VDH on Amazon is showing new soaps for March , Just thought I would share -- Happened to be looking for their Glycerin soap and saw the new stuff
Here's a link. http://www.amazon.com/Van-Hagen-Luxury-Scented-4-5-Ounce/dp/B004L4AMIG/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&s=beauty&qid=1297915670&sr=8-8
The windmill on the box and soap remind me of the Muhle windmill. Wonder if there is a connection?

Over 10% glycerin; contains shea, mango and cocoa butters; sounds like a good soap for winters.

Looks interesting. I went ahead and pre-ordered the scented and unscented soaps. I also stumbled across a VDH "luxury" badger brush, sporting the Muhle-ish windmill. For $15 bucks, I added it as well. Now I just have to wait until the end of March:glare:

That is a good price, I've seen apothecary mugs selling for more than the whole set. I wonder how the brush is?

If it is the same brush that they send out if you write them about your boar brush shedding (too lazy to bring up the old posts), then I suggest passing on it. That thing was crazy floppy (and I use a vulfix).

I was curious about this newly listed product and the "Muhle" looking windmill so I emailed VDH and here's the reply:
Hi Michael,
The new soap is part of an upscale line being launched. Amazon will be the first to carry the product. The new line has a badger brush, acrylic shave brush and razor stand (razor not included), a ceramic apothecary shave bowl (new soap fits perfectly!) and two new shave soaps. The shave soaps are 3.5 oz vs the current 2.5 oz and are similar in formulation BUT they have a higher percentage of the ingredients that set our product apart from the others - ie. glycerin, shea/mango/cocoa butter. Both bars have over 10% glycerin! The two bars are almost identical in formulation (same goodie package), the scented bar being opaque white and the unscented being transparent. The scented bar has a very nice fresh-citrusy-woody note. It is of cologne quality. We manufacture all of our soaps in Liberty Hill, Texas.
Hope this helps! Thanks for writing.
Marty van der Hagen
Should prove interesting. Think I'll have to get the whole thing, i.e. mug/brush/soap, and see what they got.

That brush looks incredibly similar, nearly identical in fact, to the C&E-branded EJ Pure Badger that sells for $35 from C&E.

The packaging looks pretty similar to the boxes from Jagger as well. I am going to go out on a limb here and bet that the new VDH badger is an EJ. If so, for $15 it is a very good buy:thumbup1:

I wonder if it's based on a cologne (like the other soaps are Grey Flannel-like)?
Citrus Woodsy? Wow that could be about 100 different colognes.
What's the most popular Citrus Woodsy cologne?
And I have one of those mugs (a white one from Burt's Bees). They are GREAT for melting in a couple pucks of VDH.. Room for the soap and enough room to build the lather right there..

There are enough similarities between the EJ and VDH brushes that you are probably right. I will definately be ordering both soap and brush soon enough.

Whenever you get this stuff, we'll need a full report about how much different it is from current formulation VDH; not just the scent, but the lather characteristics, performance, etc., etc. It'd be good to have some VDH Deluxe on hand so they can be compared back-to-back and directly.

Yeah, I'm also wondering what that's about. Almost identical. Keeping the radar out on this one...
I just did the pre-order on the set for $25, soap, brush, mug and stand (with free shipping). Now the wait sets in.
At the C&E website the brush is still being shown and sold for $35.

I think that set looks like a phenomenal bargain, and I think it is great that VDH is developing a higher-end line in addition to their usual products. I too wonder about the new logo, colors, etc. That logo is close enough to Muhle's to make me scratch my head. Coupled with my strong suspicion that the brush is a Jagger (itself a Muhle Pinsel brand) Pure Badger, I wonder if there is something bigger here than just a few new products. Hmmm, the plot thickens... :001_cool:
Could be nothing, but speculating is fun!

