At the risk of this being a very stupid question, is it possible to roll pipe tobacco in a cigarette paper and smoke it like a cigarette (without inhaling of course)? I only ask as sometimes I like to have a quick 5-10 minute smoke and apart from packing a quarter of a bowl or something like that, I thought perhaps rolling a cigarette with pipe tobacco could be a good way to have a quick smoke.

+1 but don't expect it to taste like a pipe.
If you like to roll or make your own, there are several pipe tobaccos that make a very good cigarette. Areo's wont work very well at all or any blend that contains much cavendish tobaccos. The mechanics are different. That and the influence of the paper changes the nature of the smoke. That being said a Va shag is a Va shag and can be good in either pipe or cigarette.

Very well said. I do this quite often and enjoy it, Carter Hall is my favorite.

You will want to use a shag cut.

I would actually recommend a smaller bowled pipe with a quick easy burning tobacco for a short smoke. Also there are many blends that take relights very well, they don't go off like cigars can. Smoke what you have time for, cork and pocket your pipe and relight on your next break. There some pipe smokers who do this deliberately to enjoy the way this develops the smoke.

I actually had a pipe made for this purpose by Chris Askwith.

It's a mini-stack, 15mm chamber diameter. It's the ultimate shag pipe.

They were very popular 40-50 years ago...

They are called shape-reformed pipes...

see page 2 of the Pipe Dan catalogue... http://www.finepipes.com/gallery/pipe-dan-catalog.html

I have a Sevinelli coffee break that smokes G&H Dark Birdseye exclusively and does it very well. The stinger removed easily and it passes a cleaner well, smokes a real treat. Depending on how I pack and smoke it, it can be a quick 15 minute smoke or last a good 30-40 minutes. Pretty close to what the Holmes of literature smoked, as opposed to most film interpretations. Smaller cobs like the pony express do very well in this regard as well. The only problem with them is that the bottoms usually need to be mudded or screened until the gaps cake up and I keep breaking those $#@@*& yellow plastic stems. But they do smoke well and are incredibly light.

You very much can, I have.

It's more of a replacement for a cigarette than a pipe though.

Thank you for the replies, I'll have a play around with some different blends and see how it goes.

If you wish to do this, then I would recommend getting some Gawith Hogarth Kendall Shag, Kendall #7, or Dark Birdseye. This are shag cut tobaccos that lend themselves fairly well to rolling. I've rolled the #7 before, and I can tell you that it makes a pretty stout cigarette.

When I smoked cigarettes I used to toss a bit of a very mildly cased VA pipe tobacco into my Virginia shag cigarette tobacco for an extra something.

I think any Virginia shag or ribbon would work. Latakia would probably taste like camel dung.

A lot of people are doing this since taxes have been raised on hand rolling tobacco. The taxes on pipe tobacco haven't gone up last I heard.

As a side note; D&R Tobacco still makes their Three Sails, Ryback, and Ryback Gold in the original shag cuts, but they are sold (and taxed) as pipe tobaccos.
