I am the barber to my wife's disabled brother who lives with us. I have a middle of the road set of Wahl electric clippers (not the $15 set you get at Wal-Mart but not the $200 professional set that a barber shop would have, somewhere in the middle). I use 4 different guard sizes for a nice tapered cut.

I bought a 1.5" (the largest that was in my original kit was 1") guard off ebay for $5, so now my haircuts don't come too military-ish/short. My wife cuts my hair, and does a decent job, but not as good as what her brother gets when I cut his hair. After his haircut, I shave his neck with some warm lather and a DE. He has his own vintage Super Speed/Derbys. He likes a splash of Schulton original Old Spice after his shaves. He gets a haircut every 2 months, and a shave every 2 days.

I have been cutting my own hair for the last five years. I have a similar setup with a 40$ set of clippers I usually use a 4 on the top then a 2 on the side just enough taper that it doesn't look home done then my wife shaves the neck. I tried letting her cut the sides and back with the clippers once about three years ago haven't let her try since.
