Hey guys, I am already hearing from some who have received their free samples. (Edited to add: if you want a free sample, send me your mailing address via PM and I'll get one out to you.)

For feedback you can do one of two things:

1. Weigh in here for all to read OR,

2. Simply PM me with your feedback.

By all means use the sample a couple of times and ask SWMBO what she thinks before you get back to me.

I am looking for two specific areas of feedback:

First, your overall impressions of the AS. Please be candid. The very nature of this site is how very encouraging it is and that is a good thing. However, I don't want positive feedback for the sake of being kind and encouraging. If you don't care for it, let me know. If you really do like it then by all means say so. And tell me what it is you like about it. The start? The finish? The moisturizing? Etc.

Secondly, any qualities you wish it had. More burn? Last longer? Is it too strong? Less moisturizing? You get the idea.

Thanks for your time and evaluation.

Your sample arrived today--it took me a minute to realize that the Ronald Reagan-stamped tube was from you! I was worried that a group of angry tea-partiers had finally figured out my address and shipped a pipe bomb to my commie ass. Luckily, I was in for a much better but no less explosive experience when I opened it up.

Smells like some mighty fine medicine in the container, but we'll see how it fares tomorrow morning!

*Edit* On a purely aesthetic level, it looks how I mentally think a bay rum should look... a nice rummy amber. I know that probably has little basis in reality, but many bay rum companies also color it amber.

Got it today, used it today.

After my shower, I shaved with an Arko shave stick and Kiss My Face "superlather" combo. Two pass shave with some ATG to smooth out the cheeks. Followed by Thayer's Superhazel (as always). Once that dried down, I splashed on a liberal amount of your Bay Rum AS.

Noticed a little alcohol-burn, not unpleasant. The scent was perfect for me -- bay rum with its typical spicy warmth, but not nearly as sweet as some. Maybe "cleaner" is a good description, as in "not cloying." Some Bay Rums (attention Bigelow) are really, really sweet and not something I would use. My wife and children liked the scent -- my wife said "Christmas" and my children said "cookies." I don't get either, just a very nice, classic bay rum that I would use frequently.

6 hours later and I can still smell it a little, so longevity is better than many bay rums. Great job! :thumbup1:

First off, LOVE the scent. What is it that is different than other bay Rums? Well, my unskilled nose can't pick it up, but I know I love it. I can see the Christmas and cookies mentioned above, but wouldn't say I neccesarily would say that's it. I wish I could still smell it now to give further impressions.

On me, for some reason, the scent didn't last...I think I may have been a tad conservative in my application, as I didn't get any burn at all. The Tuesday shave for me is a good test of a new aftershave, as I for a very close shave monday after a weekend of growth, and if I'm going to have irritiation, it's tuesday.
My skin is left feeling very smooth, mostiurized and conditioned. Perhaps not as "tight" as after some aftershaves, but that isn't neccesarily a bad thing.

I look forward to tomorrow's shave, using a bit more. My only fear would be using too much and runnig out earlier than I have too!

I will say this...I have spent a good deal of money on Bay Rum, and I would be happy to spend more to use this product more often. If I had to place it right now, after only one day's use...I would put it at #2 on my rather long list, behind only the Ogallala BR and Sandalwood.

Great job! Fantastic product, and really, keep me in mind if you intend to start production for sale (as a matter of fact, even if you don't, I wouldn't be ashamed to ask you to make some for me!)

I recieved mine yesterday, I didnt use it yet so I cant comment on performace aspects but I can comment on the smell. Straight out the tube it smells really good. You did an amazing job getting the spice right. Allspice and clove... I cant remember if you ever said you put the two in but I get a hint of both. Its a beautiful amber color. If it performs half as good as it smells I would consider buying it.

Received mine last night and used it this AM.

My thoughts:
-Nice sized sample, I'll definitely get several uses out of the small vial
-Great color
-The scent - a nice bay rum, citrus and I get a subtle hint of pepper or something spicier?
-Used it after a two pass straight shave this AM, a good "zing" on the skin, not a lot of "hot" burn, very comfortable, very smooth feeling, sweet spot for me in texture category
-Wifey thought it smelled very good (she is a bay rum fan), she could tell the difference between this and others.
- I like the lack of clove-y-ness, too much clove in other bay rums kinda kills it for me

Overall, great product, based on this one use, and several smells last night, I would buy a full bottle.

Well, the title says it all. This is my foray into the Bay Rum world and I have to say, I'm a fan (at least of this AS:thumbup1:).

First off, nice sized sample and classy presentation (the glass bottle was a nice touch, kind of shows me you're serious about this).

Smell - Nice and smooth. My initial impressions upon opening the bottle were mixed as I thought it smelled VERY rummy. Applied however, it evened out and was smooth and a bit spicy. Very light, which is nice, not cloying at all (think Captain Morgan's spiced rum -- it wasn't like that AT ALL)

Alcohol - Nice little burn that faded QUICKLY. Just enough to let you know it's in there.

Moisture/skin condition - At first felt a little sticky, but I'm at work now (approximately 40 minutes after application) and it's glassy smooth and my face feels great. Tight, but not dry.

Bottom line, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Nicely done all around and thanks for the opportunity to try it out.

Based on the condition of my skin, I'd be interested to know what ingredients you put in it for the moisturizing properties as they would be the stuff I'd look for in other splashes from here on out.

I want to make one more comment on the scent. Vanilla is in there, or at least I smelled some.

Used it again this morning. And, I still like it. Would not hesitate to buy a bottle.

