I am about to make my 1st DE razor purchase and would like to solicit opinions as to which razor I should go with? I read all sorts of good things about the HD. Will the extra heft of the voluptous 38C be a benefit, or.....
Thanks!

Hard to say - I don't think anyone here on B&B actually has the new Merkur in hand yet...

I don't think anyone has gotten a test ride from the new razor yet. The HD or the long handle classic are good and reliable choices. I cannot see a problem if you want to order the 38c, its just a very small "unknown-untested" factor to consider.

As the others have said, the 38C is brand spankin' new, and to my knowledge, no one has it yet to have given any feedback.
I have an HD and the heft of it is plenty - also, I have large hands, and the size of the HD handle is more than enough...no problems on this end (especially that it's best to hold it by the bottom of the handle anyway).
I'm sure if you go for the HD or the 38C, you will be more than pleasantly surprised.
Good luck - let us know what you choose.
Good advice- if you can not wait- then the tried and true HD- but if you wait until a review then the 38c might work... since you are starting.... maybe the HD ... but the 38C looks so nice... hmmmm AND NOW YOU KNOW what RAD is
Get one now- and you will eventually buy the other next.. then the Slant.. and then.....

The true B&B answer...and while you are at it get the classic and long handle. See what razor feels best in your hand.

I have a 38C in my grubby mitts  . I'll let you know how it shaves tomorrow. It is a seriously big hefty razor compared to the other Merkur non-adjustables. The blade gap is wider than I anticipated as well so it may give a fairly aggressive shave. It is very similar in size and weight to the Futur but obviously very different looking.

Do let us know what you think. Mind you I have just ordered the Muehle open comb razor - I have an HD.

Its very different any other razor I own so it will be interesting to compare it. I will definitely post a review tomorrow.

My first was a 23c. In fact, I have bought several from Leesrazors.com and given the following as gifts: (1) Merkur 23c (2)prorazo pre/post cream (3)prorazo green tube shave cream (4) box of feathers, derbys and merkurs and (4) a vulfix brush. What a gift eh?
The 23c had the nice long handle like the new merkur (sort of) and when paired with a feather blade, does just right for me everytime. (no razor burn, no nicks or cuts)
The new merkur is supposed to have the long handle but more weight.
Dont worry too much about that first razor, in a VERY short time... you will have several razors.

If this is your first DE purchase, I would say that the logical thing to do is buy a Merkur HD. It is easily the most popular and best reviewed DE in the world. I have an Merkur HD, a Merkur Progress, a Merkur Futur, a Gillette Aristocrat, a Gillette Adjustable, along with a few other DEs. The Merkur HD is, in my view, the best of them all.
My advice is to get an HD. If the new Merkur gets good reviews, then by all means get one. I plan to.
For the record, I love all my Merkurs. Each is great in its own way. But you really can't beat the HD.
Good luck.

I cant seem to find a Merkur HD to buy in the UK, which of the Futur and Vision would be better for a novice DE shaver.
