View Full Version : I'd buy it, but not for that much.

Extreme boredom tonight, and probably a personal record for most B&B posts in one day.

Another thread brought this to mind. There are still a number of vintage items I'd like, but the hitch is that I wouldn't pay anything near what they seem to go for. If I want them, I'll have to start haunting antique stores and flea markets again, hoping for a lucky find, rather than competing with other B&Bers on eBay.

Vintage Razors:

Schick G2 injector. Supposedly has a 14k gold handle. I need some more information so that if I find one, I can be sure of distinguishing it from a gold plated G3.
Darwin, almost any kind. Trouble is, even if the seller doesn't know what he's got, these look like they should be expensive.
Double Ring. Actually two recent threads reminded me of this, the fellow who got one for $1.50, and the one who just paid over $425.00.
Barbasol. These always seem to go for at least $10 more than I'm ready to pay at the moment.

Vintage Soaps:

Yardley. I'm sure it's great, but the prices I've seen have been insane.
Vintage Williams. I got one puck with a couple of shaving mugs, and it was quite good. If I can find more at about Col. Conk's prices, I'll get it.
Vintage Old Spice. Got one puck, and it is a favorite. Might be willing to pay MWF refill prices for another, if I could find it for that.

And it would be nice to get one of those blue or black Old Spice mugs to complement my white ones, but the last one I saw went for $80. That's just too much.

Anyone else have a wish list like this? You'll buy it, but not at the going rate?

My short list:

+yes on the G2. I got a bad feeling it comes in the exact same case as the G3.
a toggle. Just ain't gonna happen unless I luck into one locally.

Even antique stores have wised up to razors having value. I paid more for a silver Tuckaway today than I normally would have paid (it did have the original shipper and the cloth bag, which helped me justify it).

I've seen single, banged up razors for $45+ in shops where, a year ago, they would have been maybe $2 or $4 each. Razors in cases (even mismatched) seem to be starting around $50.

Fortunately (???), my RADitis is a lot more focused now than it was even a year ago. I can pass by a lot of things now that I would have bought before.

As for my wish list, it's still pretty long and I'm willing to pay a reasonable amount. Would love to have:

A double-ring.
A Richwood in a good case.
A few of the late-1800s Kampfes/early 1900s Kampfe sets.
One or two of the more unique Gillette sets.
Gems - for some reason, I love their cases. Would love to get a couple of nice tinned sets from the late 1800s.

Been outbid on several Old Spice mugs with unused or slightly used soap. Just can't seem to justify the price...

Those are great items but just a bit out of my range.

It's not vintage, but a Feather All Stainless. I will have one eventually, but they are too dear right now.