When I received mine, I immediately opened and smelled it. It reminded me of Dominica (or at least how I remember it smelling). The next morning, I decided to make it a bay rum kind of day. So, I took out the Ogallala Bay Rum shaving soap (the AS smelled real close to the soap). After shaving, I showered and splashed on some the AS. There was a nice burn (which faded quickly) and a slight linger for a little while. All in all, a very nice bay rum.

I'll ask her again at lunch.

I generally don't care for bay rum, this is the exception.

I like the scent, performance, and moisturizing. Are you going to be sell bottles? Or can I send you glass decant to fill for a fee?

CPC,

I know you asked us to use it a couple of times and ask SWMBO about it, but here are my 1st-day initial thoughts...

Used the BR for the first time today and I was impressed! The scent was very nice, and not nearly as overpowering as my other BR AS’s. Since I started to branch out and try other AS’s, SWMBO has made a few very vocal points to mention that my new stuff is super-strong and that I apply WAY to much in the morning! “You STINK!” has been a common statement as of late… Obviously she hasn’t found a full appreciation of my new scents, and to be fair to her, I haven’t either with a few of them! Anyway, this morning she made NO comment about the scent! I didn't tell her this was a new scent, but I assumed she would rant anyway just because she knew I would have something different, but nothing! So I give it an A+ just for that fact!

It felt very nice going on, with little to no burn. I like the burn, so if that could be adjusted, all the better! And while the scent is nice, it didn’t stay around very long at all. I make this statement after having worn Clubman a few times this week, so my olfactory system may still be in Old Man Powder-Fresh Scent Shock…

And to be fair, I was a bit timid with the amount I used because I didn’t know how I would like it, so I’ll be a bit more aggressive with the amount being applied on my next shave. If it still fades quickly I would suggest the next batch and all future batches be formulated to last longer.

In summary:

PROS

Free sample – Who can complain about that?

Nice scent – Not too sweet and not too “clovey”.

Helped with razor burn – I’ll make it a point to notice this in future shaves.
It did seem to ease any sign of burn I might have noticed, but I did have a fantastic BBS shave this morning with no issues! I’m still a Noob, and I just put in a new Derby today, so my technique and gear haven’t been finalized just yet. I’m also working on my brush/soap application, which could have a major effect on RB as well…

SWMBO didn’t comment – There could be several reasons for this…

1. She thought it smelled nice, so she didn’t comment because it might diminish the effect of her earlier comments and make them seem insignificant, thusly resulting in me applying EVEN MORE product!

2. She was already pissed about something I have done, or haven’t done, and didn’t want to speak to me in general. I’m sure I’m not alone here…

3. Her nose was stopped up from allergies.

CONS

Staying power – Could use a bit more IMO, but further testing will ensue. This might not be a true CON since we are talking about AS and not cologne…

Burn – Would like to have more burn, but others may note this as a PRO.

SWMBO didn’t comment – See above as this could go either way…

Hope all this helps, CPC and thanks again for your generous gift! You can count me in for a bottle of the final product!

The scent lingered on me from about 7am - 11am...so 4 hours for an AS isn't bad (though at 11am it was VERY faint).

lingering scent== its aftershave and its BR so non-issue
soothing
could use more burn
day two like the non heavy spice clove

Used if for the first time last night and am completely impressed. The scent immediately reminded me of Dominica Bay Rum for the first 2 seconds and then I start to smell something orange/citrusy and vanilla. This is a great combination of scents, a deeper and more complex bay rum than what is currently available. I really do love it, when can we buy full bottles of this???

I don't know if it was just because of my amazing shave technique last night or what but I got absolutely no burn. The aftershave absorbed into my skin almost immediately and I actually put on a second helping right away just to intensify the scent.

Excellent job with this aftershave sir!

My sample just arrived. Nice little bottle, BTW.

Looks awesome and the aroma is even more awesome!

Splashed a little on my skin. THIS IS VERY NICE STUFF...FANTASTIC FRAGRANCE PROFILE.

My only constructive criticism is that the scent is very fleeting compared to Pinaud and Masters BR which in themselves don't last too long, either.

But that's the way BR is.

I've refrained from commenting until I could give it a run for a few days.

Good things:

1) This bay rum is top notch in terms of scent. Lots of bay, a little bit of rich spice, great balance. It wears wonderfully once it's out of the bottle. I prefer the scent, actually, to just about any other bay rum I've tried. I tried Ogalalla, and patently hated it. The aftershaves had almost no burn, the cologne scent was kind of one-note. Many other bay rums smell artificial, and although Dominica is good, I like a little spice. This one smells rich and vibrant. Good juice.

2) The SWMBO really liked it, but she has one of the worst noses of anyone I've met, so that's not saying too much

3) Moisturizing. Doesn't leave your skin tacky, but soothes your skin just enough.

What I would want to change:

More burn (just a TINY bit now).

Thanks for the sample!

I just splashed some on now, for the second time, since after I shave I cut everything with Mentos and 444.

It was hard to tell this morning other than the scent. The moisturizing elements of the 444, just overwhelmed the Bay Rum.

I like the scent, mellower and less clovy than the Pinaud which is the only other BR I've tried. As for staying power, I didn't really calculate, but at one point this morning someone said to me "I smell something like an electrical fire" to which I paranoically answered "It might be my AS". Turns out there was a short circuit nearby. (Not that that the BR smelled like an electrical fine to me, but one never knows with other people's sense of smell).

