View Full Version : Stopping the madness!

Like many people here, I've been going crazy with the razor/strop/hone purchases for the last few years. DE/SE/straight razors - I've collected them all. Strops? - Yes! Hones? - Yes!
I don't consider myself to have been bitten with the brush and soap/cream AD's, but I still have more of each of those items than I need (half a dozen brushes, and more soaps/creams than I can use before they go bad).
The only AD I certainly didn't catch is AS/fragrance AD.
Anyway, the madness must stop! :blushing::blushing:
So, my aim is not to buy any more razors until the end of 2011 (at least).
These promises have probably been made umpteen times on these forums - mostly only to be broken a little while later :lol:.
This may be an exercise in futility, but I'm going to give this a good go.
I'm going to need your help with this (from this bunch of enablers? Fat chance!).

I don't have a brush Ad
I have a half dozen brushes...
You, Sir, are in denial!
You will be buying more razors.

It defies logic.

Know how I stopped SRAD? I started buying Ouds. No more money for straights. Problem solved.

I give you 2 months at best but you've got my support, call me if you feel the urge to buy something and I'll get someone else to snipe it from you :tongue_sm

Ha! True!
However, since I don't want to buy every brush I see, I'm going to stick to the fiction that I don't have brush AD.
I do want to buy most straights that turn up in the BST. ------ I'm going to have to avoid the BST like the plague.

Good luck sir.
That's a lofty goal.
I can help you out by purchasing some of your straights.

I'm going to concentrate on my bicycles again instead. That's an expensive hobby. However, I commute by bike, and basically go everywhere on a bike, so it's a(nother) useful hobby.

It's really a shame you made this decision when you did. I was going to list a NOS Filarmonica 14 on the BST for $95 delivered....
I guess you're out, though.....

There is absolutely no cure for SRAD....I'm positive of it now.
I've pretty much stopped SBAD, SSAD, SCAD, but straights I cannot stop.
Unfortunately I'm developing a cologne acquisition disorder, but fortunately it is limited to the about 50 samples I have in the mail. Hopefully I can avoid buying a bottle of everything.
Good luck on your quest to stop the madness. I give you a couple weeks at best :biggrin1:

I hear you...I went through the pain of SRAD all of last year, then when my little princess began to crawl into the washroom behind daddy, I forced myself to start using my DE's again...and haven't looked back...sickening how many blades I have in my drawer that I keep telling myself I should put up in the BST and yet...what worries me is that with SBAD in full swing, if SRAD kicks in as well...I'll need some serious help!!!

I almost cracked when I saw that ivory scaled Heljestrand in the BST.

Strangely, I also have a baby daughter (10 months). I usually wake up before 5:00 am, so I have the bathroom to myself, but recently she's started waking up with me, and so she gets left with me when I shave. I've also started switching to a safety when she gets into the bathroom.
My razors are all on the top shelf of my closet for now, but I'll move them to a locked box soon.

I have an offer for you.
I'll keep them at my house.
You can visit anytime you like.

I have to do the same.
Our daughter is 16 months and likes to be where the people are.
If she's not in the bathroom, she's banging on the door.

i find the worst part of ADs is holding on to stuff that I don't use and still decide not to put it up for sale... or PIF
IMHO, it's only natural with all the variation in this hobby.. it's no longer only the result, but the journey too...

Yeah, I know what you mean. I have several straights that I haven't used in months, but I cannot bring myself to sell or PIF them.
One is this 7/8" smiling W&B. Hollow ground - must be a regrind. I absolutely loved the shave when I last used it, but I have so many razors that it never seems to make the rotation.

Isn't Jan 1st the end of 2011? It's one end anyway.
If you look at it that way...
I admire your fortitude, Major, you've met your goal!! :w00t:
Maybe you should do like Rick Boone and put in your signature that you don't want to buy anything and if you are tempted, someone must bring you back in line!

Allright Yohann, you have my word, I refuse to sell you anything if I put something up on the BST & if I catch you making discrete questions about someone elses listings, I will report you!
How's that sound :biggrin1:

Excellent!! Put me in my place it I look like falling off the wagon. You almost had me PM'ing you about 15 min after starting this thread. That Mk 31 was calling out to me. However, I prevailed. :w00t:

Ha! Still, with no insurance, and no car payments, I think I'm still ahead. I was tempted to buy a 'cross bike, though. So many sales at the moment!

Psssssssst.
Yohann. I was lucky enough to get myself a second Kron Punkt the other day. One of them will have to go when I decide which one to keep.
Are you interested?

If I am not under the self imposed limits, I subscribe to the Add one Lose one method. Any time something joins the den, something else is cast out.
It really cuts down on temptation and impulse buys, if I know I will be unloading something that I enjoy using.

Well I should have said, the limits that will keep SWMBO from slicing my throat with all those new and shiny razors that I want to bring home.
