I decided to try one of the open comb merkurs and decided on the 1904 because the 11c has the same handle as my 34c and 37c razors. I can say that with this razor I can get and maintain a BBS every day with very little to no irritation and almost no nicks and cuts. This is a very mild, forgiving razor, but man does it suit me well!

Congratulations. The 1904 is both superb looking, and a great shaver.

The open comb 1904 was my first DE. I ordered my friend one as a gift but the quality control has slipped. The handle on the open comb looks like crap now. I ended up getting him the long classic. I also ordered the closed comb 1904 as a replacement because for some strange reason the closed comb comes with the nice handle. I definitely enjoy the closed comb more. It's more aggressive and I can feel the blade. The open is great for when you let your hair get long.

I thought the open/closed combed razors had the same handle?

It's supposed to. Lately however the open handle seems to be crappy. I've checked several sites and had email conversations with the owners. I think I still have the photos that I took comparing the two. Check out classicshaving stock photos between the two 1904's.

Some complain about another QC issue , plating problems. Are those quality issues still with the Merkurs?