So now that I put it on straight, I do feel some moisturizing on my skin, and no alcohol burn (which could be a + or - depending on who you ask. I like a little burn, but I won't miss it).

I don't have an SWMBO at the moment, but I can imagine the last one liking it, since I like it as well; "Youu smelle goode" (with an Italian accent). We had similar tastes, and the only scent on me she didn't like was Montale Cuir D'Arabie.

Hope this helps. Let me know if there's more info you'd like.

Best,

Here is my (potentialy pre-mature, 1st impressions only) review. For reference sake, I have been traditional wet shaving since January of this year. I also quit smoking a few weeks back and am noticing a huge difference in my sense of smell.

I used unscented KMF cream, alum, and unscented witch hazel to avoid any cross smell issues.

1st impression lasted about 90 seconds, it was very clove heavy. I found that a bit off putting for that first minute and a half.

After the initial wave of clove subsided, the scent became very subtle. Still some clove, but also some nice undertones. Very tropical and soothing. Skin is smooth and I had no reaction from an irritation standpoint.

Wife says it smells like hot buttered rum, she approves. Nina (who is 4) said I am silly. I asked again how I smelled, and she said I smelled sweet. Ella (who is 12 weeks) had a noticeable increase in drool output.

All in all, this is the second bay rum I have used, I have a sample of Clubman also. This one is a bit more subtle and I enjoy it so far (total elapsed time of 40 minutes)

I do enjoy a bit more burn, it helps wake me up in the morning when I shave. I would certainly purchase this product if it was available.

I will edit this post later today with impressions.

Thanks for the sample:thumbup1:

Got my sample yesterday and it smelled great. I liked it a lot better than the Ogallala Bay Rum that I had. I don't really know how to describe the difference, but your batch had a much more pleasant bay rum smell to me. I haven't put it on yet, but will tell you what I think when I do.

Thanks again for letting me try out what seems to be a very good product.

Recieved my sample he other day and used a little splash. This is the first BR that ive tried out. Now the problem is when i buy something from the store i probably wont like it as much as your stuff. I agree on the burn aspect. Scent is nice and spicy and then it evens out to a nice masculine cirtus vanilla that isn't over powering. I think i may be a BR fan now.

Received my sample yesterday, and used it this morning.

First impressions:

Scent: More orange-y upon application than it is in the bottle. That surprised me. Very pleasant citrusy, clovey bay rum.

Burn: Very mild. Like others, I wouldn't mind a bit more. But only a bit.

Skin Care: Seems fine. Didn't seem overly tacky or greasy, that's for sure, which is a good thing. I don't know that it's anything special in this dept., tho.

My one reservation is the scent. I prefer my AS to have little or no scent, so it won't interfere with whatever stinkum I choose to apply afterwards. I have a feeling that the scent of this AS, nice as it is, sticks around much longer than I'd like. So I could see using it on those days when I'd like to smell like Bay Rum. Otherwise, I'd probably stay away.

Good stuff. Thanks so much for the sample! :thumbup1:

Disclaimer: I was a Bay Rum virgin when I woke up this morning.

Got my sample today. Haven't tried it as an AS yet, but smell out of bottle was overwhelmingly clove. I don't like clove. Not sure what other Bay Rums are like, though, so I don't know if the clove here is relatively strong or light.

In the mail today also came my Ogallala Bay Rum sample pack containing their straight Bay Rum Cologne; straight Bay Rum PS/AS/Toner; Bay Rum & Sandlewood AS/Cologne/Toner; Bay Rum, Sage & Cedar AS/Cologne/Toner; and Bay Rum, Limes & Peppercorns AS/Cologne/Toner. The plain Bay Rums are not quite as clovey (but clovey enough!) as the Captain's homemade juice but also more artificial smelling. The combo products smell like nasty medicines with the exception of the Limes & Peppercorns, which is merely tolerable, probably due to the presence of lovely limes.

Anyway, I mention the Ogallala to give me additional perspective on Bay Rum scents, but also because after subjecting myself to its kinda fake smell I began to appreciate Captain's product a bit more. The homemade stuff definitely has a richer, deeper, more complex smell. After revisiting it, I detected the faint but pleasant orange-citrus undertone that someone else mentioned. Maybe it wasn't orange at all, maybe just the clove mellowing or something like that... regardless, it grew on me.

While I surely won't be purchasing anymore Bay Rum products, I will have no problems finishing off this homemade sample.

Edit #1: For the record, I made a very modest financial arrangement with the Capt. to have an up-sized sample shipped to Canada. I just wanted to clear that up for other Canadians who haven't been able to get a free sample due to prohibitive international shipping costs for Capt.

Edit #2: Seems as though I have a sensitivity to something in the Bay Rum (not just to this one, but to Ogallala, too) and will likely be PIF'ing this sample bottle (along with the Ogallala) to a fellow Canuck who wanted in on this trial but couldn't due to said financial/shipping hurdles. I'll make a new, separate post in the AS forum regarding this next week.

So after using this product for a couple of days hear are my thoughts on it. The smell out of the bottle is a beautiful warm scent with some clove and a little cinnamon. On the skin this product is great, it opens up with clove, cinnamon, rum, and butter. Truly one of the better BR I've used. There wasn't much of a burn just more of a feeling of warmth which I like. It dried very quickly and left my face soft, smooth and without any tackiness. Definitely a product that I would buy.

I think it odd that a few have mentioned the clove smell as strong. I get far less clove than in other bay rums I've tried. Pinaud bay rum is very clove heavy, IMO. As a point of comparison.

