Howdy all,

I'm a pretty new cigar smoker and curious about starting with pipes.

I was wondering if there were any leaf lovers in the Toronto area that could point me to a good store, or online vendor.

Also you never know if there are a bunch of us we could start a cigar/pipe meet where we can trade smoking/shaving related items. Or set up a night perhaps with some refreshments and some cards?

Welcome aboard, :biggrin1:

I can't help with Toronto but I'm sure some of our other members will be along to help in short order.

Thanks!

Hope to hear from some local users. I mean the weather is slowly getting better. Means it's patio season soon!

I read the title wrong.
I thought you were talking about (gasp!) the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Surely Toronto has lots of Tobacconist shops around.
Someone will know.

I may live in Toronto but it's all about the habs for me. Lol.

There are a few shops but everything is just way overpriced it seems to me. Wanted to know if there were any small out of the way shops that had some good deals.

Hi Basil:

I deal with a wonderful dealer one block north of the centre of the centre of the universe :thumbup1:

Go one block north of Bloor on Yonge, turn left and go into Thomas Hinds. You can get cigars, pipes, tobacco, humidors, lighters, lessons on rolling cigars, you name it.

Great place

Best,

- John

Since getting into pipes I don't smoke many cigars anymore, although I still have humidors filled with them:001_smile

I buy all my pipe tobacco in the USA, much cheaper, much better selection.

Pipes I commission from various artisans.

My favorite vendors are Rich at 4noggins and smokingpipes.com

I mainly smoke McClellands Virginias and Syrian mixtures. My favorites tobaccos are Aurora, McCranie's red ribbon, 5100 and 3 Oaks Syrian.

The best shop in Toronto is probably Thomas Hinds but pricing is high, and the staff isn't very pipe-knowledgeable.

Without trying to derail the thread, what has your experience been like in Ontario? I have pretty much given up buying across the 49th because the duties and taxes more than make up the difference in price.

I like Hinds. Partially agree in that they are more cigar oriented but I have always had good, knowledgeable service and their pipe blends are so good, they are probably illegal in some of the more conservative provinces and states :biggrin1:

Two great sources in Toronto.

Julius Vesz is a world renowned Pipe Maker. His shop is in the lobby level of the Royal York Hotel.

I usually travel down to the USA once or twice a year so I just use my duty-free allowance of 200 grams; and my wife's, and anyone travelling with me. I can usually bring back 8-12 tins. The US vendors are a pleasure to deal with and they are extremely knowledgeable.

I also make it a habit to use other peoples allowance when they go down, if they aren't using it; I just ship to their location. You gotta love duty free allowances.

The few times I went to Thomas Hinds they had a kid working the tobacco counter that didn't even smoke a pipe. Maybe I'm fussy, but when I shop at a specialty store I expect the staff to be experts in their field.