This is an encouraging move by VDH. Hopefully this means semi-premium shave soaps will return to drug and grocery stores.
The ball is in your court now, Old Spice. You've revamped the brand to so it's all about nostalgia and "being a man," so it's time to bring back the shave soap. If you can sell "Deck Scrubbers" you can sell shaving sets with a boar brush and plastic mug.
C'mon guys. You've got Isaiah Mustafa. He can make anything seem cool. You can do it....

one quick look at the van der hagan website explained the the windmill, its has to do with the old family farm in Holland. But then i also read that they are suppliers to many companies overseas and in the US. Which leads me to believe that they could be secret behind some of our favorite soapmakers.

Since I'm steadily reducing my stock of shaving supplies to zero and I'm on my last puck of soap and shave stick, not counting the two "just in case" pucks of Williams, this is perfect timing. Heck, who am I kidding, I'd buy it just for the mug.

Mantic asked the company about this very thing, and they claim that both products lines are going to continue to be made:
van der Hagen Enterprises would like to announce the launch of a new line of upscale shave products. We have had numerous requests from our customers over the years to create a higher end line featuring a badger brush, brush stand and a mug with a fitted soap. The new line will be available on Amazon.com starting March 24th and is being added to Walgreens.com very soon (not sure of the exact date yet). We are planning to show the line to various retail chains over the next year and will keep you updated on our progress.
Our “value line” will not change and will still be sold in the current chains that carry it now. In fact, we are continuing to expand the number of stores that carry this line rapidly.
Following are the items that are included in the new Luxury Line and a brief description:
Badger Brush – 100% badger bristle in a monogrammed smooth black handle with a silver ring.
Apothecary Mug – a monogrammed black ceramic apothecary style shaving mug with a knob handle.
Shave Stand – acrylic shave stand that holds our badger brush and has a slot in which to stand a razor (razors not supplied).
Scented Shave Soap – similar to our current shave soaps in formulation except that it has a higher percentage of the “goodie package” - glycerin, shea butter, mango butter and cocoa butter. Both bars (scented/unscented) have over 10% glycerin. The bar is also 40% larger at 3.5 oz and fits perfectly in the apothecary mug. The scented bar is opaque white and has a very nice fresh-citrusy-woody note (kind of hard to describe). The fragrance is cologne quality.
Unscented Shave Soap – this bar is nearly identical to the scented bar and has the same “goodie package”. It is transparent and fragrance free.
Whether the customer is purchasing our “value” line or our Luxury line, our goal is to provide the best overall value on the market for traditional wet shave products.
Thank You,
The van der Hagen family

I have been playing too much on the Bay and Amazon so I will wait until April and order a bulk order of VDH deluxe and some of their new stuff if the reviews are good.
Just received my VDH Luxury Set today 03/25/11. I received an email from Amazon yesterday telling me it was just shipped. Wow!! One day delivery. Wasn't expecting that. As for the set. Lovely. The brush looks great. The stand for the brush and razor while plastic is better than the ones from Omega and other places. The apothocary mug is black and stylish and the soap barely fits in it. Got one puck with the set. Too late to shave tonight (10:06 PM or 2206 for those of on military time) but I will be using it in the morning. No pictures as I'm not good with that kind of stuff. Really have to learn so I can post sometime. This set is a steal for $25. VDH is really trying here. If you don't have one get one.

Got my 3 pucks yesterday (3/26) and used it this morning. I don't want to come to any conclusions without trying it for at least a week, but I will make the following observations.
1. It fits perfectly in my 70's Old Spice mug. The puck is of a slightly larger diameter at the bottom, and the ribs in the mug hold it nice and snug.
2. It didn't seem to lather that much better than the Deluxe version, but it did so much easier! Less product and less time required to produce a thick, rich lather.
3. Scent is very slight. I have no idea what it reminds me of. I'll get back to you on that.
4. Slick. The lather definitely felt slicker than the Deluxe. The razor glides effortlessly. No skips, drags, irritation, nicks. Two passes with a Tech loaded with a Derby (my benchmark for testing) resulted in a better than DFS, but short of BBS.
I will continue to use the new VDH for a week and see if I come to any other conclusions. As of now, I like it!:thumbup1:
