Had the first SE shave with a GEM 1912 travel razor. Very smooth I have to say. Need to get used to the different angle so nicked myself a bit but you sort of expect that. Bloody noisy! Nice sound but I thought I was going to wake the house up. I think I can easily get used to SE shaving. I'm assuming the head used on the travel edition is the same as the normal 1912. I've got a Junior and an Ever Ready (hinge down the comb end) to try out too. I've read that the Ever Ready is a little bit more aggressive so I'll leave that one till last.

They are loud little buggers. If you aren't doing hearing damage to yourself, your angle's off
I really prefer the more aggressive SEs. The MMOC gives me close, irritation-free shaves everytime. This is from someone who could only use really mild DEs before I made the switch.

I may be goofy but I have found when I hear noise my angle is not quite deep enough. I flatten the razor a bit more and the sound goes away and it cuts better. :confused1
Please no comments on the goofy part.:w00t:

Just tried an Ever Ready this morning, loaded with a Gem/Pella. Great shave :thumbup1:. Think this one and the Minuteman will be my daily razors. Angle should be easy: just place the flat part of the head flat against your face.

You may think a 1912 is noisy, but some of the old lather catchers are even louder. Must be that huge scoop-like head resonating.

"Sounds" like you're doing it right.:lol::lol:
Welcome to the wonderful world of SE shaving! I've been using SEs just about exclusively for almost a year.
I went looking for one of my DEs the other day...almost couldn't find it, under all of the dust. :biggrin1:

What ever works best for you. I find that when I hold it flat I'm not cutting anything.
I notice that you're in KC...I looked up the Midland theater awhile back and saw that it had been converted to a concert hall. I used to go to the movies there from time to time...beautiful building.

I had my first SE shave last night. When I took my first stroke, it was so loud (compared to DE) that I was sure I had scraped some of my face off. Happily I did not, in fact it was one of my best shaves to date.

I've been using my SE's the last few weeks ( Gem1912, damaskeene and
an MMOC) all of which gave me very fine shaves. :thumbup1:

MMOC is my favorite too. Quieter than a 1912 especially when your angle is correct. I don't even notice the sound anymore.

I've been using my injectors mostly for the last couple of weeks. I think I'll get out my ER 1914 for tomorrow's shave.

The first time I used my GEM lightweight I noticed the same thing. I swore I could actually hear the individual whiskers getting sliced. DE is much quieter in comparison. I like both experiences, both give a DFS (almost BBS with 2 passes WTG...almost) and that's all I look for.
I have a SE Valet that I'm considering getting some blades for and to then use. Just 'cause I can and because I think it's neat to use things that have been around for over 100 years. I'm guessing it'll also talk to me when I use it.

I pulled out my G-Bar on Saturday - awesome, bbs even on my neck, which is typically very sensitive to ATG.

Each SE model sings it's own song.

That's lyrical. That could be the title of an album!

Too true, I love my SE's. However, I have answered the call from the dark side. I would say, "once you go to single edge, you will eventually try a straight". Without a doubt the closest shave yet...but not as comfortable as my beloved 1914...yet.

Just had the second SE shave and it's almost perfect. Just got to remember to keep the head a lot flatter and remind yourself that you're pushing the blade rather than pulling it. Your hand is almost behind the blade rather than in front of it. as long as you stick to those two things it's flawless to use. They're wicked looking machines also. I also like the idea of shaving with something that was designed and made prior to WW1. Having thick solid blades that last more than two or three shaves is a bit of a bonus too I think. I can see myself getting really stuck in to these.
