Anybody else into Archery? Bowhunting, bowfishing, 3D, Field, etc.

I recently got a new(to me) 04 or 05 Bowtech Patriot to hunt deer with this year. I bought it early to have plenty of time to practice between now and deer season. I have owned bows before but this is the first time I have been serious about it. I'm still learning, and just trying to get plenty of shooting in. That's another plus, I can shoot in my backyard anytime I get a few minutes instead of having to go somewhere else to shoot guns.

Yup. Mathews Monster 6, 65lb, 540gr Easton axis 300's, 125gr Magnus stingers, 75gr inserts. Truglo range rover sight, QAD ultra rest. My arrow flight is okay, I am thinking of going to Gold tip velocity 300's and adding more weight up front so I get more FOC. Maybe shorten my arrow length a hair, I have the room.

Circumstances neccessitated that I sell my archery gear a couple of years ago. I'm in a position now to replace it all. I took my 9 year-old son with me to a local archery shop and he had a chance to shoot a recurve bow. He has decided that he prefers traditional bows to compound bows. Great! 2 generations of Archery Acquisition Disorder to budget for. That little monkey better get a job when he turns 10!

With a screen name of "Fletch" what do you think?

Honestly the patriot one of my favorite bows I've ever shot. Is it the twin cam? I still have my patriot and believe it or not I still hunt with a Bowtech Blackknight. Been a few years since I bought myself a new bow, I used to buy at least one (usually two bows) almost every year. One was set up as a hunting rig and the other a target. Although I always got them both in cammo just in case something went wrong during hunting season I'm not out a bow. Only the last few seasons have my target and hunting rig differed. My target rig is a Hoyt UltraTec.

When I was single I was a VERY avid competitive archer. Almost exclusively 3-D but some occasional spot shooting competitions here and there. For a few years I hit at least one and a few times all the IBO triple crowns and always went to the IBO world championships for about 6 years straight. I've bowhunted going on 21 years now. And when I was a kid I shot quite a bit with a little Bear Mini Magnum for a few years..... Come to think of it I've been shooting a bow for more that half my life.

It's the single cam. I had an 06 Bowtech Allegiance a couple of years ago that I had to sell to pay some bills.

I agreed with SWMBO a few years ago to add a family room on to our house. So now we have some 16' walls to work with. I've also got the Caribou. Still working on a Moose for the fireplace. :tongue_sm

It's my second. I was fortunate enough to get one in New Mexico a couple years prior. I love archery elk hunting. Sorry that I waited so long to get hooked on it.

I shot Olympic style target archery for a long time, 3 Olympic team trials. Recurves can be very rewarding plus their are numerous opportunities for competition up to and including college. If your son really is into recurves you should check out USA Archery (http://usarchery.org/)

Mathews Drenalin, Samick Red Stag, and Shakespeare Wonderbow here. I was hot and heavy into 3D for a while, but now I just bowhunt. Still waiting for my first kill with the recurve.

yes.

Just sold my bow, (I had an *ancient* English longbow, which I had no business shooting)...it drew a bit over 60lbs (my draw is more than the 28" standard the bow shop measured it at).
I have a stave of yew stashed away that I'm working on every once in awhile, though, that might *eventually* turn into another bow.

I shoot target! Can't have my bow at school, and I'm stuck in university housing so my bow resides with my parents. (And I'm too busy to have any business spending two hours target shooting much less sitting on here.)

I do 'primitive archery'. All bows are hand made. Missed a deer with one this last season, but it was completely my fault for being so out of practice at the time. Shooting "Traditional Only" certainly adds a level or two of difficulty to bow hunting.

About 10 years ago I really got into traditional archery. I had a wood long bow, custom made wood arrows, and shot in my back yard - in an urban area. I loved it until I developed shoulder trouble. Great activity - start young and stay with it.

I've kinda sorta been into bows for a long time. My newest bow (30ish years) is a Bear Take Down in I believe 50LB draw. By todays standards it isn't much, but the deer it put in the freezer probably had a different opinion.

Haven't had much time for archery lately. I have a High Country Safari that I like very much. Maybe if I get a new job I'll have time for it again.

One observation I have made over the years is that most guys have bows with too long of draw. I'm not sure if it is a macho thing or if they were never taught properly. I have tried bows of others that are the same size as myself and the draw is almost always 1-2 inches too long. Even when they draw their own bow, I watch them throw their chest out to get that last inch or so. Why not just get it sized right and improve your aim? The extra inch isn't going to give you that much power and accuracy is always more important than power anyway.

I just happened to be in a pawn shop the other day when a young lady brought her x-husband's bow in. It was set up real nice and even had a caliper type wrist release. She offered it to me for $120. It was almost too good of a deal to pass up, but when I drew it back I could feel my arm going around the corner and into the next room to get it all the way back. She said her X was no bigger than me. I let her pawn it for $90.