With that being said, I really like this scent (I am now finished with my sample) and I would definitely order a bottle of this without hesitation. The feeling leftover on the face is top notch.

This is my favorite bay rum...2nd in line is Hawleywoods tied with Dominca, Pinaud is my least favorite, but I still like it (of those I've tried).

I found The Captain's Bay Rum to have very little or no clove smell similar to Dominica. Pinaud and Ogallala on the other hand are completely full of clove, I still love them but they are totally different animals.

Hey guys:

FYI, the samples you have do have some cloves in them. They have been dropped from my other batches - no cloves. I don't like 'em in there to begin with and only included them as the recipe called for them. Having tried both ways, I love the clove-less version much better. So, a good BR has been improved and this based on your feedback and my personal preference to begin with. I guess the "cook" gets to make the call!

Used twice so far

In the bottle I get a clove scent, when applied it has an initial heavy punch of cinnamon, clove, and ?rum?. Then it blooms into what I describe as a woodsy cinnamon with a much softer touch of clove. Alongside those notes I start picking up a buttery, sweet, vanilla type of scent. It dries fast with a almost zero burn. So far the wifey likes as long as I let it soak in for a minute.
I think next I'll test how long it can be smelled for. For this I will need to bring in a new nose. If I'm wearing something it's hard for me to pick up on any brand of cologne after a minute or two.

Oh I forgot to mention, every time I apply this I get some head buzz/rush. It's kinda neat.

While the only other Bay Rum I've tried is the Pinaud I find yours to have less clove smell. I like the more subtle fragrance. It is somehow more refreshing and clean. I also like that it has less sting. I just wish the scent stayed around longer.

If it was for sale, it would definitely be in my shave den.

While I am not good at describing things like wines and after shaves, I will agree with all that has been said. I think the sting is about right. Maybe I am wrong, but if the alcohol content were higher, wouldn't the scent content be lower? And wouldn't that make it stick around less? I wouldn't want that- I want this smell to linger. If it comes up for sale, I will buy it. Good job, Captain.

The only comparison I have is with Pinaud's version, which I like, but look forward to trying other varieties. When sniffing from the sample, before application, the clove aroma seems less than that of Pinaud, but upon application I experience more clove! I found that the fragrance does not last as long as Pinaud, but I also didn't apply as much as I would the Pinaud. As the clove tones down I find it settles into a pleasant cinnamon/spicy/vanilla type fragrance. SWMBO likes its residual fragrance, but it is not very distinct over time. I find it has little if any sting, I would prefer a little more. I happened to push today's shave towards BBS with a Feather a little too hard and got some razor burn. My use of an alum block showed me the error of my ways, but Captain's BR did not sting upon application. The after-effects for my skin were positive, but difficult to attribute solely to the BR as other products were used, such as witch hazel. All in all, It is a very likable AS, I would prefer less clove and a bit more sting. I will certainly continue to use it until it is gone, and if I come to further impressions, I will share them. With a little tweaking, I would buy it and if samples with less clove and more sting were available, I'd love to test that and share my impression as well. Thank you Captain for the opportunity to sample your Bay Rum AS!

Edit: It seems this was an early sample with cloves, I later received a sample w/o cloves, see later post for my impression of that version.

Well Gentlemen, an update of sorts. It has been two weeks now that the thread was started and requests keep coming in for free samples. I'd like to think it's not because it is free but rather it is from the favorable feedback posted. I am most encouraged at your replies and am grateful for all you "guinea pigs" out there.

My grandmother, having grown up on the farm would tell me I got the cart ahead of the horse. The product you have tried was mixed up here in the kitchen and is the result of much fiddling and tweaking with whole batches tossed until I got what I was after. It cost some coin.

Here is the problem: Now that I have what I have been after, I find out it is illegal. Apparently since there is Everclear and rum in the recipe, according to the ATF it isn't aftershave I would be selling. It is alcohol I would be selling. And to be legal I need to fill out a TON of paperwork, pay fees, get inspected - you don't want to go down that road.

So now I need to start over with ATF approved ingredients and try to replicate the version you all like so much. To be fair, the legal aspect has its reasons. They can't just have anybody selling alcohol and the aftershave you have could be drunk by a child. The quantity you have wouldn't do any harm but a five ounce bottle drunk by a youngster could knock 'em cold.

This is going to take time, maybe months but I will get it figured out. Presently I have stuff on order and once I get it will start again. The advantage is I have the ideal sample that has good reviews. I can measure this new version against it until I have one that is a near twin. That is the plan anyway.

To those who have asked, I plan on selling it. Likely it will be in five ounce bottles. I am still working on what my cost is and now that is in the air with all ingredients changing. That is my biggest surprise - it is very expensive to make this stuff. Contributing factors are small batches, paying retail for some ingredients, has to age for a time, etc. For that though, you get a truly hand made batch of bay rum aftershave unavailable elsewhere. It is possible the five ounce bottle will sell for $19.00 or so plus shipping. Is that something you would buy at that price point?

Scott,

PM'd you, but publishing my impressions.

It's the ONLY A/S my wife has ever liked on me. This is a BIG plus.

I love the scent, too. Much less sweet than Bigelow's.

Could last just a tad longer, but it does last. And lastly, seems to be
every bit as moisturising, to me, as an A/S balm.

I love it.

I also NEED some really soon.

