We got about 4 weeks til we need to draft.
I am hoping for 10 teams. If the interest isn't there by the 2nd week of March then I might nix the idea.

Honestly, I don't know anything about baseball (by that, I mean anything about the players, not the sport itself), but I'm depressed that the football season is over, so you can count me in. Maybe this will give me some interest in baseball this year.

Walter Sobchak
02-24-2011, 08:44 PM
Sure, I'll join in!

I usually do one Baseball league. I'd love to do it with fellow B&Bers!

Whether it's a "fun" league or a "prize" league, I'm cool with it as long as the ante's within reason.

blary54
02-25-2011, 01:55 PM
So far I count 8 people interested. We could do a 12 team league too. Where are we going to play through? Ive always done my fantasy football through yahoo.

Walter Sobchak
02-25-2011, 02:00 PM
I prefer ESPN's interface, but Yahoo's good too.

I'm usually not into 12 team leagues in other fantasy sports, but I guess baseball's well suited since it has such a large player pool (assuming we're doing AL & NL).

blary54
02-25-2011, 02:23 PM
Im fine with whatever. Last year played one fantasy football league with ESPN and took a while to get used to the interface. But when I did I liked it.

I'm only familiar with yahoo so if that works for everyone I'll stick with it.
I like 12 teams because too few and the teams get stacked but I was unsure of interest so I think a minimum of ten will work. As for a prize/pay suggestions are welcome and I am generally game for whatever.

More than 12 teams and the rosters get pretty thin, which IMO makes it hard for anyone other than hardcore baseball fans to play. Fewer than 10 teams and the teams definitely get too stacked which is boring, frankly.

As to the prize issue. I don't know the legalities of an informal pay to play league and its place on B&B. That might not be OK. If it is, though, it might be cool to make the prizes shaving related. Like a gift card to Bullgoose, or even to be so bold as to break up the prizes into 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and have them be, say, 1st place = a shaving item(s) worth $75, 2nd place = a Bronze Level Contribution to B&B in your name, and a Copper donation for third place...something like that. I don't know, I'm just throwing some ideas around. Obviously we'd have to work out the math and legalities, but it would be fun, I think, to somehow have B&B benefit too.

If you're going to be the Commish, it should be whatever you're comfortable with doing. I know it can be a pain in the butt to be the commissioner, and this should be about everyone enjoying themselves.

Live draft or auto?

I would hope for live, but it's pretty hard to get twelve guys in different timezones with different family obligations all at their PCs at the right time.

FWIW- any nights after 9PM is good for me. Before that I'm either working or deeply immersed in the beautiful chaos that three preschoolers bring to my life as a dad.

I agree with it being to difficult to get everyone together. Plus it just takes so dang long. If we do an auto I'd be in. Sorry if I am being too picky.

On the drafts that are taking too long, I usually draft for as long as I can, then I set it to auto-pilot and split. Just make sure you set your list of rankings prior to draft day.

So we got ten. If anybody wants out let me know.
I am thinking about the prize thing. I am ok with shaving related or simply a split with 1st, 2nd and 3rd receiving something. I would like to hear from others about their pay league preferences or if they don't like it at all. From my experience this helps keep people active in the league. I will check with the mods to make sure a pay to play is ok. Let me know.

If it becomes pay (actually monetarily), I don't know if I will join. I am already in 1 pay league and it takes a lot of prep for it. This was my for fun league.

If it's just a prize, then I would still be interested. Just wanted to let you know.

Yes, totally agree.

Thanks for setting this up!

Also, I should ask, is it going to be basic scoring categories?

