How good are you? I haven't gotten BBS in 3 days with my left hand. I'm not doing it out of curiosity, either. Here's my reason:

http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab320/adameads/47657f3d.jpg?t=1297775290

That bone pointing up and to the left is the clavicle, and it doesn't belong there.

:lol::blush::angry:

So, any good tips for non-dominant hand shaving?

I'd go with something easy and brainless, like a cart or electric for a few weeks until all healed up.

Or get your significant other to shave you, if you trust them that much!

I started trying to use my left hand to do the left side of my face. After seeing your problem I'm going to keep at it. You never know.

I also love your signature.

A while ago I gave it a try and it just didn't work that well, but I had the choice.

A buddy of mine is a tennis coach, he tore up a bunch of tenants in his right wrist a few years ago. The catch is that he still had to keep coaching, so he learned to use his left hand. It was tough at first, but he still says that it helped him learn a lot about tennis that he had never needed to think about and ultimately improved his right hand skills. So, if nothing else, maybe this can be a good re-learning experience?

I can't even brush my teeth with my left hand let alone trying to shave with it!:ohmy:

It would be an electric for me or somehow try a cart.

Good luck!

Your clavicle doesn't look that good. Have you considered seeking medical attention? :tongue_sm

I did a little bit of shaving with my non-dominant hand yesterday. Slow and cautious, like relearning how to shave. I used what I consider to be a very forgiving blade (Lord). That helped.

Hmmmm. I'll try LH shaving tomorrow. Sounds like weird fun.

I'm very right-handed with blades and such, and never even tried to shave left-handed. Now I realise I'll have to try and keep at it.

Thanks h_h and OP.

I'm left handed, and so far I haven't given it a shot with my right. Maybe I'll try it now, though.

We make using the non-dominant foot a regular part of soccer practice. It does force you to think about what you do. So does teaching others.

I, like most str8 shavers use both hands to avoid contorsions. It was tough at first, but now I'm pretty good at it. I recently discovered that I get most cuts from shaving with my dominant hand. Go figure...

Since I've been straight shaving I've become pretty good with my other hand, but I do need both hands to stretch the skin though.

When I use my DE razor I only use my strong, my right hand, but I can do a complete shave using my DE with the one hand. Taking a look at that X-ray it doesn't look as if you'll be using both hands for awhile. Good luck on the recoup. :thumbup1:

I'm sorry, but I laughed a little

I've played with thought of trying just for the fun of it, but haven't started yet.

I hope your shave hand gets well soon. Just as this guy here:

I have sought medical attention. All 3 ligaments holding the clavicle in place are shredded. If it's going to heal on it's own, it'll do it in 6-8 weeks. My job is to rest, ice, immobilize, tape it. Surgery in 8-10 weeks if not healed on its own.

It feels pretty good. And, I've gotten better at going left handed with my Flare Tip, but nowhere near BBS. Probably SAS, which is fine.

I actually started shaving with a DE when my right, dominant arm was out of order from a work injury. I could not lift weights and needed a new hobby. I found B&B in a wetshaving thread on a fitness forum and took it up, shaving with my off-hand, the left.

It can be done and helps you develop some extra dexterity in your lazy hand. :thumbup1:

This answered a question that I had yesterday and didn't post. Which was how many people shave with the non dominant hand. Now I know it is fewer than I thought. I will try it this weekend and see how difficult it is with my right hand.

My guess would be snowboarding, but there are other ways to blast a clavicle.

SAS is my usual shave anyways. I've tried shaving with my left, but it is a bit time consuming and I get nervous in the difficult areas. But I know that straight shavers make a point at becoming ambidextrous and I can see where being ambidextrous with a DE could even be useful - even with two functioning arms.

Remember, ice is nice.

That would be one of the other ways that I know of. :001_smile

Believe it or not, I would love to hear the story if your up to it. I was a volunteer patroller for a number of years in the Tahoe area and wreck stories are always interesting especially when accompanied by xrays.

Someone should try a 30-day "non-dominant hand shaving challenge."

Maybe 30 days is too long. A week?

At the least, it would involve using your non-dominant hand on the side where you would have to reach across your face. I think I could manage this. For the truly adventurous, non-dominant hand shaving the entire face, like the OP.

Any takers?

Sure.

We're at Snowshoe on Sunday, which was our final day of skiing. We were going to stay at the resort that night, have a nice dinner, then head home early Monday morning. Snowshoe closes at 4:30 because they don't have lights on the main mountain. This occurred at 3:45.

I'm an intermediate skier...greens are cake, blues are more challenging, but I'm confident going down them, and black diamonds are a very good challenge for me. I did two or three black diamonds earlier in the day, and fell once or twice per run. We came back to the hard side of the mountain towards the end of the day, and I was determined to go down all black diamonds. I had done 8 or 9 with no problems at all, actually surprising myself and skiing more aggressively than I thought I could.

The particular slope this occurred on was the final one of the day to try, was icy in the middle third, and powder out on the edges. I was going left (right shoulder facing down hill), I left the icy patch into powder, the inside edge of my left ski caught on the powder, and I fell shoulder first down the hill. Direct hit on the acromion.

I wish I could say it was a true wipeout, but I wasn't going all that fast really. Just a freak accident. It felt like I was shot and stabbed in the shoulder. I think I'm going to be just fine...three days out and I'm sleeping comfortably, can do some active-assisted range of motion exercises, and the bump/swelling is under control.

I told my wife maybe something good would come of this whole experience, and maybe the "First Annual Non-Dominant Hand Shave Challenge" is it.

Thanks for the story. I have personally done that very same thing many times over the years (I tele ski, so trust me, yard sales happen) but dodged the bullet. End of the day accidents always got our attention because they seemed to be mostly bad. I bet that isn't statistically true though, just seemed that way.

I had open rotator cuff surgery to repair some damage about 15 years ago. Not anywhere near as bad as yours. Open surgery is more invasive though so some of the recovery will probably be pretty similar. When starting your PT, make sure to religiously do your PT - not over do. Make PT and ice your religion.

My wife is actually my physical therapist...we had our first session last night at the kitchen table. She's surprised at my range of motion. I'm optimistic that I'm going to be fine without surgery.

And yes, next time I'll know to work te black diamonds in periodically. Doing 10 or so in a row really wore me out, and I'm sure that led to this accident.

I shave the right side of my face with my right hand and the left side of my face with my left hand. I can shave my entire face with my right hand if I have to, but I don't think I could do the same with my left.
