I just bought my first new pipe today. I was previously using a Grabow that was a gift, and it pretty much sucked.

SWMBO bought me some nice tobacco for Valentine's Day, so I went out and upgraded my pipe. I bought a Peterson 106, like this:

I'm pretty excited, but still a total newb. Any words of advice for a fella with a newly acquired PAD (I can feel it already)?

Is that the Aran? All Petersons are good, IMO. My recommendation is to pack gently and smoke slow. Try just a half bowl for the first few smokes. Take your time and enjoy it. Don't draw hard or fast, it really is a leisurely activity. Congratulations. :thumbup1:
What tobacco did you get?

Yep, that's the one.

I got two from SWMBO, an AM Blend, and something called Texas Twist. Today I got a free oz with the pipe purchase. I picked a blend called Kipling's Tail.

How are you set for regular cleaning and maintenance supplies. They don't have to be expensive at all, but a clean well rested pipe is a happy pipe take a look at the GE sticky for detailed info and ask any questions as they occur to you. As far as break in procedure it really depends on how well you're smoking. If you're comfortable smoking a pipe reliably down to the bottom than thats fine, and what I do, If you have difficulty than partial bowls are best. They'll help with building a cake down to the bottom of the bowl, and can give you added packing practice which will help as you build to full bowls.

Edit: I'm a big fan of Petes, very nice smokers once broken in.

Are we going to be smoking pipes in New Orleans? That sounds sweet.

Aran - a good Pete - you found a nice one - I like a straight Peterson as well. Love that fishtail stem. Enjoy!

Your first Pete will always be a special one, the next dozen aren't bad either.

If only that were the case. I'd sire a gold spigot with a Sherlock Holmes meerschaum and be rich, from the offspring

This guy is pretty much the Mantic59 equivalent for pipesmokers. He has a lot of informative videos for those starting out the hobby.

Also (this is kinda hard to find), pick up a copy of "The Ultimate Pipe Book" by Richard Carleton Hacker...it is a must have for anyone who enjoys the fine art of pipesmoking.

Have fun
