Excessive toe wear

I have noticed that a lot of vintage razors have significant toe wear compared to the rest of the blade.

What causes this ? i.e. what mistake(s) were being made during honing
Hoping to learn something as it seems to be a common mistake.

And as a secondary question - are these best to avoid or is there a cunning way of restoring them - maybe leaving them as a corner smile:001_smile

In some honing manuals, the old ones, they where showing that you should hone by doing an arc using the toe to travel most of the distance on the hone. It ends up in eating more meal at the toe.

A smiling blade, in particular at the toe, is a desirable blade configuration for many shavers and barbers. For that reason, what many of you consider to be a honing error, was in fact a deliberate alteration.
