View Full Version : The name's Spice, Old Spice.....

So I was wondering how the scent of the current classic Old Spice that P&G sells compares to the Shulton scent. Any body used both?
I really wish they still made the Old Spice shaving soap. I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Mama Bear's has a version of it, but I can't find it anywhere on the site. I'll need to try the Old Spice shave cream that I found on the reviews.
While we're on the topic of the classic OS AS, is there anyway to reduce the burn of this stuff? I normally mix AS Balm with an alcohol based AS to reduce the burn, but I don't want to do anything to taint or tame the scent of the Old Spice.

Oh lord. You've just opened up a can of worms.
There are those that say (and I agree) that the old Shulton formula (as well as the current Shulton formula OS from India) is very different to the current P&G formula. The current P&G stuff skews more floral and peppery than both vintage and current versions of the Shulton, which has a creamier, deeper note with more noticeable amber. But there are also who say it's all psychosomatic and the formulas (and aromas) are identical.
Mama Bear's version is called Aged Spice. It's on her website in stick form. She might have lost some of the website data in her recent fire, but I don't know for certain.
You could dilute the aftershave with water to reduce the burn. I've added menthol to some of mine and it makes no difference though.

So are there any companies who still sell the original Shulton Old Spice aftershave?

You can get the Indian product that's still made to the Shulton recipe via Ebay or WestCoastShaving.
Or you can scout Ebay for the vintage American OS product, of course.

The version made in India is close to the old Shulton after shave, as is the generic knockoff made by Vi-Jon labs and sold as "Yacht Club" or the Rite-Aid house brand.
Besides the excellent Mama Bear Aged Spice shaving soap, Prairie Creations has a version that's worth trying if you are a tallow fan.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the $1.60 drugstore brand. It's a very soapy/spicy aroma.

I agree that there is a difference between the PG and Shulton versions of Old Spice. I have both but my PG example is the old glass bottle version, which I happen to think smells different from the current plastic bottled offering.
The difference is most pronounced in the aftershave versions. As mentioned there is a more peppery note to the PG version whereas the Shulton has more carnation to it. The ViJohn aftershave is more like the PG aftershave version in the glass bottle except it has more of a bergamot note to it.

I have the original Shulton in glass bottles (a stash). P&G in glass bottles (one set) and wound up with some P&G in plastic, full size as well as travel. Both my wife and I agree there is a difference in the three. Given my (I should say, "our") stash of vintage, I've not tried the Indian formula and can't speak to that. Estate sales are the best place to pick up vintage shaving stuff.

To my nose the American ones (P@G and the off brands that various stores sell) and the one made in India all have different scents to them. The Indian one burns quite a bit more for me. But I like a good aftershave burn!
As far as scents go I like them all about equally. Although I haven't had the plastic bottled P@G version yet.
Speaking of spice. Does anyone remember Gillette Storm Force? It had really spicy scent to it. Wish I could still get it. If anyone remembers it and knows of anything like it I would really like to know what it is.

I have some of both. If I had some decanting supplies I would send you a sample of each for your nose to determine any differences. But, I don't have any..sorry to tease you. I will say they do smell a bit different. Is it because formulas changed or because it got better with age? I guess in 30 years if my P&G bottle is still here, I'll be able to tell you. Until then.....

Just 'spitballin' here, but the common theme that I see in a lot of these posts is that the "old" version smells different than the "new" version, and that it is still possible to get the "old" version second hand...
I know that, if improperly stored, the fragrance of cologne/perfume canand does change.
somebody should try "aging" the "new" version... maybe some of the alcohol needs to be evaporated and the notes would deepen.
**I know nothing about...perfumery(is that a word?) and I have never compared Old to New... just my 2-cents

There's also a school of thought that even short term storage in plastic can alter a scent, and that the effect is so rapid that decanting back to glass can cause it to change back in short order!
Add to this mix that most manufacturers (according to ClubmanRob, IIRC) make slight changes to account for the different properties of the plastic bottle when they switch from glass to plastic, Shulton changing the formula at least once even before the P&G takeover, body chemistry, nostalgia, the subjective nature of scents in general and the current phase of the moon, things get murky fast.

TG is right on target about Mama Bear's version. I just got my order in on Friday and had me an Aged Spice morning today. It goes well with the 'knockoff" Old Spice A/S from Family Dollar.

Yikes! my head hurts now.
I see what you mean about a can of worms.
I can't wait till mama bear's has it back in stock.
Thanks for the feedback guys. I guess there is a big difference.

Yesterday I got two tubes of OS cream from India, and I really really like it.
Good lather and retro smell.
I've smelt the original way back when but can't remenber it.

the real question here is why would you want to smell like any one of those formulations?:a49:

Wait - why would you want to cut down on the burn? That's the best part of Old Spice in the morning!

Men either smell like pirates or like bookkeepers.
Personal preference I guess.
The ship picture is just a hint.

There's also Maharajah Shave.
I've got a bottle of the Vi-Jon OS knockoff (Family Dollar $1.60) and it's totally different than the P&G OS which I also have.
The knockoff is "soapy" and "dry". The P&G is cloyingly sweet and baby-powder smelling.
