identify what that brush might be for me. But the true obstacle in my case was that I disbelieved a brush that cost more than around $100 would do the job (i.e., make lather, spread lather on face) appreciably better than my $70 Style 3 Size 1 Rooney in Super Silvertip, that is given the size of my head. Razor selection, on the other hand, impressed me as having a very significant bearing on shave quality and enjoyment, so I went about acquiring vintage Gillettes with the zeal and urgency of Noah after God tapped him to fill the Arc. In fact, the only reason I bought a second badger brush last April was so that I could keep one at home and one in the apartment I had in another city I was commuting to at the time. And that purchase resulted from happenstance, not any foreminded purpose. I had arranged a rendezvous with a fellow B&B member in an abandoned, suburban strip-mall parking lot to transact a BST deal for a razor, and he slyly brought along an M&F Blonde Badger brush (with a natural horn handle) that also appeared in his BST listing. The seller and his fiancé were en route to some event in the city, and she was obviously chafing in the SUV while her beau and I carried on a discussion about the magical properties of Mitchell's Wool Fat soap. When she finally lost composure, emerged -- dressed to kill -- from the SUV, and gave voice to her displeasure, I caved and bought the brush too as I hadn't quite got my fill of fondling it. But it wasn't the knot I was enthralled with; it was the handle. And the brush turned out to shed about a hair per use over the the next three months, so although I might have granted the M&F Blonde had a noticeably different feel, I hardly regarded it as superior to my humble Rooney. And if it did its job better, I didn't notice it. The foregoing leads to the point that when something finally snapped and I went off the deep end with brushes back in mid-October, I really didn't have much more experience with them than you when you bought your Chubby 3 or ccleme (the OP) does now. The difference is that whereas you bought a couple of high-end brushes, I bought 28 (including one with horse hair and one with boar) in 6-7 weeks. I don't know how that happened. I clearly needed an intervention. However, I have not regrets, other, that is, than having missed out on the Classic Shaving offerings of brushes with old Rooney Finest knots. The badger brushes I now have range from a Simpson 58 in Best Badger (also have a Chubby 2 in Best) to the Rooney Style 1 Size 2 in Finest identical to this one. While I have some favorites, I still don't know that I go so far as to say I think one is superior to any of the others. Each of them does some things better than other things, e.g., lathers, releases, etc. And the selection offers a wide range of sensory experience, e.g., scrub, scritch, soft massage, etc. But judging superiority is, I think, subjective. More expensive, more rare, and/or more big don't equate to more better. And so what I've concluded is more brushes is better. Back to the subject at hand, for me the jury is still out on Simpson Manchurian. I invested at least a couple of hours in reading reviews and related posts before deciding to go after an M7 or a T3. One of the most interesting threads I found was on another site. If you search on "A Journey With Simpsons T3 Manchurian - A Review in Several Parts", you'll likely find it. I like my Butterscotch T3. I love the handle, but I'm not sure I can say I prefer its knot to that in either my 58 or Chubby 2 in Best, and I would unhesitatingly let it go before I'd give up several other brushes I have, including both Simpsons and Rooneys. I'll add that while I'm dead sure I can distinguish between a brush with an old Rooney Finest knot and any other brush in my stable, I'd be hard pressed to identify a difference (other than related to dimensions, density, or shape) between my Manchurian T3 and either the M7 Super or a couple of M&F Blonde Badger brushes I have. What that may suggest is that my T3 is at the lower end of the Manchurian quality range, which possibility contributes to the lingering temptation to snag a Chubby 2. What has held me back are 1) the fact I'm fairly sated with brushes now and 2) given the characteristics of my T3, I'm a little concerned that the knot diameter/density/loft combination of the Chubby 2 might be too much of an otherwise good thing for my taste. Oh yes, and head size. BTW, it occurred to me while reading your post that B&B might do well to include a field in the Member Profile Section for head dimensions. For the sake of this discussion I just measured what seem the most relevant dimensions of my head. Ordinary Vernier calipers present a challenge for this purpose in that their outer jaws don't extend far enough to make direct contact with the points where my earlobes attach to my jaw. (I could find no name for that anatomical location!). So I had to open them (the calipers) up and press the scale fairly hard back into the corners of my mouth with it just slightly open (wider opening results in a change in facial geometry, thereby reducing that particular dimension) until coming within a few millimeters of making contact. The lobe junction-to-junction, linear distance turned out to be 5.47mm. The other measurement I took was the linear distance from 1) the point where the columella forms a junction with the upper lip to 2) the bottom of the chin, with mouth fully closed. That appeared to be approximately 2.91mm.) (#50), I'd suggest sending PMs to all who have chimed into it and poll for interest and dates. This probably has the best chances of happening if we keep it simple. But I also noted this post (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/204551-Kansas-City-get-together?p=3829156#post3829156) (#50) about including demos, etc.
Do you think you should just pick a date as the latter post suggested. I'd incline first to poll members for availability/suggestions, but we need to round some more up first to do that.

