Those white boars are just so darn cute, aren't they?!

I dunno...I have an Omega white hair boar and two banded boars. For some reason, I just don't like the look of unbanded boar. Maybe I've been so indoctrinated into the badger-is-better cult that I have trouble looking at a brush without the stripe, even if it's simply been painted on the knot.
I do like Semogues, though!

BLASPHEMER! :w00t:
I think I prefer my badgers to look like badgers and my boars to look like boars! But what I really like is the way the boar hair behaves after it's been through a shave - kind of like a little kid who just rolled out of bed on a Saturday morning.

I have one of these (the 1460). great little brush.
Love my 1460! Was thinking of picking up the 1470 (beechwood handle) just for back up.

I just bought one. I love the looks of it. The slight contrast between the boar hair and the slightly darker wooden handle is extremely elegant and nice. I'm in the process of breaking it in right now.

I like boar for what it is - it's distinct qualities which differentiate it from badger (good, firm backbone with nice, soft tips once broken in). I think, from that, I've grown a preference for boar that isn't made-up to look like badger.
But I digress. Nice brush, aburkavage! I had the unpainted handle version. Nice brush - probably the best value in the range.

The thing I like about boar is how palpably 'organic' they are - you can see them age almost from the first time you use them; the tips split and get softer, they hold more water etc. If you use a banded boar for long enough the banding begins to fade, and the brush looks older, weathered, used. I think I do prefer the blond ones purely on looks, though.

Nice! I have a SOC and a 1460 on the way. My SOC is blooming pretty much like your 1460 is. Who says boars don't bloom?

You go with what you like. Personally, I like natural boars. My 1470 is a great little brush. But it you like banded boars, go for it. Give any boar a chance and it will turn from a "sow's ear" into a real jewel.

I prefer blond boars too. I got my 1460 for $13.
Yes, it's silly that you can get a really decent brush this cheap, most brushes for the same money would be a pile of rubbish. I don't use mine much as I have favourites, but it's a great travel, or back up brush.

Yeah, I wasn't looking for a game-changer, just an entry level boar to satiate my itch. Mission accomplished! I don't foresee this little guy taking too much attention away from my Duke 3, but it definitely won't go unused! I love the backbone to softness ratio - I just hope it doesn't soften up too much as I continue to break it in.
By the way, is it just me or has the chatter about boars increased dramatically on these forums in the last few months? Maybe it's the group buy that has brought more attention to Semogue, but when I was deciding which brush would make it onto my Christmas List several months ago, I feel like there was very little emphasis on boars. There have always been a core group of proponents, but I think the bug has hit many more people lately!

It will soften up a fair bit, but I find it still has enough. The Premium in the 830 and 1305 offer more, but for the price of the 1460, it's not worth fussing over.

Yes it has. Possibly really taking off when JP Dyson started an intially sceptical 'boar as good as badger'? thread, that morphed into the boar lathering challenge thread.
That opened a few flood gates, but simply an extra avenue for SBADists to feed the addiction, with less credit card guilt.

Intellectually, I tell myself that unbanded boar is what it should look like, that banding is just a way to make a less expensive brush material look richer---so what--I really prefer the look of banded boar!

YES!!! It's crazy... Just when I was over my SAD/RAD I've just traded some software and some blades for the Semogue 2000.
Anyway... I guess I'll be satisfied for a few days.

I've wondered if the new found frugality since the recession began in 2008. So I wonder if a <$20 boar suddenly looks more attractive in recent years?

Beautiful brush. I like the look of the white boars too. It makes me wish my Omega was didn't have the banding.

I received a 1460 in a PIF. Great brush, IMO.

I think thats a part of it. As a new guy I can say that the price of the different "premium" badger brushes threw me off. Its not that I couldn't justify the price of some of them it was just that I didn't want to spend that kind of money and buy one that didn't "fit" me just right. I was lucky in that I had a family hand me down brush that I put one of TGNs banded boar knots in and loved from the first shave. I also picked up another handle that I put one their Finest badgers in and while I like it there's just not that same "fit" I get from the boar. Now I'm waiting on a 610 like a kid waiting on Christmas.

Just reading this thread caused me to impulse buy a Semogue Owners Club Brush Cherry Wood. Is this a good brush? Never had boar before or a Semogue.

I think you'll be very happy with your SOC. Semogue has great quality and the SOC has premium boar hairs, the highest grade.
I don't own an SOC yet, but have read quite a bit about them. I do own a 1305 which also has premium hair, but in a shorter loft. So based on that comparison, you should find the bristle tips to be soft right out of the box. Initially, it may be a lather hog, meaning that you may have to squeeze some lather out of the knot. As it breaks in, you'll see some of the hairs split into 2-3 ends, this is where the magic takes place.
So at the beginning, it will give you a lovely lather and after a month's worth of lathers, the brush will be absolutely amazing.
Enjoy

Sounds like your off to a great start.
You'll often see comments in these posts that say something like, "there's no correlation between cost and performance". Most of the premium products have some true advantage such as scent, softness etc. etc. and most of those products perform well, but not necessarily better than some of the workmen products.
My first year, I simply alternated between two tweezerman brushes, allowing them each to completely dry between uses and they were fine brushes and Bigelow shave creme along with VDH. Since that time, I've slowly added better brushes and soaps - there's no rush.
I too found it daunting to decide which brush/soap/creme/blades to use. The good news is that you're able to read folks experiences and opinions here. Additionally, you can always post your questions. I'm always impressed at the quality of feedback that I receive almost immediately.
Glad that you've had the good experience of being able to use some family legacy shaving gear. You get the win/win of good shaving gear and familiy tradition.
Good Luck with the 610, I'm sure that you'll enjoy it.
