Firearm cleaning - Mossberg 590

Hello Gents,
I am an owner of a Mossberg 590 - 12gauge - 9 shot capacity pump action shotgun. I am a proud owner as you can see. ha ha.

Well, suffice it to say my experience with it is loading it and unloading it.
I have way too much respect to discharge it. Especially since i do not have any experience with it. Much less the know how to take it apart and/or clean it. Can anyone provide useful tips/links/how to's on firearm maitenance. Especially related to shotguns or my specific model (Mossberg 590).

If you are not firing the shotgun it will require no extensive cleaning.

Thanks for the link. I totally intend to find a range that allows shotgun discharging. So I am trying to become as educated as possible about it. Safety, maintence, and ultimately customization. Who knows maybe i can get a safety razor built into the butt...haha....

I shoot Trap & Skeet and put hundreds , maybe thousands of rounds through my gun a year.
During the year I only clean the barrel with one of these:

That's the only website I could find in a hurry.
Anyway, I have one long enough for my 32" barrel.

When the season is over, then I take it apart and clean it all up.

Really it depends on how much you use it.

Go to Mossberg's website and download the manual. It should have all the info you need for cleaning and general maintenace. Once you become more familiar with firearms in general you'll develop your own methods for the actual cleaning...

If you're handling the gun quite a bit, you should wipe it down and run a lightly oiled cloth over it before you put it away. Fingerprints are not your friend. If you're not going to be shooting for a while, a little extra oil and a wipe down is a good thing. Just remember to give it a wipe off - run a dry patch/cloth through it before you take it back out shooting. Extra oil is good for storage, but not so much when firing (it attracts more dirt/carbon/etc).

Seriously...from my Army days, the 590 (my 'good ole trusty' Army issue shotgun), is a very good all-around weapon (perfect for close-quarter combat), not only just to collect, but for home defense (if needed), and just good fun 'practicing and qualifing' at the range.

Remember, in order to 'respect' your weapon...she must be known, fired, cleaned and maintained. :lol1:

the 590 is very simple to take down, as are most pump actions. Do some youtube searches. Try "Pump Action Shotgun Disassembly". I believe you'll find some good videos. There are as many firearm cleaning brands as there are shaving soap and cream brands. A lot of it is a matter of preference. There's a lot of information available on the internet for the 590, as well as accessories. And +2 on the safety course.

If for some reason you can't find anything from this site (for example there isn't a basic safety course listed for my area anytime soon), call around to some of the larger firing ranges in your area and ask if they have certified courses.

Here in Utah, the state maintains a site you can go to with several dozen class offerings in several areas. They call it "hunters safety" out here, though, and you'll get info on hunting laws and regulations as well. It's a must if you want to ever shoot anything besides paper and clay.

Here's a video that looks pretty good on youtube of disassembly of the 590. I agree 100% about following the manual from Mossberg. I'll just add that any and every time you are going to disassemble your gun to make sure, manually, that it is fully unloaded.
