What do you think, a special ink by Noodlers made for B&B and labeled as such. Either Bulletproof or not, any interest ????
To get this going 144 bottles of 1 color will need to be ordered. Noodlers is sold in a 3 oz bottle and the price would be around 12.00 per bottle plus shipping and a small fee for packing. a donation would be made to B&B for every bottle sold. This will be run as a Group Buy.
Please vote in the poll as to the color.

This is excellent news. I would love to see a rich blue ink offered that is at least Eternal. I know I would probably be up for at least two bottles of the blue.
Would I be off base to see color samples offered when the decision is made on what ink?
Cant wait to see what is picked.
BTW, Noodlers Zhivago is almost a dead on ringer for BRG, I have both and can hardly tell the difference.

Wow, that's a really cool idea :thumbup1:
You can count me in, but I'd prefer pretty much anything but red. Blue sounds nice, so does an aqua black combo, more aqua than black. Personally I prefer the more bulletproof inks Noodler's puts out since I use them in hostile environments (university chemistry/other science labs).

Although Bulletproof B&B Blue does sound like a cool color, I'd prefer non-bulletproof

I would buy one to support this venture. Blue or black.

Sounds awesome! I'd be in for at least two bottles. I like the muted blue option, but there are a whole lot of blues out there. Perhaps something different would be an easier sell. As for bulletproof or not, I don't really mind either way.

We should consider getting this stuff in the eye-dropper bottle with the nifty little freebie eye-dropper pens that Noodler's often includes with their inks.
I like the first option and think that the other colours aren't as great for an everyday use ink.

I would be up for a bottle no matter what you finally decide on. Excellent price!
I would strongly prefer not bullet proof.
As far as colors, preference-wise, I am probably "none of the above." I would love a pure black, very dark--without blue--with either green or red overtones. Something like NI Zhivago, only not bullet proof!
Th BRG might be okay, too. Especially if it like the NI reformulated, not the original, vintage Army green. That is, I would want more true green with little olive to it! Darker is better!
Thanks so much B for working on this.
Great stuff Brian- thanks for doing the legwork on this. I will take a couple of bottles no matter how the colour decision comes out. I will vote for the B+B Blue but I also like Channing's suggestion of a velvety black. MB's Racing Green is a wonderful colour and I stocked up on it when I heard that it was going out of production.
I hope that we can get this up and running!

In my case, I prefer non-bullet proof because I get too darn much ink on my hands, on my clothes, and on other items to ever want any to to be hard to get out, much less impossible to get out! I am generally not writing check or anything that requires that something be absolutely indelible. For that matter, what do I care if someone steals and alters a check. It is the bank at risk, not me. I suppose if I were addressing envelopes, bullet proof would be good as well. It is not that I own no bullet proof inks, by the way!
I think other folks may feel that bullet proof inks are more likely to clog fountain pens. That is not something I personally have worried about in the slightest. But is it something one hear's from time to time about Noodler's in particular. I personally really like Noodler's inks. This will be fun no matter which color/type is chosen!

I see! I know Noodler's inks seem "sludgier" than other inks I've tried.
If we get this group buy going, I think a blue-black with some very slight tint (I'd be more for a reddish tint than an aqua one) would probably look pretty darn cool.

I do not care about the water test. Actually prefer a big fail there!
The Tsuki-Yo, an ink I know well and aboslutley adore, seems very dark in that OPs photo in that link. I wonder id that means this NI blue looks even lighter in person. Oh how I envy you. My backwards hospital wont allow blue ink, for no good reason at all. 75% of the physicians I work with use blue, but the Nurses arent allowed too. When asked, the manager actually said "because I said so" No policy was found, and threats of writeups if blue ink continued to be used by the nursing staff.

I like the idea of a black with a red or aqua tint. I'm just having a problem picturing it.
By the way, on the topic of black v. blue in professional settings, I had a discussion once with my "superior" and was told that black was professional. Then a co-worker (very intelligent and experienced person) that one of the points of using non-black inks was to instantly tell between copies and originals. When I brought that up, the problem with blue ink went away. I've even used Visconti turquoise on official documents!

This thread inspired me to use my MB BRG this weekend!!!
Yeah the whole blue vs black in my setting of the hospital is ridiculous. Now back in the day, scanners/copiers could never pick up blue or any color inks properly other than black. This is why black was used. In recent times however, the copy/scanning technology has become so advanced that people use blue to differentiate between the original and the copy. As I had said before, 75% of the doctors use blue, and there are a few ER docs that use purple just for this reason. The fact that the nurses are told to use black "because we said so" with no proof of reasoning is bogus. Just another reason im pretty dissatisfied at the current hospital im at.
I did get to squeek in 2 weeks of Bay State Blue though before the hammer fell :P

Maki-e pens can be meant more as a functional piece of art rather than something you write with. There are videos on the web of the people who make that artwork, and it looks like it takes years of practice as well as plenty of skill. It doesn't surprise me in the least that well-known artists can command prices like that for their work.
Not that I'd ever buy one, but they're fascinating to look at.

The ink w/ pen thing is only in selected 4.5 ounce bottles. Sounds like this group buy is going to consist of 3 ounce bottles. Also, the pens included are not the Noodler's piston fill pens (flex or otherwise) and are instead usually Platinum Preppys that have been converted to eyedropper fill. There are a couple inks that come with non-platinum pens, but they're about the same quality.
If we were able to get Nathan to do a 4.5 ounce bottle and flex pen thing, it would likely cost somewhere in the range of $30 to $35 a pop plus shipping.

I do not want to break up the thread on side points and I understand brianw's (the guy that got me back into fountains and more into inks, BTW--Brian, you enabler, you! :001_smile) re let's keep it simple and develop a relationship with Nathan T, before we get complicated! But I wanted to stike while the "iron was hot" on a couple of points while they were in mind--at least my mind!
First, I think Noodler's has a "Red-Black" ink. Does anyone know how it compares to the "Black Swan in Austrailian Rose"? Does it have the same red around the edges properties? Or is it just a rather even shade of black and red with little, if any, say, shading?
Second, I seem to be obsessed with the "Zhivago" lately, which is a green-black, but much more black than green, and different feel than say, the Noodler's "Air-Corp Blue-Black," which I would say has quite a bit more green in it. "Air-Corp" may be my favorite Noodler's ink that I have more than a small sample of. Very distinctive. Versatile. Old-school looking, but not so much so that it would look funny. So I am liking the idea of a tint in a black or blue-black base. Air-Corp may be may favorite ink, period, aside from several Iroshizukus, a brand which consistently seems to impress me the more I use any particular of its "expressions."
Third, Groat is correct about the way Nathan usually does the included pen. I was consciously thinking in terms of going outside that usual Noodler's approach. For one thing, I do not think I need 4.5 oz of any ink! (Except maybe highligher ink!) And, I can make my own Platinum Preppy eye droppers, and have. Further, I realize those flex tip pens are a big step up from the usual Noodler's freebee, but given the usual Bager and Blade "branded" items, $30-35 does not seem like that much money. I would leap at that one in order to get the pen, but I do not know how many folks would have that level of knowledge and/or interest.
I also do not have enough experience to know whether more costly/more exclusive items are more likely to be more popular and/or to contribute more to B&B, or not. Someone has to run the distribution of these--although perhaps Noodler's/Luxury Brands will. If it is one of us who has to, we might as well make it "worth their while."
In any event, brianw is probably right to kick this off with a less ambitious offering!
Again, sorry to hijack the thread. I just wanted to get some thoughts down for the future before I forgot them!

Thanks to you, as always, Brian, for "going the distance" for B&B members.
We will probably create some ink addicts through this program, which will be good for future offerings.
If folks are like me, and the price is right, as seems likely, they will buy at least one bottle of every B&B offering that comes along. There are only so many shaving brushes I am interested in buying and using and/or can afford. But my "appetite" for inks seems to be limitless!
Must be fun working with Nathan T! You will have to tell me about that some time!

I used to work with a girl that had just gotten her teaching degree. We had a major argument one night about her stance on right answers.
She claimed that she would never tell a student that an answer was wrong because that was "mean". She would tell the student that the answer was "unacceptable".
I said "So, 2+2=5 isn't wrong?".
She replied that it was mean to say wrong and that she would tell the student that it was an "unacceptable answer". I said "So, it's not wrong?". She said, "It is, but it's mean to tell them that".
Guess who hasn't gotten a teaching job after two years.

My wife works with some of those types of teachers, they were very adept in the art of cover and concealment during the interview process thus they got a job. I could never be a teacher because I see what they endure; the endless Sally failed a test because you didn't teach her, never mind the fact that she never does homework or the Billy can't read because the evil teacher that spends $5000 of her own money on classroom supplies didn't get a book he wanted, that happened last year, and the $5k is probably low but she loves her job and it's our way of giving back because we can afford to.
My solution would be red ink everything and detention all around or pushups all around. We've gotten to soft on learning, the guys I hung with jocks and nerds alike were smart, I see some of the kids my son hangs with today and I'm like wow I'm never going to retire.

I cannot tell whether you have enought folks interested for a "go" or not, Brian. What are your thoughts? Not that it is going to affect my ridiculous AD for inks, which I fully blame you for!
Also, I mark up drafts with green ink generally. Kind of a medium green. Shows up really well for corretions. "Amazon" by Caran d'Ache in case anyone is that interested. I do find red ink marking up someone else's work, particularly when there is a lot of it, to be a little jarring, and I, myself, do not want to look like I have gone overboard in making changes.
It is wholly psychological, but I think I would advocate a color other than red for marking up or correcting anyone of any age's work. In the old days didn't editors use blue pencils to mark up/edit copy? If so, I wonder why blue was used? Surely red pencil would have been as available blue pencil.

I'd bet he will. I have a couple of Noodler's website exclusive inks ("Dumas Tulipe Noire" from the Fountain Pen Network and "Legal Lapis" from Pendemonium) and they both have cool custom labels.

Since I dropped the bottle on the carpet (and yes, I could hear it wailing plaintively "OOOHHH NOOOOOOOO") I immediately tossed it in the shower and began washing it down and applying soap. Somehow it worked, and I think because it never dried.

Information on my ink supplier's website is that if you mix a bulletproof ink with some non-BP noodlers, the BP qualities are eliminated. That may help.

The chemistry of bulletproof ink is that it binds with cellulose like in paper. It also binds with cotton and will not come out as cotton is made up of cellulose.
Actually most of Noodler's ink is not bulletproof. Yes it more resistant to water than many inks but it can face and be washed out. Many vendors insinuate that all Noodler's inks are Bulletproof or bulletproof like. If the BOTTLE does not say bulletproof it is NOT bulletproof. The Eternal series are fade resistant and, if my memory serves me, they are bulletproof or nearly so. I almost exclusively use Bulletproof inks in all my pens.
I don't work for them but have been a customer for several years.
Cheers

Again, I think what saved me is that the Polar Brown did not have time to set, or dry on the carpet. I pretty much threw it in the shower, sprayed with water, and began adding soap. Even then, it was not easy.
