View Full Version : After nearly 3 years, I have a job interview

Nearly 3 years have passed since I lost my job. Yes, a very long time. I sent out countless resumes and only had 1 interview and 3 calls. I've been doing odd jobs to have money, mainly working for my neighbors who are Amish. Repairing equipment, plumbing, driving to dairy, horse and equipment auctions and a number other things.

I was laid off July 31 2008 from my maintenance job at a concrete plant. At first I took the summer off, thinking getting another job wouldn't be difficult. When fall came I sent out a few resumes but didn't get any response. I figured it was just that time of year.

Spring came and I was sure I would land a job, but noticed that there wasn't many listed. I used the internet, newspapers and word of mouth and sent out 20 to 30 resumes--even to places that weren't hiring. Nothing...

Summer came and went, then fall and winter. Spring came again, my UC ran out and the job market was in the toilet. I sold my Jeep and took it as it came. Another summer, fall and winter passed and I finally got some good news. A local steel plant was hiring. I applied, got a call back, took a test, got anotehr call and waited for the past 3 months for the call that still hasn't come.

Today, the phone rang, not for me I thought, so I took my time getting to the phone. What do you know, a totally different company gives me a call and I have an interview tomorrow morning. I don't think I've ever been so nervous and excited in my life. I'm 38, time isn't on my side and I need this job so badly.

Since no one is home but my dog, I had to tell someone, so you all get the news before my g/f. Yesterday I found out my tax refun was far more than expected, today I get the news of a job interview, tomorrow, who knows...

I've been so depressed that I'm not overly optimistic about the outcome, I'm simply hoping for the best. It's been a very rough time for a lot of people who've been out of work and I really hope I can get back to work.

Anyway, sorry for the novella and thanks for ready. :biggrin1:

I can only give you encouragement. I too haven't worked since summer of 2008 and blew all my savings to survive. Now, I only have enough money for one more month and don't know what I'll do next. After not getting any replies from countless dissemination of my resume, I had an interview last week. I thought the interview went well and they'll let me know within a week. Now it has been a week and no reply. The wait is excruciating and desperate. I never thought I'll be where I am because I did what the society expected me to do: studied hard in high school and went to a college; got a graduate degree; volunteered and served my country; paid my taxes. You're not alone and don't feel you've failed in life. By living and surviving, you're doing good.

Also, when you do your shave tomorrow, don't do anything out of the ordinary. You don't want to jinx yourself.

Good luck my friend. And don't feel bad about your situation. I've been out of my career field for over 2 years. I got laid off in Dec 2009 from my IT job. I work full time at the local Home Depot (bleh) and do side computer jobs for extra $.

I don't want to mention how many resumes I've sent out. Also a ton of phone interviews and handfuls of face to face interviews.

I know what it's like to be out of work - I was downsized twice and was out of work on and off for two years. This was a quite a few years ago - I was lucky through this last downturn. Been working for the same company for the last 14 years and am thankful for it. I don't know what to tell you without sounding trite. I guess the best advice I can give you is to be yourself - answer the questions honestly and play up your attributes. I hope it all goes your way - God knows you deserve it.

I was out of work for 8 months and found a job. One thing I said in the interview that made a difference was to tell the interviewers that this job was specifically a job I wanted. This was not a job that I had just applied for along with numerous others. I explained that the job fit my skill set and It would be a good fit for them and me.

I knew the history of the company and asked questions along with answering them.

Good luck!!!!

Good luck tomorrow. It is normal to be a bit nervous. All you can do is your best and not worry about things beyond your control.