I see SD alcohol 40 in your future, which is a bummer, because I think the rum ads something compared to say Superior. I wonder if there is a bittering agent or something that could be added to make it undrinkable but retain the essence. Also, and no idea if the ATF GaF about it, but doesn't Bay Laurel itself make the concoction poisonous and undrinkable? Whether it's steeping or EO, I thought I had initially read when researching Bay Rums that the Bay itself made it undrinkable. Not sure if that helps, but might be worth looking into...

Received my sample Friday, April 8th. Not sure I can add anything new to what has already been said.:bored: The color and aroma was nice and "full" out of the bottle. Used the sample Friday, Saturday, Sunday nights and this morning. Scent last roughly 2 hours on me. Did not feel any "burn", it needs burn. The "mixture's" ratio is good but if more "burn" or alcohol is added you will have to adjust your conditioning or moisturizing agent as well.

Got good reviews from my wife.:w00t: She actually commented again this morning, "that sample smells really nice, that guy did a good job". You get that kind of comment from my wife, it must be good.

So now, after getting some feedback you find out you can't make it b/c of ATF laws.:glare: Bummer!

If or when you reformulate, if you need another "tester" let me know.:thumbup1:

For 5oz. of homemade, great-smelling AS from a small vendor? And a B&B DIY-er to boot?

I think that price is beyond fair. And what's more, it's a good product.

Good luck. Hope you figure out a recipe that works! :thumbup1:

I think that for this quality of product, that shouldn't be a hindrance for you. I know that I would have no problem with paying that for something that has literally changed my impression of Aftershave splashes.

"Bay Laurel" is not the "bay" in bay rum. It's pimenta racemosa which is bay tree oil. Yes, it's poisonous but likely not in minute quantities. The idea behind using SD (denatured) alcohol is to make the product immediately "nasty tasting" should someone try to drink it.

Can't wait to get my sample! I like nice smelling things. I will definitely give it a thorough review (Although, all these positive reviews may subconsciously skew my opinion before I even try)!

The price seems high, but hey, if that's due to cost of the inputs, then that's fine with me. Good things cost money (usually). As long as I'm paying for quality product, and not your new Bentley, then I'd be happy to pay it. (In about two or three months after I get my phat raise that's been promised to me)! But, that still depends on the sample (which subconsciously, I already like).

Sorry to hear about the legal stuff...

FWIW, I would Definitely buy a bottle if/when it becomes available, and $20 is not a bad price for a quality product, handmade, etc. Many folks round here spend hundreds on AS and colognes and whatnot.

I like it! It arrived Saturday and I used it today. It is light, pleasant, and soothing. The scent before drydown is "unique", and I suspect that will change with the use of SD alcohol.

I was concerned that it frothed slightly when I rubbed my hands together, but it was not sticky on my face.

I hope the legal stuff does not get you down. I would consider this at $20 for 5oz.

Dunno why you would need to replace the rum with sd alcohol. You would just need to denature your rum with denatonium benzoate, Bitrex. Problem solved.

I have not noticed separation. Separation of ingredients is a big negative to me. Having to shake on occasion if it is not used for several days is OK, but having to load it in a paint shaker for each application is not.

I received another sample, for some reason my samples got delayed by the USPS. Imagine that! Captain graciously sent me another before we knew of the delay. The latest one which I received is his more recent formulation, which does not have the clove scent I previously mentioned in an earlier review in this thread. I like this version better w/o cloves. It still is a very fine product, great color, little to no burn and lasts about two hours. Soothing to the skin, I would buy it at the $20.00 price point if the Capt. can resolve the denatured dilemma and retain the good qualities of his original product. Very nicely done sir!

I'd surely buy it for $20.

I never tried any Bay Rum, but think this is very nice. My g/f likes it and I've used it after every shave. I don't even want to use my Thayers or Aqua Velva anymore. My face is soft and not tacky or dry feeling. Thayers leaves my face sticky and Aqua Velva is so harsh it dries my skin.

Pros:
Clean feeling. Probably it's best quality.
Smell isn't overpowering and lasts plenty long enough for me (5 hours).
Hydrates well. Not sticky or dry, balanced and soothing for my skin type.
My skin feels soft and smooth; which is odd for an alcohol based AS.

Cons:
Not enough sting, just a bit more for me.
Cloves, allspice or cinnamon seems to get all the attention. Clove is a very strong spice. I have no clue what West Indies Bay leaves smell like, so it could be that.
Last, I'm running out of it. :001_huh:

Overall:
Nice clean scent that reminds me of fall and the holidays. It's light warm feeling is nice after cold shaving. I don't know why, but I smell an underlying orange or citrus smell--perhaps it's the brand of rum used?

Again, I would buy this if it was available. I think it would make a very nice fall & winter AS. You'll need to make a lemon and peppermint based spring & summer scent.

Sorry to read of the legal crap. I hope you can work around it without much issue.

Thank you for the great sample, I do enjoy it and look forward to a large bottle.
John

P.S.
Check out rum reviews to help find one that best compliments your recipe. If you buy a spiced rum and add spice to it, it could be too complicated. 10 Cane, Goslings, Mount Gay and Pyrat are all great rums with different characteristics.

Thanks for the sample. I just shaved (2 day beard) and applied the BR. Overall BR scent is good. If I had to change any thing I would bump down the sweet not a notch and bump up the cloves 2 notches and one notch up for burn. I like to feel the burn.
SWMBO likes it and thinks you should change nothing. :tongue_sm

I honestly can't add anything to whats already been said. The smell is what I wanted a Bay Rum to smell like. And I bet the clove-less version is even better!

The smell has clove, spice, citrus, vanilla, rum not necessarily in that order.

The burn can go either way for me. I was always taught if it burns, that means its working, but after a close shave a little zing is just right.

It lasts just enough, and doesn't waft around all foofy.

My SWMBO loved it. Said it was her favorite so far. I smelled good enough to eat!

First of all, this is a great product. When I first opened it, I thought "Christmas!" but not necessarily in a good way. The good thing is when you put it on, it smells completely different after about a minute. It turns very sweet and light. The smell in the bottle isn't really that important.

It feels good going on. Like someone said, not like scented water. This has some substance to it. It left my face feeling smooth and warm.

Hey Captain!

So it seems that your Bay Rum is a soaring success here with those lucky enough to have received a sample, myself included!

It was very disappointing, not just as a potential consumer of your product, but as a fellow member empathizing with your troubles, to hear that you couldn't legally sell your Bay Rum. Terribly disappointing! We know it was expensive and time consuming for you to make it and send out those samples. It would be a shame to have to scrap it and be out all that time and money.

But an idea occured to me just now. Since you can't sell it, perhaps we who are all interested in your BR could offer to cover the "shipping and handling" cost of a free larger size bottle? Just so it doesn't go to waste. :sneaky2: I'm sure that "shipping and handling" cost would be somewhere in the neighborhood of $10 - $20, which many of us were willing to pay for a bottle. :sneaky2:

What do the rest of you, and the Captain himself, think of this idea?

I like it! :biggrin1: I don't get much of the Christmas-ey part, but I do get a bay rum that's a lot fuller than others I've tried. Rather than just a light bay scent like most others, it is a rich, clean scent that lingers a little while longer than the others I've tried.

Cap'n, I've used your sample several times now. I'm assuming it's the version without cloves but I think it smells so much like Russian Tea that I imagine it must have some, even a little, maybe. Regardless, I find the overall utility of it to be very good. There was a little burn, but not much (which gives me the illusion that I shave very well for a beginner DE shaver!). It also moisturizes quite well, taking care of any irritation or dryness. Finally, the scent doesn't last long so it doesn't interfere with my personal fragrances.

At first I was kind of middle-of-the-road on the actual scent but I admit tht I've grown to like it very much. I'm not big on bay rum scents in general but your version is quite likable. Generally I shave at night so the actual scent isn't an issue but lately I've enjoyed a shower, a shave (a mojito) and being lulled to sleep by the almost drinkable scent.

In sum, I'd buy a bottle.

To get around the alcohol, though, would it be possible to make concentrated versions without the rum and everclear? Users could just add rum, shake, and let sit for however many days until it's ready? Not very practical on our end but very practical on yours. Less liquid means less initial cost and less weight to ship keeping prices down. Just a thought.

Thanks for the sample, please keep us posted on your progress.

This is a great idea. I for one would enjoy the "process" of diluting down a portion into a decant. (the mad scientist in me I guess) Maybe sell the concentrate, put a small list of directions, and a decanting bottle. (same size as the other bottle?). Maybe make sure you clearly mark as "concentrate only" or something of that nature.

My Thoughts on the AS: I love the scent, most Bay Rum scents I'm not to keen on, but this one was wonderful. When applied after a shave, the burn is quick and relatively minor and a few minutes after, the overall face feel is great! Both smooth and all signs of irritation dissipate. The scent lasted for a couple hours for me, but it's hard to say as I don't have any volunteers at work to smell me....

Thanks for the great product, and I hope you can find a way around the legal issues that have come up.

If you do come up with an alternate method of distributing (such as a concentrate as suggested) count me in for buying a bottle.

Well I'm thinking I got the Clove version but I'm not too sure(mine was sent around the 6th). I'm not a wine enthusiast so I won't be saying it has this and blossoms to that.
The only thing I have to say is that I really, really enjoyed the scent in the bottle and even more so once I applied it. My wife liked it as well and there's only a few scents she typically likes on me. I do like the moisturizing effect it seems to have but I do have to agree that a little bit more burn would be good with this. Of course my idea of burn, or lack thereof, may be misleading as I've been applying this after running my alum block on my face and head so when this hits the cheeks they've already had a good burn from that.
Now that I finally found the thread again so I could post my thoughts on the A/S I see that there's legal issue's due to some of the ingredients. I hope your able to work the recipe out with other ingredients or maybe sell a concentrate as someone suggested with directions for what alcohol to add and how long to let it sit for as this is something I would be willing to pay a few coins for when I can afford to do so.
Thanks again for the sample and if you do get another version you need tested like others before me I'd be more than willing to be a guinea pig again for ya. I'm trying to be somewhat sparing in how much I use so that it lasts longer, unlike the masters I bought where I just pour a bunch in my hand.

Couldn't have asked for quicker shipping or anything! Great deal here...

Loved the product, it was actually my first after shave to ever be used.... I was hesitant to try it, because of the alcohol content. I was scared that it was going to burn me alive, but it was a surprisingly nice feel. I am digging the burn! It wasn't overly sharp (subtle but enough), and rubbed in very nicely. I poured some in my hands, rubbed together, and then massaged into my neck working up to the my face. I then let it dry and rubbed another layer in, which still burned, but a little less the second time.

I like the scent... it's something different! I, like others on here, didn't really have a volunteer to smell, but I'll get one soon and get back to you!

Although it was my first after shave to be used, I think I would definitely buy a bottle if the issues are resolved.... and in fact, if you want to try your hand at different scents, formulas, etc... i would even be willing to pay the shipping costs for a small bottle like this one, because it's a cheaper alternative for me to try different scents also!

