I just picked up one of the most attractive razors that I have ever seen: a Karl Engels, made in Solingen. The design says Art Deco, but I know nothing about when it was made. 30s? 40s? - no idea. The head design is intriguing, neither open comb nor solid bar. The width is the same as a conventional razor. It came in a nice case, and was probably unused until I tried it out with a Feather, plus my finest brush and soap. Great heft and grip. An easy, excellent shave!

Unlikely. The commie system rarely produced anything meant to pamper or please. Plus Solingen was in West Germany.

It looks of the Bauhaus era. That would place it from 1919 to 1933. Of course it could be a later homage to the design, but I would start looking in that era.

I don't think that case in original, but on what you paid (what did you pay?) it should be worth it anyways.

Nice score!:thumbup1:

It would be nice if you or the B&B could find out the history of that razor and brand.

The Karl Engels weighs in at 61gr.

I'm beginning to think that it is of more recent vintage. The head seems to be stainless steel, and the custom case is covered in rather fresh-looking plastic. The case is definitely custom, by the way - the cutouts fit perfectly, and there are those original stickers.

Poking around on the web, I found a reference to the company, supposedly established in 1939, on the eve of the war. They made straights as well as safety razors. Another trademark of theirs: Emir.

Mike (highball): thanks for posting those stunning pictures. That's a museum-quality period piece. I wouldn't be surprised to see it on display at the MAK or the MoMA.

Added the next day: the handle is silver-plated. And here is what the head looks like underneath.

Hi,
these Variants of the EMIR Razors with the Hexagonal Handles had been produced from the mid 30s until the early 50s. The Handle Design is very typical for German Razors in the Time between 1930 and the early 50s. The Head of the Razor was used till the mid 60s. There had been four Main Variations of the Razor head, the Bar Guard Version as shown on page one of this threat, a completly open Comb Version and two hybrid Versions with open Comb and closed Comb / Bar Guard on one Head. The EMR Razors are rare to find, even in Germany they are rare and it took me at least one year to find one in MINT.
Its a very good Razor and a must have :)