Sheesh, I played in a league last year where the commish put in five or six extra scoring cats. Some were redundant such as getting a double or triple would earn a point, but there was also a scoring category for extra base hits, so you got another point on top. Some were just weird, like plate appearances, or pitch-counts (I can't remember if that was it or not, but they were stats that were really only for hardcore sabermatricians). It was a little too complicated and difficult to prepare for.

could always do Gift Certificates to WCS or Bullgoose. 10 bucks a team would split 50 - 25 -25???? Cheap yet something I think we can all relate with! LOL

JBagKY
03-01-2011, 10:10 AM

wolfrb
03-03-2011, 08:35 AM
I was thinking 10 or 15 so that will work. I am open to the gift certificate idea as well as a check or a bronze contribution. Any other suggestions?
1st 60%
2nd 20%
3rd 20%

or
1st 50%
2nd 25%
3rd 25%

I may find some other type shaving related things of my own to sweeten the pot. We'll see.

Awesome idea. Even at $5 a team with 10 teams...

1st-place = $25.00 gift cert
2nd = $15.00
3rd = $10.00

I feel that if we're going to include prizes in this league, maybe we should do $12 or $15 a team and make a modest contribution to B&B. After all, this forum's why we're all here.

$12 each would allow for first place to get a $50 GC, $25 GC for two runners up, and a $20 contribution from the Commish to B&B from the league. If you guys don't like the idea of matching prizes for second and third place, I'm sure Phil @ Bullgoose would work something out. He's cool like that.

That said, I'm not the Commish, and this league wasn't my idea. I just wanted to point out that it would be pretty easy to do if everyone was in agreement.

I'm excited to play either way!

I could do earlier like 9 on a weekend but didn't know if everybody will be up. Please let me know. I agree that 3 prizes and a donation would be a good idea.
$15 per person could be
$70 1st- $40 2nd- $20 3rd- and a $20 B&B donation.

Walter Sobchak
03-09-2011, 05:58 AM
Sometimes Roto is easier for the guys who have breakneck schedules, like me.

I like both formats and this is going to be my only league this year, so I don't care which.

I can spare a few minutes each day to double check my roster's set.

The big thing for me is getting a draft time that I can attend. I don't mind missing the second half of the draft, but those first eight or so picks are pretty important, IMO.

If I get the first pick and miss out on Pedro Martinez, I'll be crying in my Proraso.

So either this Saturday in the am or the 26th. I was leaning towards the
26th hoping two more people would join. I am also aiming for $15 a team for a split of 70,30,20(based on 8 teams) by the 23rd. I may open a few more roster spots and put some maximum innings in effect to help offset the stacked teams we will have.

They are definitely stacked! I ended up ranking the top 100 players, but in my mind I was thinking of a 10 team league (out of habit). I think I overvalued a few guys, and ended up with a few I, never would have taken. Hopefully it can be fixed in a trade.

Getting excited for opening day!

I ranked my top 100...should have excluded players too. I got a pretty good team, but I also got Wainwright and Chase Utley. For some reason I cannot drop Utley. Anyone want Utley? :glare: However I got Cabrera and Carlos Gonzalez. IMO both first round picks.

Let's start the Trade Offers!

I could use an upgrade at 2nd base, I think.

Anyone interested in Jason Bay for a 2nd Baseman?

Wow, you're loaded up at 2B. Three of the top five second basemen in baseball.

It's my first time with a team. I'm slowly figuring out how this works.

Looks like you are doing some serious remodeling! I am still working on the Roto vs H2H. Big strategy difference, I think.

Roto = Don't Panic, be patient, let the stats come.

If my team still stinks in June (and it probably will), then I'll start to panic.

Who dropped Ichiro? You a crazy man whoever you are.

I can't believe I got Utley and Yovani Gallardo off of waivers.

I got Martin Prado, Jay Bruce, and Chad Billingsley. Some guy apparently isn't very patient with his players....works for me.

Produce or die. Instant gratification is not soon enough.

Ha...part of the fun is finding that jewel in the rough. However just remember that the season is a long one.

Agreed. Congrats to the winner! I thought for a minute I might catch you, but your team was too good!

I had a lot of fun with this. Thanks everybody for playing! 3rd place? I'll take it for my rookie season as a manager.
