View Full Version : 1st SE Shave, and a MMOC No Less!

Gentlemen,
Today I feel as if I have become a man. I shaved for the first time with an SE this morning and it was incredible. I posted a previous thread regarding purchasing a more aggressive razor than my DE89L and I received many responses. One came from drew50 who suggested the GEM MMOC. I pm'd him and he was kind enough to tell my why I should try an SE and use this "gem" of a razor. TheVex2 was also kind enough to bestow upon me his MMOC wisdom. Thanks to both of you guys! While many implied that I might be a bit out of sorts to try such an aggressive razor for my first SE shave, I was not deterred. Heck, I figured I could hit up drew50 for some free balm, septic, and guauze if I carved up my face, since it was his original suggestion to purchase the razor.:lol1:

Now to the shave. When I put the blade in the razor and turned the handle I thought, "this cant be right, there is SO MUCH exposed blade!" I checked everything a few times, and sure enough, it was in right. I have to say that I was a bit hesitant with that first stroke. The first stroke went fine and the blade made a very cool sound cutting my beard. First pass WTG went great and not a cut to be found! Second pass XTG was even better and still alive. Third pass ATG :scared:(yep, I said ATG) was beautiful and not a single weeper. Touch up and I was done and in shaving Nirvana! My wife said that my face is smoother than it has ever been and that it truly felt like a baby's butt. Outside of a very small area on my upper lip at the nose, it was perfect. I opted not to go over this spot one last time due to the difficulty of finding the right angle with the GEM, and because I didn't want to potentially ruin an otherwise ideal shave. While the GEM MMOC may not be my daily razor due to potential time constraints, it will definitely be in my rotation and the razor I go to when I want an incredible shave.

Excellent !!!

If your first MMOC shave - and your first SE shave - was that great, just wait until tomorrow!

I've been SE-ing for a month, with a 1912 Damaskeene and a Micromatic Clog Pruf. I have never had such great shaves this month as I have had in my five years of DE-ing.

This weekend will be my MMOC's debut. I hope my success will match yours.:thumbup1:

Hard to believe but shave two will be better than shave one. Congrats Zeno. You made a good decision when you went with the open comb micromatic.

Yeah, yeah, you've heard it before but I have to say it again.

The Gem open comb micromatic has to be the most underrated razor out there.

It will if you watch Mr Guys micromatic video on YouTube. SE razors use a slightly different technique. Follow his advise and you'll become another OCMM fan.

:shaving:

Let us know how it goes.

"While the GEM MMOC may not be my daily razor due to potential time constraints, it will definitely be in my rotation and the razor I go to when I want an incredible shave."

Once you get over the newness of SE shaving, there is no reason that a shave with a OCMM should take any longer than any other wet shaving razor.

I've watched it a number of times - and watched it again a few times !!! It really helped me get the best out of the Clog Pruf. :thumbup1::thumbup1:

My favorite razor of all time. Just can't say enough about it.

I don't usually fall into the SE camp, but used an OC Micromatic this morning (courtesy of the Great Canadian Traveling Box 2). Have to say that there is definitely something to it. A quick, close, no drama shave. :thumbup1:

Congratulations on what sound like a great first-time SE shave!

The first time I was ever able to go ATG on the upper lip without drawing blood was with a MMOC. It's a great razor, as is the 1912 and, for a milder shave, the Heavy Flat Top a/k/a G-Bar. If I ever settle down with one or two razors, it may well be the G-Bar for daily shaves and the MMOC for heavier growth. I find SE to be more intuitive than DE -- it's just easier to find the correct angle.

I'll quibble just a bit. Micromatic Clog Pruf for daily, Micromatic Open Comb for the heavier growth.

You are spot on regarding the intuitiveness of SE. I guess I still truly sucked at DE after five years, because after my first 1912 Damaskeene shave, I finally found that which I seek. :thumbup1:

I feel the same way about DEs. I got ok shaves, but nothing spectacular. Once I picked up a GEM, though, started to get what I'd been missing. Great, easy, fast, comfortable, close shaves.
