View Full Version : Scent to pair with Aqua Velva

I finally went BBS tonight and did it with the cheapest products in my den, including Real Shaving Co. and Aqua Velva. I love the way it feels on my face and may be sticking with it for a while as my go-to A/S. But I prefer a more refined scent for work and evenings out. Can anybody suggest a "3-Ts" cologne or EDT that might lay well over the AV, but would also be suitable for the office?

Not a Three-T's scent, but Rive Gauche is very compatible with AV Blue.

When it covers up so much (see my sig line), why use anything else with it?!
Seriously, when I use AV, I go without any cologne. Perhaps something citrusy??

Yeah, to the point made just above, you would have to wear quite a lot of something in order to overcome or even get noticed with the AV.
Why not just let the AV stand alone? :w00t:

Because AV alone does not last very long. If you want your scent to last all day, your going to need something in addition to AV. That is unless you are using AV musk; that stuff lasts.

I find Cool Water or C.O. Bigelow Blue very compatable with AV Blue.

How about more AV later in the day? C'mon...the little bottles are three bucks most places.

Cool Water is the one that shines with AV Ice Blue.

Fair point, however, there are some of us that can't tote a bottle of AV around with us to reapply every two hours or so.:tongue_sm

I wouldn't bother. Aqua Velva is a classic scent. Every time I wear it, I get told I smell like someone's father or grand father. :biggrin1:

I consider AV to be one of the classic masterpiece scents. I've told my son and grandsons to get some while the original formula in glass bottles still exists. Otherwise it will be like Old Spice: only a memory of the senior citizens, replaced by a cheap imitation in a plastic bottle. However, to get more life from it and a stronger initial scent I add 1/3 Woods of Windsor aftershave to 2/3 Aqua Velva. Works for me.

I have both glass and plastic of AV and NOS Old Spice and current plastic Old Spice. I certainly don't have the 'nose' that some of you have but I can't tell a difference between either. I had my wife, 40yo son and 37yo daughter do a blind test and neither thought there was any difference. as always YMMV

It depends on your body chemistry AV Ice Blue last on me all day.

I always respect the originators of a scent. When Mennon stopped making Skin Bracer and someone else bought the name/formula I could never be certain it was the original even when it smelled the same. I had run out long since. Likewise Old Spice, now a Procter and Gamble product along with Gillette and Charmin, I figured the smell might be close but the ingredients probably not the Shulton formula. I don't know about Aqua Velva, if the same stuff can be put in plastic as in glass. I know most of the great womens perfumes have been reformulated many times. They are not the same: read Lucca Turin's book.

I like to use C.O. Bigelow Elixir Blue Cologne with Aqua Velva. I think they compliment each other well. Also, AV does not last very long on me whereas the Elixir Blue Cologne lasts for the majority of the day. Bigelow's Blue Body Wash is nice also.
If you can't find C.O. Bigelow products you can also try the "Ocean" cologne at Bath & Body Works. Not as good as Bigelow's but not bad.
Hope that helps!

I never wear a cologne on top of an aftershave splash. I can see doing it if they are the same scent or product line (i.e. Old Spice AS splash and Old Spice Cologne) but even then it seems a bit much. Even AS splashes that aren't generally considered to be "strong" have enough of a scent to clash with just about anything else, especially to those with sensitive sniffers. In other words, just because you don't notice the clash, it doesn't mean others won't. Therefore, for me, trying to pair or "blend" different fragrances is a mistake.
I can't imagine pairing AV with any other scent/cologne, but more power to you if you can pull it off. Besides, AV has a unique, retro scent that is what it is and stands on it's own two legs.

When I wear AV, whether Ice Blue or Musk, I don't wear anything with it. I think it's too strong. AV Ice Blue sticks with me all day; musk well into the night.
