Hi guys,

got posted to B&B by folks in another forum.

Been DE shaving for a few months, using a cheapie Wilkinson DE razor.
Only got a few quid (pounds) to try it out.

Really find it a better shave - so looking for a decent beginners DE razor to invest in.

Any advice for a newbie DE shaver?

TIA

If the razor is working for you be sure to get a blade sampler pack. Then check out Mantic's video's on shaving. Go slow and just let your technique develop. Mantic's video's will get you started, and you can pick your own gear from there. You don't have to spend a lot to get going, that'll come after the AD's set in. Good luck. :thumbup1:

Welcome to B&B! I'm glad you found us. It's hard to go wrong with a vintage Gillette. I'd suggest either a Flair Tip Superspeed or Long Tooth New. Happy hunting for your new razor!:001_smile

Welcome to B&B, enjoy the ride!

As for advice......

If you are happy with your current razor keep it for a while. If not most any vintage Superspeed or vintage Tech would be a great razor to get going with. Both can be found often on the B/S/T for 10-15$.

Get a blade sampler pack

Cheers Chaps...

The Wilkinson is a cheapo plastic jobbie. Cost less that £5, and was enough to convince me that DE shaving was a better way you go.

I've watched the Mantic videos and shave wtg and atg and get a reasonable shave. Certainly better than cartridge style razors and my old braun electric.

I haven't suffered too many nicks. Always take my time and 'enjoy' the process. Little bit of me time every other day.

As its my birthday coming up I wanted to get a decent razor to work with. Not too many Gillette's on eBay and looking at the B/S/T they tend to be US based

Take a look herewww.gentlemans-shop.com/acatalog/Double_Edge_Safety_Razors.html

I have used this site many times and have received excellent service. The EJ DE89L comes highly recommended, as does the Merkur 34HD.

Welcome to B&B, mate! :001_smile A good starter razor? The Merkur 1904 :thumbup1:

Thanks for the advice!

Optometrist - Useful and not that far from me - maybe I'll take a trip out that way...

Seems Merkur's get a good 'press' for noobs. As I only need to shave every other day and am not a heavy beard grower, I'm assuming a closed-comb razor is preferable.

Cheers

Welcome to the B! Great advice above! Of my small DE collection I am most surprised at the vintage Gillettes. Nice heft and feel in the hand, inexpensive, and provide a fine shave. Of the new razors I bought, I like the EJ Chatsworth the best. Kinda pricy, but I think they have the same head in most of their DE razors.

Yes ... do get a blade sampler. You'll shave better once you find a blade that you like.

Have you made inquires about postage from the US to the UK? Our BST does have some great values!

Have Fun!

+1 on Tech. It is generally agreed to be a very good starter.

Welcome to B&B! I would suggest a vintage Gillette adjustable such as the Fatboy or Slim (I use a slim). That way you have a great razor that you adjust to the level of aggressiveness that you like as you begin your search for the right blades, soaps, brushes, after shaves, etc :tongue_sm Really, try an adjustable, just my opinion, YMMV:thumbup1:

I started with a Merkur 34C HD.....it is a great beginners razor, as a matter of fact it is still my daily shaver of choice, although i do plan on purchasing an Edwin Jagger DE89L Which is supposed to be very similar if not better than the Merkur.

Thanks for all the great advice.

There's a few Gillettes on 'bay, but seem to command quite good money - as opposed to a new Merkur or EJ...

Got a few weeks before I need to make a decision.

Ok - looks like I've managed to pick up a 1966 Super Speed from BST. Looking forward to getting that.

In the mean time I think a Merkur HD or the EJ DE89 might be a nice birthday present.

Looking at the EJ site there are a plethora of models which aren't numbered so its difficult to tell what's what. Are all the DE8xxx models the same?

I like the look of the DE87 or the new DE87811 - anyone got any comments??

Many thanks for all the positive feedback

Edwin Jagger DE89L is a failsafe. Great product. Also, Feather blades and Real Shaving Company cream. All in, the setup is inexpensive and will get you started. The RSC cream can be used fairly easily without a brush until you get more $ to invest. Good luck.

I'm new at this too and so my experience with various products is limited, but I'm using the Real Shaving Company creams in conjunction with soap to build an uberlather. I have NO complaints with the RSC creams.
