I recently acquired a gold Gillette Toggle with an adjustment ring that will only move between 5 and 9. Having read previous threads on the subject, I've given the razor at least a dozen ultrasonic baths, tried soaking overnight, etc., but the ring remains stuck. Is there anything more I can do? Can anyone recommend a good repairman?

Thanks!

Isn't the toggle disassembly thread the one where he couldn't get it back together?

Thanks, alex. Now I have a better idea of how the razor works. If only I were mechanically inclined! I wouldn't know where to begin or what tools to use, etc. I'd feel better leaving the repair in the hands of a professional.

Yes, don't do this with your toggle

Ok. You suggest that you can disassemble a toggle and put it back together.
Am I to assume that those pics are the ones you took? If so, what is the function of that ring that appears snapped? How does one go about removing it without snapping it?

Do you use a tapered punch to re-crimp that toothy plate back onto that shaft inside?

If I remember correctly from the original thread, it was broken inside the razor. He didn't know it was broken until he took it apart.

So, is there anyone dependable out there who can make the repair without breaking the bank? Would Razor Emporium be a good choice?

I have an executive which exhibited the same symptoms.

I soaked is in a VERY mild ammonia based solution for a long time (3 weeks).

The fluid eventually worked it's way into the razor to free it up by dissolving the calcium buildup.

the thread was about the ring breaking, it was due to age not because he took it apart the wrong way.

Then the questions still remain. Was he ever able to get it back together?
Have you done this successfully, and how?

One end is smaller than the other, the rod size is the same, but one end is knurled. best way to push the rod out was to use a 1/16 brass rod and tap it out. (same rod used for straight razor pins.)

he didnt due to the ring broken, he was trying to fix the tray, not the clicking mechanism, the toggles tray are higher than the otherb tto's fatboys or slims. he thought due to height of tray that the toggle was defective but it wasnt. that's how he found the corroded ring inside was broken.

Do you know of any instance, where a toggle was disassembled, and put back together?
Are you suggesting that OP be the first?

You seem to be pretty aggressive about him suggesting the OP could do it himself. I think we get the fact that you feel its a bad idea. No reason to continue to beat us all over the head with it.

I keep asking because I have yet to see an answer.
He said "if I can then anyone can".
The suggestion is that he's done it, yet he won't say so, or answer how.

I recently aquired a F4 Toggle off evil-bay which had a similar problem. I could move it from 9-7 and no further. I let it soak for a couple days and it got so it would work from 9-5 or 9-6 but not easily. What I finally did was take a few pipe cleaners and clean under the blade tray. You will see where the gunk really builds up near the center of the razor. Get as much of this out of there as possible. Then after not being able to get anything else to work I used a couple of drops of Kroil around the adjuster knob, down the center shaft which operates the doors and between the blade tray and the safety bars where they come up through the center of the razor. I let the Kroil soak in for a day or so and it worked through the build up of what ever was preventing the adjusting mechanism from working.

After I got the adjusting mechanism where it would move I submerged the razor in hot water and worked the toggle and the adjusted back and forth. You would be amazed at the crap which worked it's way out of the razor once it was moving freely. I managed to do all this with out using an ultra sonic cleaner but I keep thinking maybe I should run the razor through one just to be safe. I really didn't want to as all the numbers and Reddot were still present on this razor and I didn't want to risk them falling out.

You can't just soak it, you have to constantly work all the moving parts (adjuster, tto knob) open and closed to slowly break up the decades of gunk in there.

I have used many of the wd-40 type penatrating oils in my work for over 35 years. kroil, or "crow oil" as we call it is really amazing stuff. The best I've used.
On another note, the broken ring inside the toggle razor. It doesn't look repairable and I would be very surprised if anyone has a part to repair it. How was the razor repaired?