You guys might consider posting another thread with a poll, where you have 4 or 5 months picked out.
Tell folks it's a poll to nail down the KC get together.
Once you have a month nailed down, poll for a weekend in that month.
By then you should have attracted the attention of anyone who is reasonably interested in going. Redirect them to your get together planning thread to hash out activities.

I am stuck in St Charles, the one and only soccer game played on a Sunday is that Sunday at 10:00am, my daughters playoffs. If her team was not battling for first I would have a friend take her, but I would never hear the end of it if I missed the playoffs and her team taking first place which I am pretty confident they will do.

I'm not sure where the larger-meetup planning stands. Chris invited me to step into the discussion and try to take the lead.
I'll suggest a possible alternative scenario. Let me know your thoughts.
I live in OP between Metcalf and Nall at about 130th (directly south of the Sprint campus). Texaninkc and AgBill have been to my place. I have ample of sinks and surface space got gear, a pool, a pool table, and am near lots of world class BBQ (Gates, Oklahoma Joe's, Jack Stack, Smokehouse, & Hayward's), a great neighborhood bar with unsurpassed buffalo wings (The Peanut), and The Gents Place (http://www.thegentsplace.com/) and Diebel's (http://diebelsg.com/). The Plaza is about 20 minutes north of here.
I'd be happy to host a get-together in late June or after that. It wouldn't be as convenient to members coming from North KC, but benefits would include ability to gorge on carry-out BBQ; show-and-tell and demo shaving wares; and hang out with lots of space in a casual environment where we don't have to worry about how long we hold a table.
Let me know if this would be appealing to any of you. No arm-twist. Just an alternative possibility.