Very pleased, and although I have no basis to reference the scent, I do like it a lot! Spicy scent, clean finish, and somewhat lingering! It felt great on my face! It didn't feel dry at the least bit, although I did still use my nivea sensitive balm.

Thanks again, and keep me in mind for future samples, even if I am paying!
Cheers

Well Gentlemen, it has been a couple of months now and I have an update.

My homemade BR AS has a name, "Captain's Choice Bay Rum" and it is now available. It is a LONG story with many trial batches thrown out and money burned through but it is essentially the original formula with a few modifications based upon your feedback. At this point my SWMBO would find any purchases MOST encouraging - she has seen the expense side, now she is looking for the revenue side of things!

This refined version is somewhat lighter in color which is pleasing in its own way plus it has a bit more burn and no cloves. I did send five samples to some of you and the feedback on this refined version matched my opinion. Namely that its character doesn't scream "Christmas" as much (less cinnamon and clove but added citrus) and that you see wanting to use it beyond winter - that it is now a fall, winter, spring scent. This was my goal.

Some preliminary research showed that there are many aftershaves using grain alcohol already in the marketplace. I don't see why my five ounce bottles (diluted by other ingredients) should be a threat to mankind. So I'm going ahead with the GOOD stuff.
Cost is $19.00 per bottle. Postage is all over the map (literally) depending on where you live. I've decided to charge a flat rate of $7.50 which is in the middle. I lose a bit on a California or New York purchase but make a bit on a fellow midwest purchase - it all evens out.

I wanted to notify the group with this post to my original thread for the sake of awareness. If you want to buy some, PM me with your email address. Pay Pal only. I invoice, you pay and then I ship the finest bay rum you have ever had. And it comes with a bonus note from the Captain himself! First come, first served. Mind you, this is made in small batches and I have a head start already but if I run out, hang in there - more is on the way.

By all means post any questions you may have any.

Guys, I got my bottles of Captain's Choice Bay Rum today! Very fast service, I assure
you. Great presentation! (If I did it right, a picture of the bottle will magically appear
below.) And the best part is IN the bottle. This stuff is really great; a unique scent---
the only one SWMBO really likes.

Try it, you won't be sorry.

Congratulations on an excellent start. I'm looking forward to being able to buy your bay rum long into the future!

It is here! It smells awesome, just like the sample I received (I got a late sample) I will try it out tomorrow and make sure. I love the packaging and the "letter" (my daughter called it a treasure map)

Thank you

While I wish I got that awesome looking jar, I just received a simple straight-sided glass cylindrical bottle.

But that's is OK, because like in some many other things "It is what is INSIDE that counts!"

First, I must apologize for not commenting on the new sample when I said I would, but there was a death in the family and I recently got a job after being unemployed for nearly 3 years.

In a sentence. This stuff is all win.
I've used a number of Bay Rums since my first sample from the Capt and I can say that none of them were as nice as the Capt's. I'm not just saying that either. I was a firm believer that nothing could hold a candle to St. Lucia, but I was surprised after giving this stuff a go.

A sniff at the bottle, smelled similar to the orginal sample. Poured it into my hand, rubbed my hands together and it felt smooth and light. I smelled my hands and the "wow" hit me. I poured more into my hand, rubbed my hands together and rubbed it around my face and head. (I shave my head)

It felt great. Very clean, light, not tacky, very smooth and didn't dry up before I had a chance to work it around. Good sting, awesome smell that lasts as long as an aftershave should and doesn't dry your skin. My skin feels very smooth, clean and hydrated. It smelled so good that I poured more into my hand and rubbed it over my neck and arms.

I'm not a cologne guy and was never into aftershaves until I started with the DE razors. I never wanted to smell like an old man or a girly man, so I just avoided them all. I can use this and not be afraid of smelling like grampa or some nancy boy. It's manly, strong enough to be noticed, but not overpowering.

My g/f loved the last sample, but she said she likes this one more and I agree. This is like a new improved formula. I'm glad the Capt ran into problems with the ATF if this is what came of it. Amazing scent and performance.

Again, I apologize for not reviewing sooner.
To the Capt. I can't believe you knocked my favorite bay rum off the shelf. My order will be in shortly. Also, I'm excited that a member here could create such a great product. Congrats.

I really liked it too. I have read the whole thing thread, but it really is nice. The thing I noticed is that it really seemed to sooth the skin, and moisten the skin as well. I may have to order it once I go through a few more things, I have almost no room in my bathroom so I can't keep much variety. Again really soothes the skin, not sure if it is the essential oils or what, perhaps clove? I was thinking about thinning out the last bit with a bit of witch-hazel, just to make it last a few times more!

The Captains Choice is one of my all time favorites!

It's my wifes favorite too! Everytime I put it on she says and I quote, "Mmm, you smell nice! Is that the Captains stuff? I like that one!"

Works everytime! :wink2:

You are too kind and your wife apparently has a lot of fellow wives who agree from what I read.

Free samples are available to anyone who has not already received one. I only ask that you give me feedback after trying my sample. More recently members have been buying it outright by simply reading this thread - no free sample necessary. The multitude of testimonies is very convincing and I am grateful for each of you following up as you pledged to do.

I have an update and it is good news. I have shipped enough and learned enough that I have been able to cut my costs and thus reduce the price for you. It is now available for $22.00 CONUS and I pay the shipping! (Prior to this it was $26.50 per bottle - $19.00 per five ounce bottle PLUS shipping of $7.50.)

I PM'd Captain Pre-Capsize my thoughts when I received my sample, but I'll just state again on this thread that Captain's Choice is great stuff. Minimal burn with a scent that lingers longer than Dominica (and burns A LOT less). The product makes my face feel really moisturized.

I definitely plan on ordering a bottle when my sample runs out.

Hey, I just got mine :) . Didn't know you had a thread in the BST Captain. I'll just say, this is the best bay rum AS I have tried (tried maybe four others). It smells great, not super strong, feels great on the face (it turned my "mreh" shave yesterday into a much better one), I have had several women come up to me and ask me about it and then tell me it smells great. Doesn't get much better than that (well unless you are married or taken, then that might be a problem lol). Seriously though Captain you did a phenomenal job and this stuff works great, smells great, comes at a great price and how could you go wrong when you have someone willing to send out a sample, you can tell he takes pride in what he makes. And definitely he should be proud of this awesome product!

YEOWWWW! I came home from work to more PMs than I have ever had before. "What the...." I looked at this thread and Whoaaa - NOW I know. It is those darn satisfied customers again.:biggrin1: Funny how things come to mind but the first thought I had was the scene from the movie, Jaws where Roy Scheider says, "We're gonna need a bigger boat." I'm gonna need bigger batches I can just tell.

I will get to each of you who PM'd me but please be patient as I am like a one-armed paper hanger at this point. I thought that first the community here would be well served by me updating what has transpired in the past few months and what is to come very shortly. So here goes:

The formula is a hit and is set in concrete now but much around it has changed. The bottle in the nearby pic is illegal since a bottle cannot be shipped if it does not have a screw top. And that is a shame as I really like it but it can only can be sealed with a cork. It is not as ergonomic to hold in the hand as our new style although the shape is kind of cool. Ah well, out with the old and in with the new.

I now have a new bottle with screw top that holds four ounces which seems to be an industry standard - it cradles very securely in the palm (unlike the old one). My label has been redesigned (it is now waterproof for those wet hands) and there is a second label that goes on the back listing the ingredients. I do have a few five ounce screw top bottles left that we considered at one point so a few of you will get a one ounce bonus but I think there are only three left.

My status: I was approved as a Vendor just recently. Hats off to Luc for his endurance walking me through it all and being willing to give me time. Quite rightly this very thread was moved from where it originally appeared which was the Aftershave forum. It became commercial in nature and had no business in a general forum like Aftershave. It was my fault that it took a wrong turn but we all learn, eh?

Our website. My web guru was working last night 'til midnight and a very rudimentary start exists. I will be refining it and even when all done it won't be fancy but will do the job. Then he will take it live. A major part of it will be the testimonials - they will have an entire tab dedicated. Mind you, there are a ton of them and only some will be listed but there are a bunch! When it is live I will notify here (I assume it is allowed - mods weigh in if not permitted, not certain the rules)

The photography. My guy will be doing the pics here locally which I will then send to my out of state web guru to put up. There will almost certainly be much back and forth until it is right and I am anal so this may take a couple weeks or so. At the suggestion of the photographer - a creative type that is very gifted - I have changed how I finish off the bottle. I had been tying down a beautiful purple cloth with taffeta and it looked very "craft-like." In discussions with him that will be dropped. Instead, for purely aesthetic reasons each bottle will have the head dipped into special bottling wax and instead of looking like a craft it will just oooose class. The wax is dark green and it just arrived today for me to begin playing with.

You will be able to go to the site and pay with Paypal. I will need a moderator to help me get a hot link on my signature line here on the forum that takes an interested party to the site. Best part is I will offer not only the bottle but a small glass vial sample for probably $2.00 including shipping. Once folks try the sample (as YOU all know) you just gotta have a whole bottle!

All for now but will update this if I think of anything else. Now, on to the melting wax and all those PMs... Whewwwww!

This sounds like a show stopper to me. :nono: I really wanted one of those bottles. :crying:
OK I guess I will take one of the new bottles if I have too. :w00t: :001_tt1:

Now to convince myself to be patient........ :cursing:

Looking forward to my turn... grumble, grumble, grumble, LOL :lol1:
Seriously it is worth the wait, now I must ration my sample.

I am a little late to the game but I actually stumbled upon this thread by accident but glad I did! I have been looking for the "perfect" bay rum for quite a while now and I will say I have finally found it. St Johns was my favorite but the cost is just insane. So I made a blind purchase since this stuff sounded like exactly what I was looking for.

All I can say is WOW! I am pretty picky when it comes to Bay Rum and this met all of my criteria. What I love is that there is no overwhelming single note as is the issue with most of BR's. Most have too much clove, cinnamon, rum, allspice, etc. This is one of those that you enjoy all without any particular note overpowering the other. The other part I love is its longevity which is normally non existant with most bay rum aftershaves. Performance wise it is perfect. No burn and soothes the skin perfect. I will definitely be back for more. If you are looking for a wonderful Bay Rum please look no further and order a bottle of Captain's choice.

Figured I'd pop in again to say this stuff ROCKS. I am a BR junky, and most of my AS's last years, because I have a rather large rotation. THis stuff, I dunno, it must not seal properly and be evaporating or something...becuase more than half the bottle is gone already (in case anyone doubts, this is tongue in cheek, the "evaporation" here is just the like "evaporation" that happens faster to older scotches, or good liquor that is left on top of the bar instead of in the cabinet....)

Might need to place another order soon!!
