Hi all:
Only a few hours new to B&B. As I posted in "Newbie Thread", I inherited Grandfathers Gillette. In searching your Great Forums I find I have a Gillette Toggle Adjustable in Gold marked D-1. Then I'm checking E-Bay and there is one for BIG MONEY that doesn't look as clean as mine. Now I'm worried: Should I use this or keep it locked up!

I found one cased with blades etc.. for about $40(?), maybe $35 at a market. Bought it, got it home and found out about them too!! WHoa!! I don't know if the one I got was EVER used, but it has been NOW! Only once, for my birthday shave! I say you keep it, and use it!!! Think of your grandpa every time! I am not a "collector' of anything, things were built to be used!!!

Use it once a year on his birthday.

I have my grandfather's army issue khaki set. I use it July 4th and Nov. 11th.

Congratulations on your razor--you are very fortunate. If you use the Toggle with care you'll probably never notice any deterioration; especially after you expand your razor collection and rotate between different razors.

Congrats on hitting the Gillette jackpot. Your grandfather was a man of good tastes. I would use it sparingly. Gold can wear off.

Your grandfather's Toggle? An elegant shaver, for a more civilized age. Use it, love it, and when the gold comes off, re-plate it in rhodium.

It's in awesome shape!
I use a Toggle as a daily razor (in between using a straight).
Take care of it and you should be able to preserve it's condition.
There are lots of articles on how to keep it looking it's best.

Try it once and you'll be hooked!

Beautiful! I would never sell it since it has a family connection.

Also, to those who know...do all the toggles have the red dot characteristics?

Lucky you!

I'd use it. Maybe I'm sentimental, but I'd kill to be able to shave with my grandfather's razor.

That's a great story. Sadly, both my Grandfathers have passed on, I never had the chance to meet one of them. I have searched one house for any old razors but all I could find were some vintage electric razors. My Paternal Grandmother has just recently passed on and I let my Aunt know if she comes across any razors cleaning out the house I want them. I am not very hopefull considering my Grandfather passed on almost 40 years ago, but you never know what may be found in the corner of a closet in the basement.

If I were in your place I would keep the razor, and use it. Let it remind you of the good times you have shared with your Grandfather.

Thanks everyone for your advice. Great idea AmishMotorBoat, I think I will use it only on Grandfathers B-Day. That should do well for the memories and keep it looking pretty. Now, I need something for everyday. I'll keep looking!

Don't mean to highjack, but.....

The short answer is no.

Toggles come in three head types.

SN Toggles have a standard FatBoy Type head.

The D-1 and F-4 are Red Dot Type.

Chrome Toggles have heads that look like Super Adjustables.

As far as adjustment and exposure, FatBoy type heads adjust blade position while standard Toggles, Bottom dials (both 5 and 9 click) and Super Ajustables move the safety bar position.

I'm sorry, but I'm certain that super adjustables operate exactly the same as fatboys and slims.

Thank you Amish.

I had them all lined up and testing them then got lazy and did not look at a SA.

I stand corrected.....:blushing:
