I'm about to turn my first brush and am wondering if a ferrule is really necessary.
Ferrules look good, might even help speedup or facilitate brush assembly on automated machine lines, but do they really serve a purpose for the brush itself?
Looking at several high end brands, their use seems to be 50/50.
Any thoughts or experiences would be welcome.

yes i believe they do serve a purpose ,the ferrule protects the base of the knot. Mostly used on wood handles in case water ever penetrated the handle the knot would not get moldy good luck my friend

Thanks MentalFloss (I was going to use your initials at first, but when I saw what they were, I used the whole name:lol:)
Anyone know if they are actually rings or little cups?

The three that I have taken apart (a Muhle, an Omega and an Altesse/Kent) were cups.

Thanks GB:thumbup1:
I wonder how effective coating the inside of the hole with epoxy and letting it dry completely (before gluing in the knot) would be?
