I've got a couple old Gillettes and a couple of the little travel razors. I like how they all shave, but the old types have cracked handles and the travel razors are driving me crazy with the small handles. My plan is to hit up the hardware store to see what I can find with already (cut) threaded ends that might work.
I have seen Bob's Razor Works and he's making some beautiful stuff (I'm not sure I'll be able to resist), but I'm looking for a project of my own.
Has anyone found anything at the hardware store that would translate into a satisfactory handle? I'm sure I could cobble something together if the threads match, but I'm looking for something presentable if possible.
If you've got pics, I'd love to see them.

I'd save yourself the trouble and just add a Fat Tech handle.

Make a handle out of anything really. Especially if you have the threaded top piece off a split open old type.
Just try to get the balance right.
Buy a dowel at the hardware store and some nuts and bolts. You can get a drawer pull for a cabinet to put on the end.
I have a custom handle I made out of a railing spindle.
A pen, a screwdriver handle, the ear piece off some broken sunglasses. Even an old toothbrush handle would work.
I've seen pen blanks for sale online. Maybe scrap corian or marble left over from a kitchen reno.
Whatever. You can buy a tap to set the right threads for cheap.
Make one out of clay. Pick up an antler in the woods.
You're only limited by your imagination.

As I have some horribly cracked Old Type handles. I'm having some brass handles built to similar (not exact) specs as the original Old Type handles. I'm going to solder the top and bottom caps back on and re-plate everything.
If you're interested I can PIF you one of these new creations so you can solder it yourself. This way you can keep some of the "project of my own" appeal and get most of the bulk purchasing out of the way.
Or you can send me your razor and I can put the old caps on this new handle for you.
Just a thought,
Dave

+1, this was my first thought too. Probably make a much better looking handle than you can throw together from a hardware store.
That being said, if you go the hardware store route, I'd love to see the final pics. :thumbup1:
