Who else chases the gobblers around here? Today was Louisiana's season opener. I have been chasing these crazy birds around the woods for five seasons, and after a lot of close calls, this morning I was fortunate enough to bag my first, a 15 lb. jake. Besides turkey hunters, anybody here hunt other game animals?

i'm still a neophyte and have yet to go on my first hunt. I'll be taking my hunter firearms safety course in May. my hope is to go deer hunting next November if and when the opportunity allows. I only have a bolt action rifle, so there are a limited number of places I can hunt in Minnesota. However, my wife's friend is a hunter and her family owns land in Wisconsin - i'm hoping she'll invite me along so I can bag my first deer.

Congrats on your first turkey! They're fun to hunt because, if nothing else, it feels great to get back out in the woods after a long winter. It's a neat rush to call one in, especially if you can see it coming from a distance. I've gotten a couple of birds in the Bluff Country in the SE part of my state. To tell the truth, I have as much fun hunting morel mushrooms during turkey season and always apply during a time when I think they'll be popping out. I live in an area of the state where rifles aren't allowed for deer hunting. Most of my hunting is done with a bow or muzzleloader. I love hunting the Western states for elk and was lucky enough to take one in Wyoming last fall. Oh, the other great spring hunt is a Black Bear bowhunt in Canada. Now that's a rush!:w00t:

The only problem with hunting is that if you shoot something you have to clean it :tongue_sm

Yep, this will be my 3rd spring... but only the 2nd that I really went after them pretty hard. I go with my bow and then we get a 2nd tag as long as it's the last season. So I can hunt all four seasons with my bow and during the last season I can bring a shotgun.

Hoping this year will be the year.

Looks like dinner to me.

I have been contemplating this, and will need the safety courses and such before I go hunting. Growing up my parents would occasionally hunt, but never took my brothers or me. Hunting wasn't a big part of their lifestyle, but fishing was, so we were always on the boat fishing.

Wild turkey does taste better than store bought turkey. I was given a bird by a coworker a few years ago and it was delicious.

Never been turkey hunting before, but I've seen plenty of them while deer hunting.

I use to archery hunt turkey a few years ago but never got into it too much. They are clever son of a guns but they are fun to hunt.

Spindlecone, I'm with you. Out of the different game that I have hunted, I like the taste of wild turkey the least. At this point, I end up making it in to jerky. Canada Goose is a yuck runner-up. Tastes too much like liver to me. I had one bear that was very tasty and another that was meh. I believe that game flavors definitely vary based on diets. I assume humans do to but I don't think there's any cannibals in the forum to confirm or deny.

The one I killed Saturday was delicious. I only took the breast meat, as I've been told the legs are pretty tough because the birds walk all day long. I had no desire to mess with wings or thighs. Anyway, I cut the breasts into strips and marinated them in a mix of buttermilk, worchestershire sauce, mustard, garlic powder, and rotisserie chicken seasoning for about 5 hours. Then I floured them and fried them in vegetable oil. The whole family enjoyed it.

I have rifles, shotty's, bows, and spearguns. I hunt whatever has 4 hooves and is legal during the season. Turkey. I also hunt fish too. The greatest thing is when that red grouper swims up to you "hidey ho, what's new?" and then after a sec turns for that broadside shot, then CLINK, twitch, sink. Awesome.
Check this out. His videos are simply amazing.

Spindle, please invite me over. I can use the bow in the back yard and slowly but surely help you with your problem.
