Got the girlfriend a Sheaffer calligraphy pen to help her relax during the upcoming finals week. Here's what she just wrote out. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_gjYWf_zgPCI/TY18UFBDDNI/AAAAAAAAAOE/Bu7sxczRWt0/s512/photo.jpg

Aw, c'mon...that's the picture that comes on the box with the pen!

Or she got good really fast. :) Actually, it is kind of fun if you get into it. I used to do music copying back in the day (pre-computers) using a fountain pen and India Ink, writing on ozalid (translucent) paper. I got drafted into addressing all of our wedding invitations. Ha.

Tell your GF she's doing great.

I love fountain pens and try to maintain good penmanship. But I don't have the talent for calligraphy. I have a friend who is quite artisitic and does it. In fact he makes money doing envelopes and things for weddings.

Thanks litespeed! She's been scouring the internet looking for new fonts. It will soon be time to take her to the pen shops around NYC and let her get FPAD like I have.

Carolingian calligraphy is easy to pick up and looks good, too. fwiw. Much easier than "old english"-y typefaces. Carolingian, however, is best done with a slant nib, btw, and some flex is helpful, but not required.

Looks great! I recently got a calligraphy nib for my Lamy Safari. Not the most legitimate option but I'm having fun with it!

When I was in the Navy, I passed the time out at sea by studying Calligraphy. Today, everyone tells me I have beautiful penmanship.

I never got into the ornate fonts like shown in the photo ... my style is more plain block letters, but I make sure they are legible, evenly spaced, and can be read from a distance. Whenever there's a sign to be made by hand at work, I'm the one they call on.

I also fooled around a lot with Origami ... I can do some really neat things with simple office supplies.

Are you saying my $4.50 gift wasn't good enough

I'm looking for a pen with easily changeable nibs for her; a little bit of variety + an excuse to get more ink is great for me and her.

She's already that person at work :biggrin1:
