As a kid in the 50-60s I remember them being called butterfly razors. I never heard TTO until I hit the shaving boards.

So if ever I want to fix a problem on a straight razor, or see some imperfections, just take a mini-sledge to it! :w00t:
Wonder if this technique will also fix me a sandwich?

probesport

Howdy!

I really hope I'm not like the 14th guy posting this, but here goes anyway:

"How It's Made" is one of my favorite shows, and last night the ULTIMATE episode came on. In addition to hand made duck calls and Duke's Mayo, they showed both DE razor blades, AND the mighty Merkur Futur being produced, from scratch!!!

Talk about your razor porn!

The blades were "Croma", although I would guess that it was Merkur that's actually producing them. They also briefly showed what looked like a cheap DE razor that's produced under the "Croma" name, it looked like a good cheapy, I may pick one up and report.

The Futur was shown in all of it's glory, from the zinc-injection molds to the aluminium handle boring, to the final assembly and adjustment. Personally I wish they would have done a progress or something, but I'll take what I can get!

Keep an eye out for this episode, it's good stuff!

Sorry if this is a repost.

The DVR didn't capture any info like that, I can tell you this though, I DVR'ed it on The Science Channel, on Friday. 4/15/11, at 9PM EST.

I also checked On Demand, it's not there right now. The on-demand shows always list the episode numbers.

Good luck in your search, if you find it, please share!

EDIT: Also, I think I should say that I'm using Verizon FIOS.

The answer is Episode 3 of Season 10.

EDIT: According to this page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_How_It%27s_Made_episodes#Series_17:_2011-Present), the numeration is slightly different... It will be Episode 3 of season 17

Only the 2nd thread, I think.

Merkur is a subsidiary of Dovo, the straight razor manufacturer. Croma is made by Feintechnik. Both German but different companies.

Great episode! I would have never guessed there were that many steps in making a DE blade.

That amazed the heck out of me also! Metallurgy always fascinates me... I think it's cool that you can completely change the properties of a material by careful application of heat and sub-zero coldness.

I couldn't believe how hands-on it is, and how often people actually look at them to make sure they're ok.
