When you buy a vintage razor, what should you inspect to insure a safe shave. In other words, what part of the razor may be damaged, even slightly, that could cause cuts, etc.?

Make sure it is clean and sterilized. Put in a blade and check that the blade is tight and even. They are so well made, I don't think you will see many that are not shave ready.

I would say just make sure the safety bars are straight and that there is even blade gap/exposure on each side of the razor when you load a blade. If it's a TTO razor, make sure the mechanism functions relatively smoothly with no binding. Sometimes you can clean up a rough or tightly functioning one with a good soaking, but it's gonna have to be something you consider when deciding whether or not to buy at a particular price. And give it a good soak/scrub in Scrubbing bubbles before using. If you're just getting started in picking up vintage razors, beware! It's addicting!:biggrin1: The hunt is a huge part of the fun, though. If you're patient and willing to leave a few things in the antique stores instead of snagging every specimen you see, you'll stumble on some phenomenal deals. Have fun!

I agree with this wholeheartedly. However, after increasing my number of razors from 1 to 7 in the past 1.5 months, SWMBO is starting to put limits on me.

Luckily, the boss can't tell one razor from another - I tell her I've got three, as that's the maximum she ever sees out at one time. I know, one day I'm gonna get busted. . . then I'll build a long razor rack in the bathroom.

Solid advice.
For adjustables, I would say if it's not clicking through all the settings and you aren't prepared to take it apart (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=192141), move on.

Be very wary of TTO razors. Make sure that both doors come all the way down, and that they press the entire length of the blade very tightly against the base plate of the head. When they don't, even if the knob is tight, you can have an extremely dangerous situation, with the blade sticking straight out, ready to maim you.

Yep, as far as anyone knows, I only have five.
Shhhh! No one knows about the boxes under the bed that have at least 20 more! Especially SWMBO! :behead:

I know, one day I'm gonna get busted. . . then it will cost me a lot of make-it-up-to-you money.
I fixed that for you
