View Full Version : How could you do this, if at all ?
I have(might have) an older bakelite lamp whose shaft is bakelite/catalin.
I call it the shaft since I don't know what else to call it. It is the long tube that goes from the base on the floor to the light at the top.
It is about 3 feet long and around 3.5 inches in diameter, with a hole down the length for the cord.
I was thinking I might be able to use the shaft for a brush handle, if I could figure out a way to plug the hole in the bottom.
Do you have any ideas for how, and with what, to plug the bottom hole so that it looks reasonably attractive ?
thanks

I have plugged several Sambar Stag antler brush handles with a plug made from Black Buffalo horn. But, I could imagine you could use any material for this purpose. Just turn a plug to the correct size and glue it in. There are many resins, acrylics or even stabilized woods out there one can use.
Plug it with a magnet! Then you can hang it under your medicine cabinet.

I would wonder about expansion of two different materials as Bakelite is brittle

Plug it with acrylic or some other synthetic material and you wont have to worry about expansion.

I had a small crack in the bottom of a bakelite brush handle that I patched with a nickel. Anything that you like the look of will do.

I guess that's what you call a plug nickel. :lol: Beautiful!

here is a source for resins that would work with the bakelite and look natural as well;