OK, past time to pick this back up and either get it rolling or let it die. Sorry for the lapse in attention, but the M&F Group Buy was consuming for a while.
I did take advantage of a strategic opportunity run the notion of hosting a B&B get together past my wife 2-3 weeks back. She readily gave assent. I was a little surprised at first (and then suspicious) by how well that went until a couple days later when she made a pass at leveraging the event as a rationale for purchasing some new patio furniture.
We have a foundation piering project that's due to start on June 12. That will take about a week and, I expect, leave a mess. So although the last week of June is possible, either a Saturday or Sunday in July or August would probably work best.
Scott (of Captain's Choice) has generously offered to provide samples for all who attend along with bottle of the new Captain's Choice Lime aftershave (see below) to be raffled off (draw a name out of a hat).
Assuming there is still enough interest to support doing this, I'm going to need some help. Event planning isn't my thing. So my hope is that some of you will volunteer to serve on a planning committee.
Who will step up?
Things we need to resolve include the following:
- Choose a date
- Determine expected attendance
- Select activities (what to do)
- Settle a schedule (when to do it)
- Decide on food, etc.
- Identify/procure necessary equipment and/or supplies
- Evaluate transportation needs and make any required arrangements
- Ensure effective communication
What else?
I live in Overland Park (Deer Creek) between Nall and Metcalf (directly south of the Sprint campus) and a few blocks north of 135th. Benefits of using my house as a base of operations for the event would include:
- Ample sinks and surface space (for show & tell);
- A pool and a pool table (probably best to make the indoor archery range off-limits);
- Large music library and total control of selection;
- Close proximity to lots of world class BBQ (Gates, Oklahoma Joe's, Jack Stack, Smokehouse, & Hayward's), a great neighborhood bar with unsurpassed buffalo wings (The Peanut), and The Gent's Place and Diebel's;
- The event could run from anytime during the day (e.g., say early afternoon) into the night, allowing members to join all or part of the scheduled activities without coordination and logistics hassles;
- We could reserve plenty of time just to hang out, discuss our shared interests, show-off gear, trial brushes and soaps, etc., without worrying about securing adequate table space or stowing stuff.
For this to get done, I think we need to 1) enlist at least 2-3 volunteers to communicate via PM and/or email, 2) aggressively settle a plan the broad outline of which would be posted here with details communicated via PM/email, and 3) make sure we get the word to all who might want to attend.
Broadcasting PMs to KC area members would be SPAMMING, so we can't do that. But what we can do is contact members we know (e.g. B&B friends) to ensure they get the word and, if interested, are on notice to watch this thread. BTW, any and all who wish to attend would be welcome. There are a lot of members across KS, MO, NE, OK, IA. I'd be happy to assist anyone with lodging arrangements.
So, who still wants to do this, and who will help get it done?

^ This sounds amazing; I wish I could go to it.
If you haven't met Ken, do so. He's a great guy to talk with. I met him last month when I was visiting Kansas City and had a blast.

Thanks for the plug, Mike. It was great to meet you in person at Succotash. I do hope we can pull of a KC area (and beyond) get-together. There are a lot of great B&B members in the local area and proximate region.

I received my PM, I'll have to play it by ear since grad school rules my life right now and I have a planned vacation at the end of June. Looking forward to meeting everyone if I can make it!

I also received my PM and am still enthusiastic about a KC gathering. I just graduated from law school and will be taking the Missouri bar exam on July 30 and 31, so early August would be the best time for me. That being said, I am moving from Lawrence to KC in early June and taking my bar prep course on the UMKC campus, so I will be around the area all summer and would attend the gathering just about any time. I have some event planning experience and would be willing to help as much as I can, with the caveat that my free time will be limited by my bar studying.

Thanks for the post and for the offer! Let's meet for coffee. I'll follow-up with you via PM.

Im pretty flexible on weekends, save a few dates. July would be best, though. You've seen my gear, and I havent gotten anything new--- been out of it! As for food, well now your talking!!! I'll contribute for burghers or brats!

How about early August? I think that might work better for Wendy and a member from Lawrence.
We need to start brainstorming activities.
For one, I will demonstrate my après-rasage, 2-minute full-face immersion in a bowl of Florida Water-laced ice-water, along with one-on-one instructions for anyone interested in mastering the practice.
Other possibilities include soap-destruction trials. I'd be willing to supply the soap, within reason.
Some activities might be good candidates for video-recording for posting on B&B. We will, of course, keep faces and other personally identifying features, as well as real names, off the boards unless permission is granted to do otherwise.
BTW, The Pooney would be pleased to stand in photo-shoots with any other brushes that attend.
Other ideas? Come on. Let's get this rolling. :badger:

the first weeekend in august is a no go for me as i am ina good friends wedding that weekend. however, the 10th and on works well. i havent made my schedule for my primary job yet, so i can always save time in my schedule. i think that shooting for early afternoon into the evening would be the best, as weekends are not for waking up early. not sure what that first thing you mentioned is, but it sounds interesting. maybe going out as a group to diebls, or one of the other places close to your house would be good. also i think that there is a place called pin stripes near your house too that might be worth checking out. maybe a small pool tournament could be in order? off the top of my head, thats about all i can think of....will post if anything else comes to mind
